Easily Keaton. Lloyd is good but doesn't come close to the others though. My "breaking the rules" option is Jacques Tati.

I also think Harpo Marx counts even though he was in sound films. Some of the shit he does in Duck Soup is painfully funny.

Cantinflas.

Because my parents are Mexican and thus he's the only one of these type of comedians I've seen. Always thought about checking out Chaplin though. So, I chose Chaplin in the poll.

Oooh, that's kinda harsh. Though Keaton's stunts are second to none, I regard Chaplin much more as an auteur than Keaton, who was much more dependent on the movie studios, especially with the arrival of sound films. Chaplin's movies also had, in my opinion, a more social and political edge to them, while maintaining a cinematography integrity. And goddamn, City Lights and Modern Times are absolute masterpieces.

I have to go with Chaplin here.

Also, this is a pretty random question to pose, here on GB.

For me it's got to be Keaton. The frantic nature of the films combined with Buster's deadpan get's me everytime. The things he would do to himself in the name of entertainment are simply incredible.

Also, if we're breaking the rules, I'd like to add Laurel and Hardy or even the wrongfully disgraced Rosco Arbuckle into the mix.

Not necessarily an appropriate comparison but I'm breaking the rules and picking Douglas Fairbanks, although not in the same category of performances, for me; the sheer physicality of all his work can't be beaten.

Chaplin didn't influence martial arts movies so much so he can go back to eating shoes like he should.

Somebody get this man a medal for actually being knowledgeable enough about these people to have an informed opinion.

And yeah, even if Chaplin only ever made Modern Times, he'd still win.

Chaplin's overrated in my book. Keaton is still hilarious 90 years later. For me, what it comes down to is what is fun to watch and Keaton is just more enjoyable than Chaplin. Don't get me wrong, The Gold Rush, The Kid and City Lights are classic, but I'll take Cops. or College any day.

Damn, GB has some real varied tastes in stuff. We've got threads on old silent films, Japanese cartoons, Korean pop, and wrestling created from a video game editor thingy.

I've never heard of Buster Keaton so I can't make an opinion.

It's the Internet. Is that much of a surprise?

This is about my response.

Imagine what's left over from the best Jackie Chan movies when you remove the Bruce Lee influences.

This question is posed in The Dreamers and has become one of those kinds of questions for me.

In retrospect I really should have had only the two poll options, but what're ya gonna do...?

I prefer Chaplin, personally. Keaton's "The General" isn't bad, though.

If I'm breaking the rules it's Laurel and Hardy without a question. Everyone is literally tied for second. They're all great.

Why choose between two comedic geniuses who helped revolutionize cinema in different but similar ways? I can't.
