Bored of music, need suggestions!

Hey all,

Firstly I would like to say that the "Favourite Albums of the Year" thread has introduced me to a ton of awesome music that I never would have found otherwise. So thank you all for that, you are all amazing!

But sadly once again I am bored of what I listen to. Lately I've been in the mood for techno/electronic/dubstep music, but mainly the songs that have lyrics to them, like Daft Punk, Pendulum, Knife Party, Delta Heavy, Justice, and some Nero. Any suggestions of (maybe) more obscure, less mainstream music... or even more mainstream music that I just to happened to overlook, would be greatly appreciated.

Though it may be slightly poppy, BT's writing & sound design is amazing.

Have you listened to LCD Soundsystem? Fantastic electronic band. I'd recommend starting with Sound of Silver myself.

I'm actually not big into electronic stuff, but that's mainly due to a lack of education on my part, though I can't get enough of this track.

Now onto some stuff you might not have come across...

I haven't gone a day without listening to this song at least once ever since the video was uploaded three weeks ago.

Because "you see a mousetrap, I see free cheese and a fucking challenge" may be the best line in anything ever.

And this is just the finest example of new old-school rap with two of my absolute favourite rappers.

Purity Ring has been my latest musical obsession.

mayyyyybe you should listen to Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein. The production is killer and ridiculously emotive and all Techno-ish. Also, the lyrics are fucking amazing, but whatevs. I don't go more than 4 days without listening to it usually, but that's just me.

I don't know shit about techno, but I've got all of the contemporary folk and folk rock you could ask for.

As someone who primarily listens to punk, metal, and 90s alternative, I don't feel like I have much of a say in this thread. Still, may I recommend Radiohead's Kid A? And, if you're in the mood for something a little more glum, there's always Nine Inch Nails (one of my top five bands).

And this is also a really great CD, especially the songs Trojans, Null, and Access Granted. Plus Logic Bomb has the MGS alert noise (!) buried in it, I think. It's either in there or Trojans, which also has the MONSTERKILL sound sample buried in it.

and since you mentioned Knife Party, they worked on this song by Foreign Beggars. I found it while looking at their remix of a Meshuggah tune and a remix Noisia did of their song Contact. The whole album (The Uprising) is just dumb but for some reason it fascinates me.

'kid a' forever. that record is a revelation, and always worth a recommendation.

if you're still in the mood for electronica, i'd strongly recommend checking out the artist 'burial.' has a sound of his own, and following his progression over the years has been extremely rewarding. definitely one of my favorite recording artists. his album 'untrue' and the track 'archangel' are great places to start.

also, my favorite 'new-ish' kid in the game is nicolas jaar. he's very young, but he's also producing some of the most exciting electronic tunes i've heard in a long time. here's a downtempo bit of brilliance-

I'd say either Giant Steps or Mingus Ah Um are also good starting points for Coltrane and Mingus respectively. I personally love Black Saint and the Sinner Lady though, that record is wild.

Also, it may be futile, but I'd be remiss if I didn't push for some P-Funk.

Black Saints and the Sinner Lady was actually my first jazz album. Track A was what sold me on it.

Well if you are tired of what your listening to then shouldn't we try to offer you music that you're not in the mood for? Well, here's a band that doesn't really fit what you asked for but has some structure to it that might interest you based off of what you said. They are a band called The Menahan Street Band. They are kind of an old funk band mixed with some modern stylings like hip-hop and oddly some electronica music structure in how it repeats and builds upon a melody over the course of the song. BUT it is not what you asked for. BUT that isn't what we should give you right? Here's a few songs;

Here's some electronica/house stuff I've been listening too as well. This is more like what you asked for except that there isn't any vocals. Well, one of them has some vocals but it's only at the bridge.

I'd recommend most anything from DFA Records if you're looking for more lyrical electronic music.

LCD Soundsystem (already recommended quite a bit), The Rapture, Benoit & Sergio, Holy Ghost, Hercules and Love Affair, and Hot Chip seem to fit your criteria.

Also, listen to that guy who told you to listen to Kid A. Do it.

And a little more periodically from the same year Hot Chip's The Warning (which I was surprised to hear a track from end up on the Forza Horizon soundtrack.)

Nothing from the past few years has really grabbed like these did.

I'd have to second VNV Nation. And if you get into that, I would also say you should try out Icon of Coil.

Also, the japanese band called Schwarz Stein.

Staying on the electronic train, you might like Shapeshifter (or New Zealand Shapeshifter as they're also known as)
