I notice notifications in my email before I notice them at the top of the site, so I almost never open it out and revert it to zero unless it annoys me
Do You Clear Out Your Inbox, or Just Let the Numbers Sit There
There was a bug there for a while where the numbers would hang around for a while after the messages were deleted. This made me very angry.
I have never changed my e-mail address, nor have I ever deleted any messages I have received. I have around 2000 unread messages piled up as well. My mom made the e-mail I'm still using to this day all the way back when I was around 7. (I'm now 16)
The very first e-mail I have in my inbox is from Saturday, July 21st, 2001 at 8:40 PM.
It says, " Here is your very first e-mail.
Love
Mom"
I also can see a bunch of e-mails sent to my 7 year old self from my grandpa who died a number of years ago.
It's so intense looking back at your life through the e-mails you've received.
I very rarely delete emails. In fact really the only emails I've ever deleted are spam.
@tobygw
That actually sounds really cool. It's unfortunate that I've only started to actively use my email account as of about 7 months ago, but I would totally be doing the same thing one of these days if I had started earlier.
Yeah I don't really find it too sad, but more just really cool and makes me feel good. Here's an excerpt from one from my other grandpa.
Hi Toby:
today I have just two questions:
Question 1: have your permanent front teeth appeared yet? I hope it's not too painful.
Question 2: how are your numbers skills coming along? For instance, can you do additions and subtractions yet without using the calculator?
lol

Leave it. I'll occasionally go back through with the idea I'll clean stuff out, but it's just a worthless venture.
I empty out my inbox as much as possible. A message will only sit in my inbox as long as it's relevant or as a remind to do something. Once it's no longer needed, I move it somewhere else. If it's something personal or something bill-related, I'll keep it in another folder. Anything else is trashed.

i read my comments but i leave them there. i don't see a point in deleting messages. it's all server side things so they have a lot of memory. i don't get a lot of email either. it's just subscribing things.
I read them all but delete almost none of them. That's just how I've always done. My Gamespot inbox is the same way. I have PM's in there from 2007.
EDIT - to be clear, I'm referring strictly to website account inboxes. I delete tons of stuff from my E-mail account.
On GB I make sure it always says 0, if it says 1 and I have no new messages, it annoys me.
My e-mail however has a shit-ton of unread stuff.
" I notice notifications in my email before I notice them at the top of the site, so I almost never open it out and revert it to zero unless it annoys me "Ohh you mean on Giantbomb... You should make that clear, though I think this poll is already totally screwed because people think you mean email =P
I always clear my email inbox and keep it empty. On Giantbomb I don't bother deleting any messages ever, I have just under 2500 read messages in there currently. 164 pages.
