December 21, 2012. That is the day that the world is supposed to end. You probably think its bullshit, right? Well, Julia Gillard (the PM of Australia) has confirmed it. She is obviously my joking and this is 100% serious. Obviously...

I am not able to embed the video as I am on a mobile device, but here is the link to said video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v;=ebtj3gDaE64

How should people react to this? Some think it is a disgrace, others think it is quite funny. Where do you fall in?

#2 Posted by NekuSakuraba (6812 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

She is obviously "not" joking is what I meant to type. Silly auto-correct!

@NekuSakuraba: Link lead me nowhere....

#4 Edited by Rainbowkisses (382 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

The link just led me to the youtube frontpage.

#5 Posted by Kerned (1119 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

Hm. For some reason it just redirects to my YouTube home page. Stupid YouTube.

OT, if she isn't joking than that's a little sad. Idiot politicians are a fact of life no matter where you live.

Maybe it's some metaphorical thing where it's just the end of the world for that island as the UK decides to convert it back to a prison colony.

#10 Posted by hidys (848 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

This is obviously a result of the carbon tax and boat people.

#11 Posted by Eviternal (122 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

For those outside Aus, Triple J are a subsidiary of the (Australian) ABC; they're the cool 'n' hip side of government broadcasting.

I can't tell if you're serious, the video is clearly a joke. It's not hilarious, but I giggled.

Clearly a harmless joke.

People believeing again and again in stuff like this shows you just how retarded humanity is...

#15 Edited by commonoutlier (136 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

My astronomy class had to do an assignment about the origins of these prophecies about 2012 and the pure ridiculousness about them. There is literally no scientific basis for them, and if it were true, its literally something that the government or anyone could NOT hide, since some of the attempted claims for what's going to happen could be easily seen and determined by amateur astronomers if it were true.

The video though seems to be purely for laughs, I don't see how in anyway it could be serious...that last comment she makes especially would be out of place if it weren't a joke. Also this.

Gotta love when people talk about how dumb humanity or society is and proceed to show that they themselves can't spell. But yea she obviously IS joking. Relax...

I know Australians are known for a very quirky sense of humor, but this is a bit hard to read.

the dumbest thing is that the mayan calendar in xultun disproves the fact that the mayans thought the world would end since they have dates past the 13th b'aktun or whatever (I was reading about it yesterday, I WAS BORED OKAY)

When did it ever stop being a penal colony?

#22 Posted by DoctorWelch (2611 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

What does it say about me that every bit of my being knows the world isn't going to end, but I still desperately want to see it happen because that would be fucking crazy and kind of awesome and, dude, just imagine if it actually did.

Be happy that your country is a place where having a sense of humour in government is ok.

#24 Posted by psylah (1584 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

The best part is that if it really IS the end of the world, and she's wrong to have mocked it, she doesn't have to worry about it ruining her political career because we're all dead anyways!

Don't worry, citizen. New Starcraft is being developed by top scientists at this very moment to combat the looming danger of K-Pop.

I'm romanian, this is not my native tongue. How many languages do you know?

#28 Edited by MrXakaRebel (36 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

Admittedly I'm only fluent in English but I am learning French and Spanish, I can honestly say I'll be sure to do my best to spell correctly in those other languages as well and thank anyone who corrects me when I make a mistake. You're welcome.

It's a stark contrast to the US govt who are just in a "they're laughing at you, not with you" situation.

Yep, even had a section about that in the essay I had to write.

"Perhaps, though, what is most damaging to those who believe the prophecies about the end of the Maya “Long Count” calendar is that there are texts that refer to dates beyond Baktun 13, such as one by King Pacal of Palenque that predicted the anniversary of his accession would occur on October 15, 4772. Only one prediction on the Mayan calendar even mentions a date in 2012, and the texts do not even begin to hint at the end of the world at this date."

I think literally everyone in this topic is joking, and some of you aren't getting that. Lol.

OTT: Thats pretty awesome that they can do fun government videos. In Canada or the USA this sort of thing would have such a huge backlash.

#45 Posted by oraknabo (1192 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

@living4theday258: Do you take the church of the Subgenius seriously too?

Speaking of them. I loved that when 1998, their end prophecy year (X-Day), came and nothing happened, they said they made a mistake and saw the prophecy upside down--it was really 8661 and you should still buy their end of the world bumper stickers, just rotate them 180 degrees before sticking them on your car.

#46 Posted by Roger778 (806 posts) - 5 months, 16 days ago

I'm sorry, but I don't believe the world is ending this year. It's just a myth spread by the Mayans.

the mayans never said the world was ending (just that it was the end of a b'aktun, which is cause for celebration rather than doom), so it wasn't even spread by the mayans, it was spread by asshole americans (I think)

It's like how the flushing toilets spin the other way in Australia. The apocalypse will just go the opposite way and it'll be like the Garden of Eden in Australia while the rest of the world is fucked.
