ANOTHER CHALLENGER APPROACHES!

What?

I haven't really done a side thing coding wise in a while and I got it stuck in my head at some point that there hasn't been a Bomberman game out in a long while. Cloning games seems to be all the rage right now so I figured, why not throw one together? So I present to you, the beginnings of a super silly, probably unbalanced Bomberman game that I'll dub Bomberduder =D

What?

Yea. What again. I'm bringing my laptop and some controllers to PAX East and so if I get this thing together by then on off time (mostly weekends I suppose) it might be some stupid fun to play with other duders. I'll also put it online somewhere for anyone interested to download but since I don't plan on adding any internet play, your enjoyment will be strictly based on whether or not you can get some people together to play it.

Plans?

I'd like to throw in a bunch of random people and possibly give them stupid ass abilities that may break any semblance of balanced play. These abilities would have to be something that have limited use. Maybe it can be dependent on getting a certain number of kills or just a time based thing, haven't thought it through yet. An example of the type of game breaking things I plan on are things such as John Drake getting into a plane and being able to fly around the map or Dave Lang creating a zone around himself in which other player's controls get borked. Maybe Scoops casts fear which makes players run away from him? Hell, sky's the limit.

Duder, can I help?

Yes. Yes you can. I'll take anything you wanna give me including tiles, ideas, sprites, sounds, music. Whatever you got, I'll take it and try to find a place to cram it into this thing.

The format for the land based tiles are 64x64 pixels.

The characters will end up being 64 x 95.

The item icons are 48x48.

Very much looking for help in finding sound bytes of any and all people related to Giant Bomb saying stupid shit for when they either place bombs or get hit... or maybe pick up items. Who cares, just get me sound bytes =D

As for the characters themselves, I plan on taking the cheapest easiest route possible. Which is pretty much going to end up being cut outs of their actual heads. I may animate a body of some sort to plaster the heads on but also, maybe not. *shrug*

Yea duders, throw shit at me and we'll see what sticks =D

I'll update in here as I throw more stuff together. In the meanwhile, if you're bored you can still check out MegaMan X GiantBomb or Picross.

I prefer .png if there are any transparencies. Currently changed the flame up icon to the tested flame logo and the kick item into Kick from DiveKick.

I tried putting it in but it's not the right size for item pickups and it also doesn't appear to have transparencies =P How about trying a cutout of the actual bomb icon on the logo up top left and resizing that sucker?

Here's a super low quality update on progress.

Added animation to characters.

Added variable animation speed that depends on the speed the character is being moved so that things look right when moving faster/slower.

Changed the way bombs are generated in the game so that there is a pool of bombs pulled from rather than a new one created every time one is planted.

Changed the way individual tiles work so that they can detect themselves what is on them (item, bomb, character). This will allow me to allow the flames that exist after the bomb has already gone off to damage characters/bombs etc.

Gonna prob work on kicking and maybe tossing bombs next. Will also need to find some proper pictures of people to plaster onto character bodies.

If someone wanted to give you a character would you want the head and body separate or just as one thing? Also for sound bytes just an mp3? Or the video it was from

Ideally I'd want the sound bytes as a pre-ripped MP3 or WAV.

As for the characters, I'm open to whatever. For just the head, I'd need a right facing profile, facing down and facing away. This thing is gonna be janky so as long as they're somewhat similar in lighting and reasonably similar in size, I think it'll be fine. Just toss me whatever and I'll use what I can and comment on why I can't use other sections.

Having seen your abilities I'd love to see this as an actual product. I'll pay upwards of $10. I assume the "Bomberman" concept is vague enough that you wouldn't get into trouble?

I'll at least get this thing playable if not fully featured and cast. Even thought the bomberman concept is something that could prolly be copied without too many problems, I doubt what I'm making would fly considering I'm going to be putting real people into it and whatever other licensed stuff people find for me to throw in. Thanks tho =]

After seeing Dave on the GDC show, figured it's the type of joke that would fit in with this.

Doh, just had time to read the entire post. It's a bad habit of mine to jump straight to media when time is limited.

Really like the idea of having all of these well known GB members and friends as playable characters, and having them all have unique aspects in the game.

Alright, made some changes so that I can just slap on pictures of heads. This ought to make it super easy to fill out the roster using just a front, profile and back of head pic.

Also, I can have more than one per side which the game will randomly pluck from =P

That's a Jet Set Radio skate, although now I'm thinking that a bottle of Buckfast might be more apt.

What a fun idea! Here are some graphics for how I was thinking of the item pick-ups could look:

Sorry about the quality, these were kind of a rush job. Anyway, I came up with the idea of having the icon float in place, making it a bit more enticing to grab (even the subtlest of movements is better than no movement at all, I say). Then I thought about times I play Bomberman with others and always someone (including myself) having to ask what a pick-up does. Not wanting to get rid of the symbol representation, I figured giving each item a back design saying clearly what the pick-up gives you could be useful, to which I made the icon spin to show you just that. I then tried to combine the two because why not.

I also came up with a few other ideas that I didn't have time to mock-up such as tiny sparkles coming off of the icon, the icon jumping up and down, giving the face of the icon a sheen, and a few other really minor ones. If you think any of this is cool, Fobwashed, let me know and I could try to crank out the other power-ups in the style(s) you prefer.

In terms of other ideas, I think it would be cool if the screen would jolt and shake a bit every time a bomb explodes and even more so when a chain reaction happens. I believe general motion and movement to just about anything is able to add a lot (if my icons didn't tell you that already). The motion may become a bit distracting (and not possible maybe? I don't really know anything about coding), but if this game is going to be over-the-top, this feels like the right touch to give it that even more over-the-topness.

I also intend to try my hand at ripping some sound clips of the duders as well as make a body for them. Hopefully I can get back to you with something soon.

In any case, awesome work so far, Fobwashed! Can't wait for the finished product.

The icon stuff sounds fairly reasonable. The best way to streamline the idea of animation and sheen as well as unifying them with a consistant back design would be to have an image of a blank back. I could then in-game, draw the back, then draw the item design on top of the back then finally draw the animated transparent sheen on the front of both. Go ahead and shoot me a back design if you wanna take a better crack at it.

What I need right now

are sound bytes. Sounds of anyone and everyone saying shit they might say when getting damaged or taunting or whatever.

I've added super bars that charge up 2 levels.

@bribo Any chance I could get those item icons without the shadows? I put in some item float and having a shadow exist on the icon itself makes it look like it's moving up and down in the level instead of up and down in the air.

Currently I'm working at 1050x900 resolution. This is pretty much what I'll be sticking with I think.

The black squares and the grey squares are just placeholders. Grey being breakable tiles and black being unbreakable. The tiles themselves are 64x64. If you want to take a shot at making some tiles, that'd be hottness too. I can have as many different types of tiles as people are willing to make. I think ideally I'd like a texture for the entire floor area with the breakable and unbreakable tiles placed on top of it. Pretty much I can work around whatever you give me tho I'm sure. The blue area is currently just straight up blank. If you wanna take a crack at that area that'd be cool as well. On this play screen, I think all I've really got to add information wise are some pips for how many rounds have been won per player. If you've got any thoughts on any other part, shoot em over =]

Here's a look at an implemented "power"

Klepek's lvl 1 is an invisible bomb and his lvl 2 is an AOE fear.

Super hard to test anything really w/only the one player (me).

The specific tile sizes for stuff are listed in the OP, the window size of the game itself I'm currently using is a strange 1050x900. I'll take whatever I can get and put in anything that makes sense! Doesn't mean what you get me has to make sense, just like, if it can work in the game =P

I'd love if this turned into some Frog Fractions / #IDARB nonsense along the way.

Combined the select to gameplay. Added some temp music.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to finally make a Giantbomb themed Bomberman clone. Making it for PAX is ingenious. Bomberman is nothing without real local people to play it with. I tried my hand at making one a long time ago, but nothing came of it. :( Best of luck with it!

I'm catching up, @fobwashed. Just put out a test build with bomb kicking and some sound/music. The gameplay gap narrows!

I have been working on some characters and ideas of my own lately, and just saw this post. You think you can use something like this ?
I only have what you see in the image as of now, but i guess i could try to make additions if you want any art.
