Nickelodeon has just greenlit a new animated series from Avatar: the Last Airbender creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. According to the network's president, Brown Johnson, the series-- currently titled The Legend of Korra-- will be expanding the mythology of the Avatar franchise, setting it roughly 70 years after the original show's events with a whole new cast of characters.

"Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," Johnson said. "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."

The Legend of Korra

The Legend of Korra follows the adventures of a "passionate, rebellious and fearless" teenager from the Southern Water Tribe, a girl named Korra. Having already mastered three of the four elements (Earth, Water, and Fire), she seeks to master the final element of Air. Her travels eventually lead her to the metropolis of Republic City, an epicenter for the modern Avatar world. Although a thriving society of benders and non-benders alike, Republic City is also ridden with crime, including an anti-bending rebellion that is gaining momentum. Under the guidance of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training as she confronts the dangers ahead of her.

The Legend of Korra will be produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios and is expected to begin airing sometime in 2011.

Glad to see Nickelodeon finally announced a follow up to the original Avatar: The Last Airbender, although it doesn't look like we are going to find out whether or not Zuko found his mother or what happened inside the Fire Nation. Like were there two or more opposing factions, one for rebuilding its status among the other Nations and another against it. Then again all this stuff can be answered in this new series I just would of like it if they didn't have to jump 70 years to answer these questions.

Republic City? That's a crappy name. Still, all of this begs the question, "Why aren't there any decent Avatar games out yet?" The whole premise is just begging for a kickass game.

hell fucking yeah, best news I've heard today

I thought you were talking about the movie and I honestly got sad for a minute there. :P

Oh that Avatar. Well that could be something. Wonder if they're sticking with the art style or up/downgrading.

@Video_Game_King: Good question. The world of Avatar is rich with lore and an epic land just begging to be explored.

@Dr_VonBoogie:

I was thinking more along the lines of an RPG, since there's so much room for so many classes.

@Video_Game_King: Hey man, don't diss Republic City until you've actually visited it for yourself. You wouldn't know it at first glance, but the place has fantastic casinos. We're talking even better than Vegas and Atlantic City combined and then upped by some unknown exponential factor. That's how great of a place Republic City is. It's both a republic and a city, all rolled up into one! What isn't there to like?

@Pepsiman:

For one, it sounds like some Roman dudes got lazy when naming a place. It makes Townsville sound creative by comparison. Second, it's full of anti-bending assholes. That may not sound like much, but they consider my powers to be a new form of bending, meaning I get a lot of crap from them. Fuck you guys, it isn't bending. This is bending: *transforms into Aang, does bendy stuff, realizes lack of video games starring Korra, instead transforms into Bender, does bendy stuff* That's why they can bite my shiny, metal ass.

@Video_Game_King:  An Avatar RPG would be awesome, if you get the right people to develop it that is.

Can't wait!

#14 Posted by iam3green (14390 posts) -

alright, i kind of want to hear more of the show. i haven't seen all of the episodes of the show. i think they should have continued a story for ang instead of making a new story of the past of the girl.

#15 Posted by Video_Game_King (35841 posts) -
@iam3green:

What would it be about? They kinda wrapped things up at the end. Zuko, on the other hand...

Awesome. Loved the original series. Let's hope this can be even better.

i don't know ang becoming powerful. i didn't watch a lot of it only a couple of episodes.

@iam3green:  Well if you wanna catch yourself up on the series you can watch all three seasons in its completion here. You're gonna have to install a browser app if you wanna watch them, and I believe it only works on Firefox and use Adbloker if you go there. Also that's a great site if you want old and new television shows by the way, movies as well (old and new). Check it out and explore the site. It's all free by the way.

#20 Posted by GlenTennis (3144 posts) -

Man I can't wait for it to be made into a movie...

#21 Posted by Dany (7887 posts) -

I am excited for this! Very glad that the structure of the story is going to be different and that the avatar already knows 3/4 elements.

Yeah, considering the jump is 70 years, it does leave a lot to wonder how much they will be willing to answer or wrap up.

I rewatched the series a while ago and it is stil one of the greats

Everyone dies sometime, kiddo. Seriously though, that thought is kinda depressing but its been a few years right? I hope they mention plainly what happened to who and when and where they are now

And dead at an incredibly young age to considering how long people can live in the avatar world.
#25 Posted by Dr_VonBoogie (348 posts) -
@The_Laughing_Man: Aang's spirit is still with them though.

But still...who did Aang knock up
#28 Posted by Nexas (625 posts) -

I'm curious how things are going to work with Korra already knowing three of the four elements. Sure having a retread of the whole "learn all the elements" story would be kinda lame, but a fully realized Avatar is all but invincible. How are they going to come up with a valid threat for someone who is 3/4 the way there?

#29 Posted by Landon (4127 posts) -
@Dr_VonBoogie:  Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure at a comic-con immediatly after Avatar ended they said that Zuko did find his mother.

But yeah, I can't freaking wait. But 2011 seems way to far away.

Was the kiss between Aang and Katara as the final shot in the series not a big enough hint for you?
#33 Posted by EvilTwin (3324 posts) -

I'm totally stoked for this.  I do hope someone from the original series is still alive to make a cameo, though.  Preferably Sokka.

I know, I was kidding! Hope the show is great
#35 Posted by Tactical_Kill (1695 posts) -

Well if she know 3/4 of the elements I'm guessing shes in her 20s. So that means he would have died about 50 years after the story ended. Aang was 12ish when the series ended so he would have pry been in his 60s when he died. So that means there is still a big chance that the other characters are still alive. Which means Zuko's story could also be mentioned in this series.

I'm probably way over thinking this.

#36 Edited by Dany (7887 posts) -
@Tactical_Kill: Wait, did not think about that, so aang was murdered
#37 Posted by Animasta (14637 posts) -

well Aang will obviously be there, if you guys forgot all about how Aang met with Avatar Roku... At least we'll get to see old Aang :D

#38 Posted by Dr_VonBoogie (348 posts) -
@EvilTwin: If I had to make a guess I would say Aang (in spirit form that is), Toph maybe Katara, Azula and Zuko.
#39 Posted by Dany (7887 posts) -

Obviously this tv show should be treated as its own thing and should not be referential to the last airbender but at least an indication as to what happened would be great

#40 Posted by I_love_Eva_Braun (481 posts) -

For anyone who want to know,it's been confirmed that the new show will have only 12 episodes ,it's actually a miniseries

Avatar Cycle= he ded

New Avatar doesn't reincarnate until the old one dies.

Cool. I just recently started getting into the Avatar show though so it's a little wierd to be seeing a different Avatar.

#44 Posted by TurboMan (7344 posts) -

I thought this was James Cameron's avatar, not the other one....

...both are terrible movies.

"This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."

Honestly, this is basically all I needed to hear. I don't think I've ever seen a show starring a brash girl with an in-your-face attitude be anything except garbage. Leela from Futurama may be an exception, but it was made very clear that, like everything else in the show, her hot-headedness was not meant to be taken seriously, though I can't imagine this show doing anything but a totally straightforward 'grrl power' character straight out of the late 90's.

Which is a bummer, since the first series was actually really good.

People make continuity concessions all the time to account for popular characters.
#48 Edited by Mr_Faraday (241 posts) -

If shes got 3 of of the 4 bending abilities then that means shes already spoken to Aang several times. Remember Aang had to talk to the previous avatar Roku so that means she has too talk to Aang. So expect to see an older Spirit Aang.

We may also see referance to a fire lord Zuko and it would be cool to see an old Toph.

That's not a continuity concession though, the entire series is based on that concept of the Avatar Cycle. Can't just yank the premise from underneath a series, especially a series with such a high standard of writing.
