Saw 1 is a great movie because it takes about 80 minutes before the film starts to blow up in your face. and in those 80 minutes it takes the time to make you like both the detective and the doctor. then when the last 20 minutes hit it hits with non-stop action. i think it is quite possibly the best horror/slasher film of the last decade.
@Black_Rose: I've got to disagree with you on Battle Royale, the film lost the connection to each of the characters so by the half way line you could already tell how the film would end. The manga on the other hand is bloody great at making you feel for a character before they bite it, but it fall into the trap of "if someone gets a back-story they are going to bite it soon".

There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and The Departed while containing some great performances are quite forgettable as films IMO.
