I noticed that there was no topic about the new James Bond film, and I thought that there should be. Well, I saw it yesterday. And it's really good. If you like James Bond then you should see it. He goes to cool places, shoots bad guys and drives a beautiful Aston Martin. Most importantly, the plot is 100% comprehensible. Hooah.

What's all this I hear about Home Alone gags in it? Does he use a carpet of Micro Machines to thwart evil shadow companies embedded in certain government agencies? Because that would be pretty rad.

@Video_Game_King: Oh my god.

I have to tell you that this one time, a long time ago, I was at work and girl came up to me and said, By the way, my name is Whatever. I froze and said HOW DO YOU START TOPICS LIKE IN SUCH TRANSITIONAL STATES!? but felt bad about it right after and now she's my friends girlfriend of many years and I feel a tinge of awkwardness for me and also for her inability to start conversations properly.

I'm excited to see Skyfall. Quantum of Solace was the worst Bond movie ever.

I thought it was really bad and kind of bland the whole way through.

It just reminded me of The Dark Knight Rises, and the ending was a waste.

That is an astute observation: the director said that Christopher Nolan was a strong influence. Whether or not that is a good thing is, I suppose, a matter of taste.

(By the way, I don't actually know anything about movies. I just live with somebody who does and some of the information seeps in.)

Could a fellow member of the LGBT community answer me a Skyfall question: Is the Bid Bad of this movie one of those femme guy "queers are scary" type villains? I keep reading that he seems to be leaning that way, on film criticism sites, but those folks are sometimes oversensitive. Thanks!

Well the thing is The Dark Knight Rises just came out like 3 months ago so I don't think the director was intentionally biting his story template. But I just kept getting Batman flashbacks the way he fought a villain that was better than him and he was too old. Also his family manor gets blown up...

there's one scene that's kinda iffy but bond clearly doesn't take it too seriously so I thought it was all cool. I mean other than that he spends most of his time plotting and doing generic bad guy things and or being crazy.

It was a fine movie, but it's far too cliche to be superb when it comes to films in general. It's a really great Bond film though. It being cliche is its biggest problem, while there are other small ones that hinder it as well. While I didn't exactly go in expecting anything in the way of "Wow, this is going to be great!" Or "Wow, this is going to suck big time." I still came out of it a bit disappointed.

And awkwardly, the reveal at the end was somewhat reminiscent to Robin's, when Money Penny was revealed. It was almost the same camera view and set piece.

@RedCricketChase: Not really, there's just a scene in there to make the audience laugh since he mentions sex with another man, and Bond jokes about it as well.

It's like this build up for a cameo that never happened.

Yea, didnt think the movie was all that great. Really could have used some better character development. I dont think the absurd hype for the film helped either. Having all the old Bonds comment and shit.

I'm one of those people that misses the old, stupid Bond. If the villain isn't completely fucking crazy it's not a Bond movie. Skyfall was better than both the last two, but not as good as some of the classics.

@nintendoeats:

There was a topic when it came out but I'm too lazy to find it.

As for the movie, I liked it but I have serious problems with it. The last act sucks. The home alone bit was irritating but the entire set up and pay off of the 'showdown' was stupid as shit. It made the bad guys look like bumbling idiots and James Bond look like the terminator. I also realize they were going for a throwback feel with the movie so my next few issues may not be issues for some people because they are basically issues with old Bond movies. But the double entendre was so fucking obnoxious. The over the top villain was obnoxious. The villain feeling up Bond was oddly old fashioned and just fucking weird. And there was more I just don't remember it right now.

That said, it was a good movie. I really like Daniel Craig as Bond. This movie was much more interesting then Quantum of Solace was but was no where near as good as Casino Royale. I also can't understand why people are fucking losing their shit over the movie. It was fine. A fun, entertaining, popcorn film. But it does not deserve the extraordinary praise it is getting.

When you say you're not that big of a fan, do you mean you don't know who Money Penny is? Oh, and Sean Connery was supposed to make a cameo, but he didn't. I imagine that was going to be his role if so, and yes, the only reason I knew of that Aston Martin part was because I had read Roger Ebert's review beforehand, although I should have just guessed it was from one of the earlier films.

I like Bond a lot, but when I see the films it's mostly a longing for something better; there are some good ones, but overall I wish for something new, and this was pretty much it, but I was left disappointed because it didn't do everything right to me. I should mention that I pretty much like all the games minus a few (Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, although I did like it for a time, and I didn't like Agent Under Fire; I never played Tomorrow Never Dies, From Russia With Love, Bloodstone (although I'd like to) or the most recent Bond game, Legends).

I think the issue with Quantum is that they tried to re-purpose the franchise in the same mold as Bourne, all the while tying up a story started in the previous movie.

Watched back to back with Casino Royale it works a lot better. It's something of a denouement to the plot lines established there, and works better as part of the same movie (rather than a sequel or stand-alone experience).

Well, I'm not a member of that community but I don't see why he should be offensive to anyone who is or isn't part of that community. He's flamboyant but they don't play that up as the reason he's bad. There's a scene where he tries to get under Bonds skin but I saw it as him playing on the fact that Bonds always after the ladies and using that to disarm him. And Bond just throws it right back which was pretty great.

Of course like i said, I'm not part of that community so I could be completely wrong.

Seen it yesterday. Liked the opening action scene & animated intro. The rest was way too predictable and common to grip me. Too dry. Bloodless, both in the violence and sexiness department. Most of it was quite beautifully shot, as an upside - but also painfully dull.

I grew up with the Roger Moore Bond movies being on TV all the time, so Bond has to be silly and totally over-the-top for me. Unless I get a comically cliché supervillan building a moon fortress and stocking it with the finest earthly whores money and indoctrination can buy, it's just not my kind of Bond movie.

So yeah - Moonraker over Casino Royale for me. Thank you very much.

I loved it. Especially since it works as the anti-thesis of a modern action film that the Bourne series created - which mostly consists of tracing phones. I really loved the fact that high-end technology isn't up for shit and everyone succeeds only after going for the simplest solutions.

It only misses a few gadgets to be pure Bond, seriously. Craig was finally good, mixing a sociopath with that bit of Connery's chauvinism. Bardem's a great, cackling Bond villain. The action is fucking crazy enough. I like it. Especially after Quantum of Solace, one of the shittiest Bonds made.

Well, don't worry, I haven't seen anyone else mention the similarity, although it's there, and I'm not sure if anyone considers her a big deal. She has been in a lot of Bond films; she's one of the recurring characters just like Q, though I believe less so. I haven't seen all the Bond films; most of them I've only seen in small fragments when it comes to the earlier ones, but I guess I know Bond well enough to know these somewhat smaller details. I think the characters change though 'cause a lot of the time (I think) the character's played by a different actress, which may mean in the canon it's a different person. If whatever I just said is untrue, and someone reads this, you can correct me, 'cause I'm not entirely sure.

See above: also, D Another D has the scene where Brosnan drives his super fast land-speed-breaking car over a cliff and onto frozen waters, but then uses a parachute and the hood of the car engine to para-surf to safety. Yeah! That scene is exactly why DAD is shit, but is still better than QOS.
