Coming to theaters May 29, 2009

Why has there been absolutely no hype at all for this movie? Maybe people don't really know what it is, so I'll explain. It's a horror movie... directed by Sam Raimi and Ivan Raimi... that should be enough to make people shit their pants.

If you still don't understand, Sam and Ivan Raimi are the writers and directors of the classic Evil Dead flicks. The Evil Dead series is hands down my favorite horror series ever (Even though Army of Darkness isn't really a horror) They were able to revolutionize the horror genre by creating a horribly eerie atmosphere through great camera work and scary ass monsters.

Though this movie looks to be more serious like the first Evil Dead, I think it's great to see a scary horror flick today that doesn't rely on the gore or annoying teenagers.

Looks corny as hell, brah. (Seriously) Maybe because there is that one guy from the Mac/Apple commercials just staring into hell.

#3 Posted by End_Boss (3220 posts) -

Looks decent. Hopefully it will break the recent run of bad horror flicks I've seen.

It's either this movie, or Up (Released on the same day). What a difficult choice.

#5 Posted by DECA555 (400 posts) -

I........will be seeing up.

This looks like shit.

Yeah, that is a tough choice since PIxar is the most successful (in terms of critical acclaim) movie studio in history. Not only have they never made a critically panned movie they can't even be described as having made a middling film.

I feel like I just watched the entire movie from the trailer. Particularly, the acting doesn't look too promising, although the older woman seemed pretty good.

I'd be careful, too. This is pretty much advertisement and I know the mods don't appreciate it.

Looks like we got a teacher's pet here. He's trying to bring something to our attention that we may be interested in. It's Sam Raimi and I love the Evil Dead movies and still hadn't heard of this film. Besides, he's not gaining any fucking money from doing this. He's trying to inform us.

I'm glad there is no hype for the movie. Seriously it looks like nothing new compared to many of the crappy horror flicks in the theaters today. Seriously we need another alfred hitchcock to come along and bring classic suspense back to the theaters. Although suspense and horror are two different genres :P

#10 Posted by teh_destroyer (3566 posts) -

It doesn't look that good, I think Sam Raimi is way over due for retirement.

#11 Posted by LiveOrDie1212 (926 posts) -

i would rather see Sam Raimi make another Spider-Man movie (where he has total control over the movie, not the studio bullshit). SM3 was shitty as fuck!!

That looks awful. At least what the trailer is presenting.

#14 Posted by JCGamer (663 posts) -

I am a big pansy and will not be seeing this movie--although I do appreciate Sam Rami going back to his roots.  This movie does look a bit more on the serious side than the Evil Dead series, but it'll be interesting to see what a more mature Rami can do with horror.  That being said---I have all 3 Evil Dead DVD's signed by Mr. Bruce Campbell himself!!!  My wife just shakes her head when she sees those movies on the shelf...

The trailer makes me want to sleep with nose plugs. BUT WAIT, THEN MY MOUTH WILL BE EXPOSED!! OH NO!

#16 Posted by Fr0Br0 (3091 posts) -

So far it has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 18/18. I laugh at those who will miss the only good horror movie to come out in the last 5 years...

#17 Edited by jakob187 (21670 posts) -

It's gotten 100% on Rotten Tomatoes...but a handful of the reviews are ALSO from horror-specific websites....and only one is from a top critic.

Also, Frobro...aren't you the same person that complained about Terminator Salvation being PG-13?  Guess what THIS movie is rated?  Yep.  Sure is, buddy.

Unless i'm forgetting something Sam Raimi hasn't made a bad film, so I fully expect this to be great. And yes, Spider-Man 3 was amazing.

#19 Posted by DarkEnzanArikado (189 posts) -

This movie is trash. No offense but I love horror movies and watch them all the time but lately horror movies have been trash and this adds to the huge pile that already is now.

The Gift was good for one reason:  Katie Holmes' tits.  Other than that, he also made the horrific Spider-Man 3.  So yeah, he HAS made a couple of bad movies.

For some reason, a lot of people also don't like A Simple Plan, but I thought that movie was excellent.

I can't wait for this movie man! Sam Raimi is still a genius. Eat it Ellen Page!

I really enjoyed The Gift. Usually, I don't like the idea of the supernatural being mixed with things like a court case because often it falls to a deus ex machina magical ending but it all played out really well. And yes, Katie Holmes' tits are fabulous. To be honest, I really don't understand the hate for Spider-Man 3. I still think it's the best comic book movie out there.
#23 Posted by buzz_clik (6975 posts) -

I very much appreciate the huge role Raimi has played in the horror (well, comedy/horror) genre. Everything I've seen about this film, however, just makes it seem like a hive of horror clichés, all of them desperately scrambling over each other to fly not-so-subtly into your eyes and ears.

Maybe it is a good film. If that's the case, the marketing is way off the mark.

Doc Ock > Venom
Sandman > Venom
Rabid chihuahuas > Venom
Fire ants > Venom
Babies with cholera > Venom
The Muppets > Venom

Starting to catch the drift?  Venom ruined that movie.

I know. And I hate Venom so I was incredibly pleased his character only had a small, but necessary, part. Really, had MARVEL just listened to Raimi when he said he had no interest in the Venom character, they'd have saved themselves so much trouble.

I might be going to see it with a friend soon, I think it looks decent from the trailer I've seen.

#27 Edited by Stephen_Von_Cloud (1530 posts) -

Does anyone know what Evil Dead is?  If you liked those movies, which you have to or you simply don't enjoy a fun movie, you need to be at least interested.   Horror movies need a shot in the arm and an Evil Dead style movie would be great.

I like Pixar don't get me wrong, but Cars was completely a middling movie.  I feel like it only got as much love as it did because it was a Pixar movie.

believe it or not, but its getting good reviews so far...its avg on metacritic so far is about a 83/100, but thats based on only 3 reviews...i dont know, i might see it, im a big justin long fan so yeah...plus i usually dont say if a movie is going to be shit by its trailers....i think in bruges (my favorite movie) had shit trailers, but it turned out to be a oscar nominated movie.....so we'll see

#30 Posted by jakob187 (21670 posts) -

I'm not saying it'll be a bad movie.  I'm simply saying that Raimi's projects that aren't franchises are typically less than spectacular, but they are usually still above the curve when compared against everything else.

However, anyone trying to compare this to Evil Dead in some way...well, it makes me laugh, since the movie is PG-13.  I've read a couple of reviews that mentioned some gore in the movie...but the rating for the movie mentions nothing about gore.  It simply says:

Sequences of horror violence, terror, disturbing images, and language

All I know is that I'm hoping the movie turns out to be as good as the reviews make it out to be.  However, I remember the last time Raimi was involved with a PG-13 horror-related movie.
#31 Posted by TooWalrus (13195 posts) -

I'm not too into PG-13 horror, actually.

#32 Posted by Equal_Opportunity_Destroyer497 (559 posts) -

I'll give Raimi the benefit of the doubt, but I still think it looks like yet another dumbed-down Hollywood horror movie.

Evil Dead was not made such an amazing movie series alone by being so terribly gory or anything.  If it did for you then it didn't for me, and I don't think that's what made it special for so many people.  It was the tone and fun of it.  Read the Rotten Tomatoes quotes.  I'll reserve judgement but everyone is saying it's gross and fun and completely evokes the feeling of Evil Dead.

Also when you look at horror movies that earn R ratings now (the torture porn of the Saw movies and the mutant rape of The Hills Have Eyes) Evil Dead looks like a kids movie in comparison.  For all we know it's just as violent.

EDIT:  a quote from Variety:

Sam Raimi returns to his roots in "Drag Me to Hell," a flagrantly schlocky horror yarn that will titillate the teens without alienating the director's far pickier fanboy contingent, who will find the "Evil Dead"-style action they've been clamoring for in a surprisingly potent PG-13 package.

If you had read past comments...a handful of those are from horror review sites that will suck Raimi's dick dry for a month if given the opportunity, and only ONE of the reviews is from a Top Critic.

Again, read the comments you are talking about...then read the reviews.  They also talk about this having gore...and yet the rating gives no implication of that.  I've been keeping track of this movie for a while.

Also, the "tone and fun of it" that you talk about - would that have to do with certain scenes such as:
  • Ash chopping his hand off and getting beaten up by it?
  • A chainsaw that rains blood whenever it slices something?
  • A tree that rapes a chick in the woods?
  • A skeleton ballerina dancing in the woods?
  • A grotesque grandmother in the basement who later has her head attached to her spine and elongated from her body?
  • A giant monster that busts through the doorway and starts spewing blood?
  • Demonic references from the Necronomicon and jokes made about it?

Needless to say...all of that TONE and FUN you are talking about...yeah...it's all related to the R rating of the franchise.  Sorry to burst your bubble.

As I've said time and time again, I'm not saying I'm unwilling to give the movie a chance.  I'm hoping like Hell that it doesn't disappoint.  HOWEVER, I REMEMBER THE GRUDGE!!!  It started out by getting great reviews also...because that's what the studio wanted to let out for critical reception.  After the movie went wide on the day of release, however, that suddenly changed...QUICKLY changed!  I remember it all.

Therefore, I reserve judgment of the movie ITSELF until I've seen it.  However, I'm allowed to have low expectations solely because of the ways that things have been handled with Raimi's PG-13 efforts in the past.
#37 Edited by Stephen_Von_Cloud (1530 posts) -

Again, R ratings are different now for horror movies.  I'm sure a monster that spews blood means nothing to the ratings board compared to mutants raping a girl in a trailer.  It's stupid and silly and FUN.  How is Ash chopping off his hand and it having a mind of its own not stupid and fun?  Do you take the violence seriously and go "SHIT HE CUT HIS HAND OFF!" and that's what you enjoyed about it?  WTF?    If you just want gore go watch Saw.

The end thing is you don't know what's in the movie so to say you do is just wrong.  People say it's gory in reviews.  I'll believe them for the time being.

Well, I just got back from seeing it, and it fucking rocks. I have to say I can't believe this was rated PG-13, it really seemed like it would be an R rating. I guess maybe it's just because they replaced the blood and gore with vomit and a bunch of other gross fucking shit. Seriously, even if you're not into horror flicks, you should check out this one. And if you are into horror, there's no reason in hell to miss this one!!

#40 Posted by jakob187 (21670 posts) -

Well, I saw the midnight showing last night, and here's all I can say:

FUCKING A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

There were probably 40 people at the midnight showing, and by the time the movie ended, I was pissed that there were only 40 people in the theatre!  I WAS PISSED THAT PEOPLE DIDN'T SHOW UP, AND I WASN'T EVEN THAT PSYCHED ABOUT THE FLICK!!!

It's everything you would want Raimi's movies to be like:  funny, creepy, goofy, gross...quite simply put, it gives me confidence that he can STILL make another Evil Dead movie and it would absolutely incredible!!!

If you DON'T see this movie, then you are doing yourself a massive injustice.  The funniest part is that the movie seems to play the "let's see how many things we can put in Alison Lohman's mouth".  lol  Just so...man...seriously...yeah, this flick is incredibly incredible!

This looks...eh...Generic.

Spiderman 3 wa
s garbage, not for venom, but the fact they cramed in too much at once, and EVERYONE FUCKING CRIED IN THAT MOVIE, the last 30minutes was a bawlfest of uneeded emotions. Spiderman crying mary jane crying sandman crying, harry crying. sandman saying yea i did bad...can i go now? and spiderman saying uh sure I need to go cry some more.

From what a buddy told me, a really good horror movie to watch is something called Martyrs. I saw the box, it has a warning on the front of it lol.

I have and I loved it. But these are two completely different horror movies and I like what the direction this movie is going with more.
#47 Posted by jakob187 (21670 posts) -
@WilliamRLBaker: William, I've been trying to play nice, so please...understand that I mean this with as much respect as I can give - stuff it, shut up, and go to the fucking theatre.  You are doing yourself a massive injustice by not rushing to the theatre.  I was a naysayer, I thought it was going to be generic and mediocre, and I was deftly wrong.  This is one of those movies that you HAVE to catch in the theatres.  Quite simply put, it's pretty fucking awesome.

@zityz: I will say that every single shred of media, assets, advertising, and trailers for this movie DO NOT show what the movie truly is.  They make it look generic as Hell, but this is a Sam Raimi movie through-and-through.  There is no disappointment to be found, and it deserves the 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes that it is currently holding on to.
#48 Posted by ADDTasty (109 posts) -

Yeah, Jakob is right. People really need to be watching this flick.

#49 Posted by Coltonio7 (3156 posts) -

I saw it last night actually. That movie knows how to do a pop-up scare...and that's about it. The pop-ups are REALLY good, but there's not much more to the movie than that. Also, it has such a "lolwut" ending.

#50 Edited by jakob187 (21670 posts) -
@Coltonio7: ?!?!?!?!?!?!  WHAT?!  You must be crazy, sir.  And dood, the ending was AWESOME!  PERFECT!  How else SHOULD it have ended?  However, I'm curious if there was anything after the credits or in the credits or anything.  I need to research that...

Other than that, yeah...it wasn't a SCAAAARY movie or anything...but it was a Raimi horror flick.  That made me happy enough.

Also...nosebleed.  That's all I'm going to say.  Nosebleed.  BEST  SHIT  EVER!!!
