It's hard to say. All the recent ones have been less than satisfactory, and history obscures the old ones. I do like Washington though. He set many wise precedents that are still followed today .

I really want to like Jefferson because I love his writings, but he did much to increase the power of the president while in office.

Uhh I guess none of you have ever read Truman by David McCullough? Anyway, my top three are in no particular order:

1. Washington
2. Truman
3. Lincoln

Truman is my personal favorite just because he didn't necessarily want to be President but was thrust into it. How he handled the end of WW2 was simply amazing IMHO. He gets so much grief for using the bomb and yet by using it he stopped possibly a million more from having to die, both Japanese and American. To those who say he wanted to use the bomb just for the sake of it, history tells us that there was at least one more nuke available and while many in his cabinet preferred to use it, Truman refused because he understood that the point was to end the war and not to kill just to kill.
