Are there any mods online at three o'clock in the morning Pacific Time? I'm just curious. I noticed that MB, Chaser, and Sparky are all offline.

#2 Posted by Ravenlight (8040 posts) -

They might not be online but they're always watching. Especially . He watches you sleep.

I'm nocturnal and at around 5 am I start to notice a giant rise in spam. I asked for a karma reset just two days ago and already need another. I think that must be a time when they're all at work or sleeping. There should be a captcha at account creation or something.

Judging from the sudden influx of spam threads, there probably should be.

#5 Posted by CaLe (3910 posts) -

It's getting quite ridiculous. I really hope the new site design does something to cut this shit out. Stop brand new accounts from making threads or something..

#6 Posted by kerse (2100 posts) -

Yeah the spam is pretty bad right now, there's only like 3 real threads on the first page now.

#7 Posted by Baillie (4036 posts) -

I can't even flag anything, it's fucking annoying.

Great job there, Dave Snider, must be really hard to filter them out, you know, with them all being about the same topic and all. Ha ! Ha !

#9 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) -

@CaLe: I still don't understand how this is such a big issue. Other communities implement captchas and email verification before posting and other things so spam never ends up on the forum, but here, spam accounts keep popping up and making threads. I don't see where the loophole is. Or is it just an outdated sign up/verification process?

Yeah when it comes to spam like this, the flagging system is real shitty. Flag 2 posts or something and you can't flag anymore.

The bots are informative and helpful

Your 3am is someone else's 8pm.

Are any of the mods English? Maybe I should apply...

The flagging system has ALWAYS been pretty dumb. Nice in theory, broken in reality.

Because it all start at what, 3 AM? Day after Christmas? It's not like our moderators don't have lives or anything.

It gets bad early in the morning.

PSA: Instead of complaining impotently that your flags don't work, contact the nice/creepy/delicious mod team via the PM Mods link here. Ask them to reset your flags and spam joyously link them with pictures of kittens and what you had for lunch.

Dave said there is a captcha for signing up new accounts but the workaround is quite simple as you just need a person to fill that shit out and then let the spam bot do it's thing.

I've gave up even bothering, have you seen how the flag system works? You can only flag 5 times a day, and that's if you haven't flagged for days. You get to be able to flag once more the next day, and so on. What confuses me is if you flag something, and the flagging thing gets deleted or moderated, you don't receive your flag back. Don't get that part at all.

@Baillie: How the system used to work (and this was on Tested, and also not entirely sure it worked all the time) was that when the mod clicked the 'moderator' button in the mod panel, the user had Karma leveraged against them, and the user flagging had his refunded.

Because mods have better things to do than constantly sit around and refresh the forum index watching for spam that ever-so-slightly inconveniences your usage of an otherwise free service.

#34 Posted by NiKva (128 posts) -

Planning on posting porn?

#35 Posted by Little_Socrates (5675 posts) -

The flagging system made a lot of sense when we were too small to be assaulted by spammers like this. But it's getting PRETTY crazy. That would be something I'd like to see altered on the new site.

#36 Posted by Baillie (4036 posts) -

@MAGZine: Yes, it's almost right, but the user doesn't get refunded. Which is the part that really breaks it. I'm sure there's a 10 point scale, 5 of which we can mount up ourselves by flagging other posts. Then if we get 5 flags against our posts that's you locked from posting I think? I can't remember exactly, but the fact that you don't get refunded for a successful flagging is stupid.

Maybe if you guys just watched some soccer games online at 3am, we wouldn't have this problem.

I agree with what Sunny's saying here. However, I don't think this spam would be as much of a problem if we had more mods (we only have 15 mods on a website with 161,235 users (a lot of users are not active or have been banned, but still), and that doesn't seem like enough to me).

Everything needs to be CAPTCHA. Sign Up? CAPTCHA. View Forums? CAPTCHA. View Thread? CAPTCHA. Create Thread? CAPTCHA with multiple words with the image reversed and have to solve a random Sudoku puzzle.

I just solved the spam problem. You can thank me with some coupons to a titty bar. Thanks.

@Baillie: 5 karma - no more flagging, 10 karma - no more posting AFAIR. Tested doesn't use the karma system anymore.

#41 Posted by Demoskinos (14562 posts) -
@TyCobb Except there IS a captcha system in place for new sign up accounts. These bots are beating the captcha.

That's still the case.

I restored your flags. Doing all that I can since I was snowed in today.

@buft And pretty soon its going to be like Binary Domain where you can't tell the bots from the humans!
#47 Posted by Tobiass (150 posts) -

I once made a thread on a different account about having a naked girl on my bed and what I should do ....I was banned, it was 3am

#48 Posted by Sweep (8817 posts) -

We have the mod team spread out across the US and Britain, so there will usually be someone online regardless of time zones. The problem at the moment is that spammers (actual people, not spambots) are creating the accounts and then running their scripts afterwards - which renders captcha mostly useless. As a result the only real thing we can do is sit around and delete the threads/spam accounts as and when they appear.

This is further complicated by the fact that, hey, it's christmas - while we love moderating this site we also have real life obligations like spending time with our families. We do a pretty good job of keeping the spammers at bay most of the time, and it's unfortunate that this most recent attack has come when many of us are unavailable. Nobody needs to panic, but at the moment it might take us longer to assemble than would otherwise be the case.

Two things: instead of flagging the threads it might be easier to just fire out a pm to all the mods (you can do this from the forum FAQ) and we will deal with them all at once.

Secondly we just want to reassure everyone that the staff are very aware of this problem and are working on a solution that will hopefully be deployed when the redesign goes live.

Hold tight, folks. Top Men are on the case.

Can you only flag a set amount of times before not being able to flag for a while?
