I love seeing films in theaters but man it can become so noisy at times that i feel like plugging my ears with my fingers. Some films just are too horrid in that aspect to be watched at a theater.
I haven't been to a theater in years. The primary reasons being the noisy people you mentioned, price, and the quality of recent Hollywood films.

I was actually talking about the volume of films these days, they seem to have increased a lot and are nearly intolerable.
But yeah the noise people make is annoying too, ugh i hate the sound of texts being received. :<
Maybe it is just the few places I have lived, but I have never been to a theater where people make noise during movies. No cell phones, cheering, talking at the screen, just silence.
Use small earplugs when you go. Some of my friends do this, works well.
The only problems I have are when I see a movie targeted at the brodude audience and they are obnoxious brodudes throughout, as expected, and when the movie I am seeing is quiet and I can hear the movie that is playing adjacent to the screen I am sitting at. That shit is the worst.
i find the sound mixing of films (or perhaps how the mix is conveyed in a certain theater's setting) to be fairly annoying. i haven't been to a film in a while ( i think Inception was my last), but one of the reasons that i stopped was because the action-y stuff was somewhat overwhelming when compared to the more subtle moments. i don't know if this is a personal thing (i despise loudness, in general) or specific to certain theaters, or more widespread, but it certainly has been a major reason that i have stopped going to see movies.
The noise I don't hate, unless it's a tense moment or they're being obnoxiously loud, popcorn chewing and slurping is part of the experience.
But those motherfuckers who are texting and giggling thru-out the movie with their phones brightness settings maxed out can suck a huge dick.
EDIT: If you were talking about the movie volume, in which case I have no issue, and I would recommend sitting close to the back of the theater, but I do indeed like having loud sound to go with my huge screen.
My previous comment still stands.
Once, I went to see The Phantom Menace 3D on opening day(EAT ME), and some stupid parent decided to bring their underdevoloped baby/toddler to the movie, who of course, started crying. It didn't last long, but man when a baby cries in a theater, dark thoughts come to mind.
EDIT: In terms of the audio of the movie, it can get overwhelming at times, but that's part of the experience right? Plus, on average I probably go to the theater twice a year, so it doesn't bother me at all.
Going to the movies is rarely a good experience. I just don't bother anymore.
I believe that with the introduction of Blu-Ray the cinema is a far less compelling experience, films look sharper on my (obviously) smaller television but I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I have a good sized TV which will be replaced with an even better one soon and a great surround sound system. I don't need to risk having my experience ruined by assholes at a cinema, this isn't the late 90s where I only had a 15" CRT and stereo sound. It's much cozier to be in with the gf on a sofa. I am open to going to see musicals and plays because I feel they attract more mature people.
I know your not talking about people being loud in the theatre, but I think people are too uptight about people talking. Babies and cellphones can be annoying but I kind of like movies when they are somewhat social experiences. I like it when people freaked out during Paranormal activity 2, or when people cooed to the Hunger Games romance parts. It makes the movie more interesting when I feel like other people are watching it with me.
The theaters around here are nice, but yeah, the volume is horribly loud. The Avatar re-release was physically painful at times. Until that stops, I'm done with action-heavy films at theaters. I've already probably taken ten years off of my hearing through music, no need to accelerate the process further with movies.

I live in a pretty nice area right now and people are well behaved at the movies. I went to college in kind of a crappy neighborhood and even adults were obnoxious.
Anyway, to answer your question, yes. Usually the feature isn't too bad with the exception of a few scenes. Lately I've noticed that the trailers and commercials seem to be really bad. I actually put my noise isolating earbuds in during some action movie trailer when I was at the movies a couple of weeks ago.
The theater I usually go to is normally really quiet and nobody is obnoxious. But the last movie I saw was in a shitty area and half the theater was talking loudly as if there was no movie playing.
edit: oops. Yeah, I actually like my movies to be really loud. The biggest screens at my local theater have super loud audio, it made the plane crash scene in The Grey so much more intense.
I haven't noticed because it's been 8 years since I was last at a theatre. The theatres here suck and American movies are worse.
There's been a few movies I've been to where the sound levels were uncomfortably loud, but I generally don't have a problem.
People are the bigger issue, I wish cinema's would crack down on noisy people a lot harder. If you want to sit and talk to your friend, go somewhere else. Zero tolerance.
I don't go very often, but when I do I always hate how loud they are.
