If so, how do you cope with it? Winter's coming up and I know I'm not going to enjoy it. Any tips on how to stay happy?

My misery is pretty consistent all year round.

I'm S.A.D during the summer. It's so hot over here it makes me miserable. The winters at the coldest time of the year is like 40F. The hottest time of winter is around the 60F's so it's perfect.

I'm one of those people who are in a better mood when the sky is overcast, or if its raining/snowing. Winter is my favourite season so I'm looking forward to it. Summer is crap partly because its hot and I sweat a lot, but mostly because I get comments from people (mostly older relatives) about it being a beautiful day, and that I should be out having fun in the sun. To which I reply, "go fuck yourself."

While I certainly don't have any actual disorder, I'm with you on this one. I HATE summer, especially here in Indiana where it gets insanely hot and super humid, but I love the winter (where it gets quite cold and considerably snowy).

@Incryptic: hmm where do you live?

Winter is kinda harsh in Calgary but I feel like its actually cozier indoors during the winter. I sleep better when its cold outside.

#7 Posted by Incryptic (28 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago
@playastation: I live in Michigan. The winter's are harsh sometimes, but it's Michigan so you can never predict the weather.

Taking vitamin D helps in the winter you lack the sun which gives you a good amount of vitamin D alot they have special lights for SAD but I never tried them they seem to work well from what I read.I got clinical depression winters certainly make it more worst so there are things that can help exercise is great to even in the winter you just got to dress for it or if you got a treadmill that helps.

#9 Posted by Fajita_Jim (1463 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Not really. I love summer evenings even if it is hot and humid: the sun being up till 8:55pm is always a plus. Of course, a few miles down the road you cross into Central Time and that 8:55pm becomes 7:55pm, so if I were over there I probably wouldn't be so fond of it. That extra hour of sunlight has lit many a good times.

Spring and fall are my favorite seasons, however, as one is coming out of the doldrums of winter and the other has that awesome, crisp fall air that just reinvigorates the spirit.

Winter I could do without. Not much sun, cold as fuck, and my hands crack and bleed no matter how much moisturizer I use. Know what else sucks about winter? All the fucking holidays. I hate em.

@JEC03: Vitamin D supplements? And, I've picked up running everyday. I'll still do it in the winter, with the appropriate attire, of course.

Yes there supplements you can pretty much get them at any drug store if your more interested about it look it up you'll  be surprised how many benefits they have.

I don't know if I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, but nothing disheartens/pisses me off more than waking up to a blaring alarm clock and not wanting to leave my cocoon of blankets because it's a second god damn ice age outside. Plus, the shower always pumps out the coldest water it can before it finally starts to warm up. That's pretty irritating.

I do. January and February are really the only months it kicks in here in august. Really for about 3-4 weeks. I usually just try to power through it now that I know what it is. I used to not realize it was a thing.

Exercise always helps, though. White light does, too. I don't take pills for anything, so I can't attest to that.
#17 Posted by imsh_pl (3289 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Not really, I live in an area where it's neither ridiculously hot during the summer nor ridiculously cold during the winter.

#18 Posted by rmanthorp (3352 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I do suffer from this more than I like to think about. Luckily the holidays make me feel good and GODDAMNSOMANYGAMESARECOMINGOUTSOON.

Yes, I fucking hate it. Unfortunately a lot of my coping involves wanting to eat a ton of food.

I plan on taking a trip in January and sitting on a beach somewhere.

#23 Posted by KarlPilkington (2549 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I just don't like it when it gets dark at like 3pm. Makes it seem like the day is already over.

#24 Posted by RIDEBIRD (1206 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I hate snow. I hate -20 degrees celcius. I hate it. Fuck it. I can't stand this country any longer.

I'm moving to the south of France when my get rich quick schemes finally pay off.

I love winter. I'm currently working my ass off to spend most of it at MCRD San Diego though. God I hope they know what winter means.

#27 Posted by Klaimore (928 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I love dark and gloomy days those make me happy although I do enjoy the occasional sunny day as well I guess I love all the seasons, but I do feel for the people that don't.

#28 Posted by believer258 (7891 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

This summer has been extremely hot here in NC. Nearly, or over, 100 degree weather every single day.

Winter? I love winter. No overbearing sun, no sticky sweat, no horrible outside working conditions, no sun up until 9:00, none of that crap. Too cold? Wear more clothes! Chapped lips and cracked hands? Chapstick and moisturizing lotion!

Also, all the holidays and fun stuff comes along in Winter. Thanksgiving and Christmas* FTW!!!!

*Or the other holidays, I forget all the names but all the major religions seem to have something around these times...

...OH! That seasonal depression thing... yeah... I actually get a bit depressed when allergy season comes along. I am allergic to pollen, and every year when pollen gets really, really strong, for about two or three weeks I get extreme allergies. Nearly debilitating, embarassingly bad allergies. It actually must look like I have an extreme form of the flu. I sneeze so much I bleed. So you could say that I have a bit of depression during the spring because I feel completely worthless, but it's far closer to "severely annoyed" than "depressed".

i live in Vancouver so its mild all throughout the year

#30 Posted by darkdragonmage99 (584 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I love winter it's summer that depresses me

#31 Posted by Fribain (82 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

...there's actually something called Seasonal Affective Disorder? wat?
seems like people are just trying to make "not liking a certain type of weather" sound a lot more serious than it actually is because having a disorder is "cool"
seriously, what the fuck
not liking hot/cold weather is a disorder my ass

#32 Edited by Jay_Ray (663 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

@Fribain: Some people become deeply depressed (suicidal even) during seasonal change, that is who actually has S.A.D.

For me, I hate rain and mild weather (0 to 15 degree Celsius), either be col enough to snow or nice and sunny, no where in between. Hence why I hate winter in Vancouver.

I live in Hawaii...so no. I LOVE our winter. Its nice and cool (low to high 70s), breezy, and just rainy enough to make everything green and alive.
We also get snow..you just have to go to a couple of specific mountains that are tall enough.

So my suggestion is to move to a location that gets the kind of weather you enjoy.

#35 Posted by spudtastic (542 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

The 'sun lamp' alt. You don't mention your location, so it's hard to advise. I'm in Cleveland, so one learns to thrive despite depression.

#36 Posted by TwilitEnd656 (616 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Not really. There are seasons when I feel my best (winter) but there isn't any point in the year where I just feel awful because of it.

#37 Posted by MrKlorox (11082 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Not looking forward to it either. I hate winter here because the skies are always clear and it looks like it's hot and sunny outside, but the biting wind just cuts through you and chills to the bone. I wouldn't mind if it was cold and windy if it was overcast and rainy, but being bright and sunny feels like a big "fuck you" from nature.

#38 Posted by Aetheldod (2480 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Nope ... I just hate mornings

#39 Posted by TheUnsavedHero (1161 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Winter is my favorite. Fuck the sun. The roads are more fun to drive in during a blizzard anyways.

#40 Posted by salad10203 (648 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I have it, and I have found that you should enjoy summer while you can, so you won't regret not going out while you had the chance.

#41 Posted by yinstarrunner (1027 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Yep winter gets me. I love sunny days and I love rainy days, but days that are just overcast bum me out. That happens a lot in winter around here.

#42 Posted by BrandonPckrfn (56 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Well, Seattle doesn't have seasons, so no. Just overcast, warm overcast, and cold overcast.

I miss Colorado, and the awesome winters though!

#43 Posted by supermike6 (3502 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I didn't know such a disorder existed. Personally, Fall and Spring are my favourite seasons. Winter and Summer are just so mainstream.

#44 Posted by AssInAss (1904 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

You should watch this documentary ("Marketing of Madness") about how every single mental disorder has no scientific fact or proof behind it. They're all created to sell drugs.

That might make you feel better. Plus, I'm sure everyone gets angry/depressed when winter comes around, no one likes the cold. Especially if you're hypothyroid.
#45 Posted by Teoball (408 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I love winter and snow. Don't like summer and heat much.

#46 Posted by dudeglove (6264 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Moscow doesn't fuck around. It's either blisteringly hot or bollock-frostburn freezing, so I only have to put up with one or the other.

#47 Edited by Chop (1717 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I'm all about seasonal aesthetics.

I don't mind winter as long as the sun isn't out. When it's overcast or snowing outside, I think winter absolutely beautiful; the sun makes it all look like shit though.

#48 Posted by ShockD (2189 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

The weather doesn't affect my PC so... no.

#49 Posted by intoblivion (314 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

you mean like Hay Fever?

#50 Posted by Bucketdeth (7938 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I really don't because the best shit happens in the Winter, I love snow, I love Christmas, I love New Years.

COME ON BE HAPPY, TURN THAT MOTHER FUCKING FROWN UPSIDE DOWN.
