De-fragin my hardrive How long does it take ?

Hmm i decided to defrag my computer today ...YAY
However i'm told by my Media teacher that it can take several days .
How long does it normally take you guys to de-frag ?
If you do it at all .

I've never seen a defrag take several days, maybe if you're running programs while trying to defrag...

I've had HDDs take several hours to defrag (especially friends HDD's)

It's changed over the years.  I was a huge defrag fiend ever since I learned about the functionality in DOS.  However, on my current installation I haven't defragged ONCE (it's been a few years!)

Previously I was using a program called O&O defrag and I'm pretty sure it corrupted my HDD, so I've never defragged since.

Forgot to metion i have a 1TB hardrive with 691gb free .

Several days? I just did mine overnight. It was done by the morning but I don't think it took more than a couple hours. I've heard there really is no point in de-fragging but I don't know for sure.

It would help an ass load to mention the size of your hdd....

My 500 gig hdd takes around 2 hours to defrag, but I also defrag every 2 weeks......so depending on how fragmented your hdd is, it may take a while.

Several days though? Perhaps if you have a terabyte hdd that has not been defraged for a year.

I have not defraged since i got my computer . Thats since this christmas

Lol we all posted at once. I would say 3-5 hours max, granted you leave your computer alone while it is running.

Check out Defraggler. It is free, and is made by the folks who make Ccleaner. Good shit.

I hate the defrag tool in Vista. The XP one would tell you the progress so at least you have some idea. I've set mine to defrag a number of times, never seen it finish.

No kidding Alexander, I just installed Vista on my lappy and noticed that also. I left the utility open for what turned out to be an extra hour....just because I really had no indication it was finished. Bleh.

The Windows defrag is never good. Get Defraggler or JKDefrag. Not only are they both faster, but they're both far more effective than the standard Windows defragmenter.

You can also spend money on a retail defragger too, if you choose, but I wouldn't. The free ones are pretty much just as good...

I use DirMS, it's rather good, efficient and perhaps speedier than the default XP defrag tool. Though that one's just fine too so go for it.

No way it'll take several days. Just run the defrag overnight.

Used to use O&O and had no problems with it. Haven't looked for a vista defrag tool but pending on hard drive size is how it usually breaks down. Shouldn't be longer than 24 hours however, just have it run over night.

I'm answering the original post, it might take you like more than half a day, go play console games instead. Or you can simply do that before you sleeping. It also depends on how long was your last defrag and obviously it wouldn't take serveral days, unless your running an antique pc.

2-3 Hours for me and I used Vista's Defragger too.

Depends, my internal one is a tiny 120GB (Laptop) which takes nearly no time. My external hard drive is about 1TB though... SO that takes LOTS of time.

Left my hardrive defraging for over a day now and its only 42 % complete lulz .

my mate defraged his computer  with a 500 gb HDD and it took him 5 hrs  im gonna defrag my 1tb this will be fun ¬_¬

Ive left my computer defraging for 2 days now and its still only at 43 %

Don't use the computer while defragging.  It won't cause anything bad, bu it just doesn't work.
Other than that, your computer might just have lots of gaps to do I guess
