So for a long time there were certain sounds that I would find relaxing. These were sounds like people chewing gum or smacking. Since these are not usually pleasant sounds I decided I was just weird and I should keep it to myself. A few months ago though, I stumbled on something called ASMR or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. It turns out that some people will find certain sounds calming such as crinkling paper, gum chewing, scribbling, etc. Certain individuals will even get a tingling sensation in their head. (I only have gotten this feeling once. It feels great) Mostly is just use these video to help me get to sleep.

Do you find any certain sounds relaxing? Is this creepy? Is this stupid?

It's not inherently creepy or stupid, but I don't experience it.

It could get creepy if you choose a person as your "favorite source" or something, though.

What happens if I experienced an erection?

#4 Posted by Ramone (2976 posts) -

I'm deeply disturbed that this actually works.

#5 Posted by bushpusherr (852 posts) -

I find I have the opposite reaction. My roommate simply cannot manage to chew with his lips together, constantly smacks, and drives me fucking crazy.

sucks to your ASMR

If you don't know what happens when you get an erection you should probably call a doctor and have it looked at.
Usually there are big changes

I just find this gross.

I hate when people chew gum or pop bubblegum loudly, I stare at the them until they get the point.

I discovered the existence of ASMR a few days ago actually. And yes I find it incredibly creepy, especially when roleplay and binaural mics are involved.

This is fucking weird.

#12 Posted by Rainbowkisses (467 posts) -

@SlashDance: I will agree that roleplay videos are incredibly creepy.

#13 Posted by SirOptimusPrime (2030 posts) -

I listen to these all the time to go to sleep. Mainly whispering and paper sounds seem to get me, but lip smacking can do it too. VeniVidiVulpes, when she does videos, is great. It's the same thing as people listening to relaxing sounds/nature to fall asleep, except that it's primarily amateurs doing it. It's not creepy, eccentric maybe but not creepy.

@bushpusherr: Well this is a controlled environment where you're looking for those sounds, not a dinner table where people need to learn some goddamn manners. There's a difference, at least to me.

I love this thread simply because it led me to this:

Is there a name for the opposite where sounds like that throw you into a homicidal rage? Because I feel like I'm one good squeaky chair or loud chewer away from a life spent in prison.

It worked for me too! I actually got the tingling sensation as well. Awesome.

i work and in a warehouse, and periodically the forklifts have to be checked by a mechanic, the sound of the mechanic tinkering around with the forklifts always give me this kind of response, a certain tone of voice does it to me too.

I'm sure there are other things but those are the main ones that come to mind

#19 Edited by Dethfish (3697 posts) -

Sometimes I have a hard time getting to sleep at night, so I've been using videos like this for a while now to help put me to sleep. That probably makes me weird, I guess.

#20 Posted by NinjaBerd (221 posts) -

Sure, might be a little weird, but who wants to be normal?

#21 Posted by JoeyRavn (4983 posts) -

It's not creepy, at all. These videos make sounds that stimulate certain areas of pleasure in your brain, hence the tingling sensation. I usually put them in the background when I'm studying or writing up something, just to have some background noise that doesn't distract me from the work at hand.

#22 Posted by Panchos (15 posts) -

Works for me.

This...is wild. Just when I thought I was invincible, I discover this weakness. Thank you, TC.

#24 Posted by OmegaChosen (647 posts) -

It gets creepy when you realize it was first called "Attention Induced Head Orgasm".

Also, I don't feel it. I get a weird feeling but I think that's because I'm listening to someone chew gum waiting for headgasms instead of this sensory thing.

#25 Posted by SlashDance (1843 posts) -

I've been clicking around and found this. That's one outstanding beard.

@Toxeia: I really can't decide which part of that screencap is the best.

Oh... that's what this is. Yeah, I often feel that particular tingling and I felt it multiple times in that video you posted, even though I feel like I should think that the chewing sound is disgusting.

...Feels good, though.

Can't feel it when I'm too busy being freaked out, though, like in that spa roleplay video.

#28 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (4495 posts) -

I watch "different" internet videos to help me sleep.

I wouldn't say this is sexual in nature. This is an actual sensation that some seem to feel and some don't, but it isn't about sexual arousal.

#31 Posted by YI_Orange (1172 posts) -

To actually add to this thread: I'm the exact opposite. I'm convinced I have misophonia which means I fucking hate all of you.

That was the weirdest feeling ever. I feel like my mind was manipulated, and even though it was calming, I didn't like it one bit.

It's a little creepy until you find a trigger that works for you, then it's super-relaxy time.

#35 Posted by TooWalrus (13257 posts) -
@Ravenlight: Yeah, I've yet find something. Instead, I'm sitting here watching this virtual spa thing, and my only reaction is to involuntarily raise one eyebrow in disapproval.
#36 Edited by myketuna (1757 posts) -

@Rainbowkisses: I don't think it's creepy because I am a fellow ASMR, er, "experiencer". I am also one of the those who get the tingly head thing. It is great.

And I think it's only "creepy" because there seems to be a lot of fairly attractive women doing videos on it compared to men (I get it from either) and that automatically becomes a "is this porn? this looks like porn" thing. But I don't get "turned on" by it. Quite the opposite. During those insomnious nights, it helps a lot to calm me down or straight put me to sleep.

For those that don't know/have the feeling, the closest thing to ASMR that I can think of is when someone scratches/massages your head/hair. If you don't get tingly and relaxed off of that, then I don't know how else to describe it.

#37 Posted by Linkster7 (1045 posts) -

I get a tingly feeling like someone is holding a knife to my temple.

I don't think this is for me.

#38 Posted by ajamafalous (12161 posts) -

I haven't watched any of these videos yet, but I have a ~30 minute rain/thunderstorm .mp3 that I often loop in the background because it's super soothing. Sometimes I also use it to drown out noise because, again, super soothing.

Is that the same thing? I don't recall any tingly feeling.

#39 Posted by Toxin066 (3329 posts) -

I find that red head to be incredibly relaxing.

...that actually just described it perfectly for me, thanks!

My wife does this for me a lot in the shower or when we are just watching TV, and it's an amazing feeling.

Curious to try these videos and see if they have an effect

Hmm... I'm conflicted here. I feel the tingling and I do find it relaxing but whispering in my ear is something gfs have always done during moments of intimacy, so its dangerously close to becoming more sexual than relaxing. It almost makes me feel guilty as I don't think these ladies intended for it to be sexual.

I just watched the vids and I got nothing except the vaguely dirty feeling to be honest haha :(

Shame, would have been an interesting experience and Gods know I am always looking for something that might help with my insomnia.

Well if you did take it that way I don't see the difference between that and any other time you've fancied someone without their knowledge. It really isn't morally questionable as long as you can just keep that to yourself most of the time.

@Toxeia: Some of those videos are a bit creepy but god damn that girl is too adorable. The creeper factor is a little off putting though, she comes across more like a super cute little sister.

Yeah, I stumbled into that whole ASMR thing a couple of months back. It's super creepy and super hot. Just the way I like it.

The bomb squad should do a premium live stream feature in the style of...

RUB MY MAGIC SANTA, VINNY.
