So everybody listens to music, people tend to do it while doing other things/walking/car/partys etc. But I was round my grandparents house the other day, when I walked in they were just sitting in the living room listening to a new CD they just bought. I found it very odd but they tell me they do it often.

I don't know if its just me, but I don't think I could do that. I'm listening to music right now ("This'll Be My Year" from Train if your interested.) I listen to music quite often, I always have headphones/earphones on. But I don't think I could just sit back and listen to music.

I am quite a multitasker though, for example I find it hard to just sit back and watch a Giant Bomb video. I usually have the video on one side and the forum/amazon/eBay/Facebook/twitter on the other. I find it hard to just walk to and from work without my music, I'm hard to please.

Could you?

About 80% of the time that I listen to music it's to listen to music. Only about 20% of it is for background noise while I'm doing something else.

When I started listening to the Battlefield 3 soundtrack...I found myself staring at nothing and just absorbing the music, it was hypnotizing.

But usually, I always do something else while listening, even if it's just surfing the webs.

All depends on the kind of music. If its a new CD that I think is suited for that kind of listening I will.

Wow so many of you, you do know I meant just sitting in a chair and doing nothing else other than listen to the music.

If your answer is still yes then goddamn I have a short attention span.

Nope, but I'm rarely doing just one thing at a time. Even when watching movies on my PC will I have half the window dedicated to web surfing.

Yes I can listen to music while sitting down. But when I'm in the groove I walk back and forth., then my imagination kicks in.

Sometimes I pull up a comfy chair and sit out in the sun but unless it's summertime I never do that.

I used to, but my wife would probably kill me now if she found me sitting in a chair doing nothing when there's so much else to be done. Damn you, responsibility.

Multitasking is not possible for humans. Try solving a difficult math problem while writing a story. You can not. You can enjoy background noise while preforming a task, or what people are trying to describe when they say multitasking is efficiently staggering tasks. As for just listening to music, sure. When I listen to Metallica's Call of Ktulu I picture a long roving view of an antarctic wasteland culminating in a scene featuring the mythical Cthulhu sitting upon a throne of ice. If I were concentrating on something else while listening, I doubt the imagery received while listening would be as potent. So, sometimes yes, I listen without further distractions.

I do that a lot. It's nice to just take a time out and enjoy it for what it is. I also enjoy giving music my fullest attention sometimes, just lay down in bed for a while, close my eyes and chillax.

I do pretty much all of my music listening as background noise while doing other stuff, but I still listen to the music. I also have a real good memory so if I'm bored I can pretty much just remember the full song off my head and "listen" to it whenever I want.

Occasionally, but as I've been getting older I find it hard to just sit down and dedicate time to listening to something. Usually when I'm listening to an album for the first time it will be in the car when I'm driving. So much to do and so little time!

I did it a couple of hours ago, but no, i do agree with you. Sometimes i just like to chill. especially if its with songs i REALLY like, i get lost in the music and sing along lol.

I usually play games when listening to music or on the move.

If I didn't, then I'd make a pretty bad album reviewer. I do at least once or twice for anything I plan to review. Sometimes I turn on a visualizer so that I can't get distracted and start surfing GB.

Though when I'm trying to decide what to review, I'm usually surfing the web or playing Spelunky. In the case of Spelunky, that always becomes the secondary activity, and I do a pretty bad job.

Still yes. Even if it's not for a mix of some sort or just sitting and jamming. This plus my papasan chair = decompress the stress.

It can be nice to have it in the background, but I find to get the most out of it you should give it your full attention.

sounds more like casual-ADD than multitasking.

I used to sit and listen to music way more often but I still do it. When I wanna REALLY listen to a new record or throw one in for the first time I'll just sit there and listen. Sometimes with headphones while outside, other times on my stereo while chilling on the couch.

You should ask your grandparents if they're doing it to really appreciate the music on a deeper level (basically ask them if they are music nerds in a way that they doesn't make you sound like you're offending them^^).

Actually listening to music properly and appreciating it is almost an entirely different thing to just having it on in the background while you do something else. You should try it some time, even with an album you think you know well just from passive listening. Actually devote your attention to it and I'll think you'll be surprised how much you learn about it that you didn't notice before.

Being an album reviewer sounds awesome. Never got into the whole blogging thing, but if I did, it would have to be that.

Very rarely when I'm stressed will I just sit and listen to music but even then I'm quite often more focused on whatever I'm thinking about at the time.

Yes, I usually try to give it my full attention when I listen. Especially if it's a new CD. I sit back and listen to it all the way to the end. My HORRIBLE attention span sometimes doesn't allow me to do other things while I listen to music.

When I was a teenager, I did it all the time. Just lie back and pop a cassette into my Walkman. These days I hardly ever do that, though. I don't listen to as much as I did back then, either. However, as I've said before there are certainjazzalbums which demand my full attention. When I put them on, I revert to my teenage self and zen to the music.

All the time. After a long day with school and work, there's nothing better than just kick back and let the music soothe you.
