My laptop has about 90 million viruses and trojan horses on it, and I'm pretty sure it's making it so that Giant Bomb is damn near impossible to use. I can't edit wikis, posting in the forums is incredibly buggy, among other things. Is there any free program out there that will remove this shit from my computer?

Trendmicro housecall is a good free online scanner. For realtime protection I like AVG antivirus free edition, it's been solid for me for years.

AVG isn't going to save you even after reinstalling Windows.  All you can do is keep Windows updated, use a hardware SPI Firewall (a router), use Firefox with the NoScript addon, and be smart about what you download.  Using those principles I've remained malware free for years, and I don't even use antivirus software.

In order to reinstall windows wouldn't he have to buy it from a store if he doesn't have a copy of it already?

  • The majority of times, the reason you're computer is being slow is not down to a 'virus'.
  • Typically, malware is the biggest culprits for computer/network slowdowns - use Spybot and manually remove anything it can't manage to.
  • If you're tech savvy, HijackThis is the most useful tool you'll ever use for sorting out spyware problems.
  • Sometimes a reformat is the quickest option - be careful to back up only essential information, format your drive, scan the data for viruses and then reinstall Windows. Don't bother just reinstalling Windows over the top of an existing mess.
  • I don't use a virus scanner, but that's no reason not to be cautious - use one; AVG and Avast are free and do the job just fine.
  • Running additional scans with online scanners such as HouseCall and ActiveScan is never a bad idea.
  • As MB says, keep your OS and your browser patched. NoScript won't do help much though - the chances of JavaScript exploit damaging your computer are extremely low - it's nice to use if you're particularly paranoid about XRSS/CRS though.
  • You'll probably find that browsers that use a sandbox architecture like Chrome and IE8 will be the most secure for the moment but both Firefox and Opera are very good with patching problems quickly.
  • Don't run anything stupid. If you don't know what an executable does; don't run it, test it in a VM or run it through something like Jotti or VirusTotal.
  • Read the installation wizard when you install things, untick the 'Install Crappy Toolbar!' boxes; if in doubt - check the program on a database like SpywareGuide.

Reinstall Windows.  After that, stop trying to surf porn sites.  Just go get laid instead.

My computer was recently infected with a Trojan.DNS changer virus that was really god damn annoying.
Anytime i googled something and tried to click on a page it would redirect me some where totally different. Also it messed with my X box live connection.
And on top of that it was a smart virus that refused to let me access the AVG website to update my protection.
Luckily i found a way around it with the help of a Brilliant computer savvy guy. :)
We downloaded the newest version of AVG onto his palm pilot and then saved it to an SD card the put it on the computer.
AVG with the help of MBAM-(Malwarebytes) completely cleaned up that virus fast.

People who get laid still watch porn,

BUT... if your town has a Motel 8... try going there at 2:15AM. Bring a condom and a credit card.  (just kidding)

Don't know about any good free ones for viruses, but for adware and spyware, Ad-Aware is definitely my favorite. I remember when I first downloaded it, it found over 600 spyware and adware on our porn-free computer. We eventually bought PC Tools Spyware Doctor/Antivirus and it only found about 5 minor spyware threats that Ad-Aware couldn't find. Definitely a great free spyware program.

I have found that Avast is the best antivirus program.

Everyone I know that uses AVG ended up getting a virus so I don't really trust it that much. Beats the hell out of Norton though...
