To answer the OP's question, it depends on the site/company. I don't know what Giantbomb does, but I do know people who are forum mods for a few different video game devs and they make a somewhat nice amount of money plus get to work from home.

I believe those are community managers which is a somewhat more sleazy job closer to PR.

No, they're forum mods. They patrol the boards, delete inappropriate comments, sometimes ban people, deliver consumer feedback to the devs, etc. I don't get how that would be sleazy. Community Managers usually control a company's Twitter, Facebook, and all that other social media crap.

I think only 10% of mods get paid on the internet, not on GB though.
