Have you ever bought paper towels, came home and open them and find that they smell funky?

This just happened to me, I got 2 paper towel rolls and they smell like yogurt. I'm not sure what to do, looks like I might have to throw them out, but first and foremost I'd like to find out what's going on. (And who knows, maybe it's normal. Maybe they smell like that right after being produced, so I got a "fresh batch")

Any ideas on why they smell like that?

They are Bounty brand paper towels by the way, and this never happened before that I know of.

Maybe something spilled on them in transit. Unless the package specifically says that they're supposed to be scented, paper towels will never really have a discernible smell.

This page doesn't seem to mention anything on how Ricin smells:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricin

It has no instances of words starting with odor, scent, or smell.

I don't know how I could have made that joke more obvious.

That's whack. I'd throw them out and buy some new ones.

If it actually was Ricin you'd either be dead or in critical condition. The joke Mariachi is making is either in relation to all the cases popping up recently with politicians being mailed ricin or Breaking Bad. Perhaps both.

Thing is I noticed that Bounty smells when wet. (at least sometimes. Which should be odd that some rolls don't have it, but I guess I didn't notice, because I got over it and simply assumed the smell is always there.)

But this time is different, they are newly opened and I didn't even make them wet, and the smell is totally different. It smells more like they are rotting. I had attributed the smell-when-wet smell to more of a manufacturing smell.

apparently others have noticed and its years old phenomenon. Thing is, it seems like some are talking about the towels smelling in general, while others only notice the smell when it's wet. So it's not clear which smell is being discussed.

I must stick to Bounty though, I think other brands are shit. They tear easily, or worse, shed lint like there's no tomorrow. Funnily enough, the smell-when-wet smell was alarming to me at first but I got over it because Bounty is superior. But this new yogurt smell is a problem. How can I let any of things touch something that smells like rot.I'm certainly curious about Bounty's manufacturing process now. =0

I tried smelling them again... they don't smell as bad a day later. In fact I believe I recognize it as the same smell as always, just more profuse. So either

a) They are a fresh batch

b) They got wet during shipping/storing

maybe, the production process involves fluids, and the smell is when the towels aren't dried properly before being packed/shipped? /baseless theory

I'm afraid I will have to do just that, as much as it inconveniences me.
