I leave on my PC's at work and home. Just an old habit. Also, I use remote access so I never know when I'll need it so it's always on. Anyone else crazy like me?

#3 Posted by wolf_blitzer85 (5250 posts) -

Yes. I see no reason to turn it off unless I'm opening it up or it's just in need of a restart.

#4 Posted by Toms115 (2314 posts) -

nope. no point leaving it running if i'm asleep or not at home.

#5 Posted by Inkerman (1448 posts) -

Used to leave it on, since I got my new fan though it's way too loud for my bedroom. But I have my laptop out in the kitchen and I have that one on all the time.

#6 Posted by MrKlorox (11198 posts) -

Always running since it also acts as my media player (no TV) and I can't sleep without something playing.

#7 Posted by gla55jAw (2685 posts) -

I turn it off at night. My computer doesn't seem to run as nicely if it's on for a few days at a time without a restart, so I just turn it off when I go to sleep and put it on when I wake up.

No, I'm not a barbarian!

#9 Posted by PeasantAbuse (5137 posts) -

No, it's only on when I'm using it.

#10 Posted by Fobwashed (1888 posts) -

@Enigma777: New Icon. Is the era of HitlerChu over or is this some temporary meme thing?

#11 Posted by mylifeforAiur (3481 posts) -

No. I turn my PC off when I go to bed.

#13 Posted by Jasta (2217 posts) -

Yup, unless I'm away for more than a few days its always on.

#14 Posted by iam3green (14390 posts) -

kind of, i leave it on standby when i go to bed. it's pretty much off except it's easy to turn on.

#15 Posted by JJOR64 (18892 posts) -

Nope.

sleep or off

#17 Posted by Aronman789 (2676 posts) -

Yes, out of bad habit, even though I should since I'm wasting a lot of electricity.

#18 Posted by matthias2437 (985 posts) -

I don't normally turn off my work pc, because it is not in my room. But my gaming PC is in my room and is like a space heater so I normally at least put it to sleep when I go to bed.

I like saving money, I have an OCD for letting things waste electricity so I turn my stuff off (except my microphone amp, because the tube takes forever to warm up hot enough for use) or gather dust (I sell old gear and instruments quickly once I deem the stuff unecessary). I also like doing a little something for the environment, we'd be better off if businesses and private users would turn off what doesn't need to run overnight or over weekends. You can spare 3-5 minutes of boot-times.

I turn it off when I'm not using it. My pc boots pretty fast too which makes it nice.

On. But waking up sometimes at 2am with the pc fan cranking for no apparent reason can get pretty annoying.

This makes me feel extra bad for leaving it on while I'm away in Korea for weeks at a time. In my defense tho, I live alone and part of why I go is for work and sometimes I need to access files on my system so remote desktop is the only way I can do that short of giving someone my keys and my passwords. I wonder how much I'd save on a monthly bill if I started leaving my PC off. . . I do turn off my monitors and it does go into a sort of standby mode.

off, my comp only takes about 20 sec to turn on. There's no reason for it to be on 24/7 and waste electricity. My work comp, is on 24/7 though in case I need to access files from it at home.

#24 Posted by Subjugation (4716 posts) -

I put it in sleep mode while I sleep. I figure it's only fair.

#25 Posted by Jeust (10452 posts) -

I did when connection speeds were terrible and I was downloading something. But now connections are much better, so I don't need to.

#26 Posted by Video_Game_King (35838 posts) -

Yes, all the time. I'm not sure if it's causing any problems, even though I've got tons of problems with my computer (I believe it's more due to it being a piece of crap).

#27 Posted by Hizang (8534 posts) -

No, my iMac boots up so fast that there is no point leaving it on.

#28 Posted by Fripplebubby (1027 posts) -

I do, but all this talk of wasting electricity is making me feel bad. I will still leave it on for downloads, though.

I leave my PC DVR on while I'm at work but I usually remember to shut it off before I go to sleep. Although I tend to leave it on from Friday to Sunday night.

sleep

#31 Posted by benpicko (1985 posts) -

I turn it off. Duh.

#32 Posted by Yanngc33 (4496 posts) -

Fuck yeah I do because when I need it, it has to be ready to go

#33 Posted by BabyChooChoo (4251 posts) -

Yes, because fuck the environment. Also, utilities are included in my rent.

#34 Posted by innacces14 (735 posts) -

I don't. I even got the power strip at a close enough reach to shut the power going into the system altogether. Even hit the power button just to drain what's left in the comp.

#35 Posted by Natedogg2 (444 posts) -

I used to have this habit of turning off my PC when I wasn't using it (mostly because my old computer's power supply couldn't handle the computer on all the time). When I got a new computer, I stuck to that habit until earlier this year when I realized "Hey, my computer can handle being on all the time". And now I leave it on unless I'm asleep (since it's in my bedroom).

#36 Posted by Afroman269 (7387 posts) -

I turn it off when I sleep and let it hibernate when I'm at work.

#37 Posted by Shikon (175 posts) -

i sued to have my pc on 24/7 because slow boots lazyness and remote desktoping. now with my new pc i turn it off when i go to work and bed. its a lot colder now in my room =/

#38 Posted by phrosnite (3518 posts) -

No. It's more like 15/7. When I go to sleep I shut it down. Been working now for over 3 years and I had no problems whatsoever.

#39 Posted by Vodun (2370 posts) -

Leaving your computer on feels like global warming. Some say it's good some say it's bad. I don't trust either because they're all funded by powerful lobby groups, so I leave my computer in a zombie like un-death so it's neither on or off!

#40 Posted by ervonymous (1297 posts) -

I have no reason to leave it on unless I'm using it at the moment. Waste of electricity, fans don't last forever and neither do the more delicate components.

#41 Edited by Fattony12000 (6961 posts) -

YOU NEED TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER WHEN NOT IN USE.

STANDBY/SLEEP IS NOT THE SAME AS TURNING IT OFF.

Obviously left on overnight on sleep or whatever won't do any harm, but you have to kill the power completely at some point, all computer parts are perishable. I really dislike how it appears to no longer be standard practice to turn off your system when not in use.

Of course, servers and torrent people are a different story.

I pay the electricity bill so no

#43 Posted by Quipido (610 posts) -

No way! I need to pay the bills and all hardware has limited life - I think it´s stupid to use it up by leaving it on just because. Also it´s not the worst idea to save the remains of enviroment.

Horrible waste of electricity don't you think? Don't be a dick, turn it off! TM

#49 Posted by Niall_Sg1 (362 posts) -

I used to leave it on all the time, but since moving into my own flat I turn everything off when i'm not using it. Electricity is expensive dawg.

#50 Posted by SlasherMan (1725 posts) -

Yes, it doesn't really consume much power, so the effect on the electricity bill is minimal.
