To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Warner Bros. Records, the company commissioned a handful of modern artists to cover songs from their incredible back-catalogue of music.  I was skeptical about the album's quality, but man...I've gotta say that all the artists on here paid a TON of respect by not butchering the hell out of the original songs.

The highlights for me, as a rock fan, are:

Mastodon - "Just Got Paid" (originally by ZZ Top)
Avenged Sevenfold - "Paranoid" (originally by Black Sabbath)
James Otto - "Into The Mystic" (originally by Van Morrison)
Taking Back Sunday - "You Wreck Me" (originally by Tom Petty)
Adam Sandler - "Like A Hurricane" (originally by Neil Young)

The Adam Sandler cover is ESPECIALLY amazing, given that we rarely ever see Sandler do something serious in music.  All five of those covers floored me, as they hold true to the originals so damn well.  The rest of the tracks are all well done as well.

Plus, it's FUCKING MASTODON doing ZZ TOP!!!  It sounds A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!  Nonetheless, I think I'm most surprised with the Taking Back Sunday cover of Tom Petty, as that's just something that I didn't expect to be nearly as good.

So check it out.  You might be as surprised as I was at how well the covers came out for this:
