It looks remarkably similar to the very closely related Lord of the Rings movies. Of course, what else would you want? I'm happy to see that they've cast many of the same actors for the Hobbit, though. It would be funny if they had switched things on us.
First trailer for The Hobbit!
That was a pretty good trailer. That dwarven chanting song made it awesome.
Yeah, I'm definitely excited for it!
Was skeptical of this until I watched this trailer. These two movies are going to be awesome. A trip back to Middle Earth, Gandalf, the same amazing art direction and digital effects work, Gollum, Smaug... sorry, got stuck on a tangent there. Very psyched.

Really awesome, thought the dwarves looked a bit comical at first but then the song started and awesomeness began. loved it
See, the first song I remember from the book is about breaking all of Bilbo's stuff during a big feast. The dwarves are traditionally pretty comical, and that's one of the most charming things about The Hobbit. After that part, I thought it got all a bit too serious and grim, but I'm sure that's just a trailer being a trailer. Movie looks fantastic. Encounter between Bilbo and Gollum looks satisfying already.
Also, Martin Freeman does a spot-on Ian Holm impression, which is perhaps the most impressive thing of all.

There's are really quick clip of the dwarves passing plates around the table. So maybe they will sing the song. I hope so.
Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That's what Bilbo hates -
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!
Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!
Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you've finished, if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully! with the plates!
@McGhee: You posting that just triggered a wave of nostalgia so powerful it actually made me openly cry.
Thank you.

Thank you.
That's how I've felt watching the trailer today. It's making me relive all those memories. I think I'll go back and read it again. It's been a few years.
Thorin Oakenshield is way too good looking for a dwarf god damnit.
I'll say the same as I did on Screened, that trailer gives the same kind of feeling of epic and dreadful journey that Lord of the Rings delivered, and that's where my annoyance stems from. The Hobbit as a book was a very whimsical and light hearted one. Just read the song McGhee posted. That's What Bilbo Baggins Hates! The style it was written in befits a children's story much more. While I can understand why this movie is going the direction it is, I can't help but feel a twinge of disappointment at how seriously it's taking itself.
That said, apparently it's going to include the White Council running Sauron out of Dol Guldur. So you know what, fuck it, this is going to be awesome,
I said this in screened but this is giving me the same giddy feeling I felt whenever a new trailer for the next LotR movie came out. When I walked out of Return of the King I was bummed that it was over. So stoked for these!
Looks like another Lord of the Rings movie. Should be good.
I'm still upset Guillermo del Toro didn't end up directing it.
For about the first 30 seconds I was disappointed how much like the Lord of the Rings movies it looked. Then I remembered, hell yeah Lord of the Rings! After watching the rest of the trailer, I no longer have any fears of this movie turning out poorly.
Alright that trailer was pretty good, color me excited, even though I'm still not sure it will live up to the book or trilogy.
Looks fucking incredible.
The part that's kind of selling this for me is the feeling of adventure. Fellowship of the Ring, my personal favourite from the trilogy, just seemed to have that. A grand sense of scope, scale, and joyous adventure. Sadly Two Towers and Return of the King kind of felt a little more restrictive in what they did. The Hobbit feels exactly like Fellowship though. I'm really really looking forward to it. Shame that it's a whole year away, but dammit it'll be worth the wait.
Opinions on Thorin anyone? He looks way too young and is lacking his signature long beard and blue cloak. Peter Jackson is a fine custodian of the fiction, so I guess I shouldn't worry too much. But it was a bit jarring to see Thorin looking so youthful considering his actual age in the source material.
