I just had a tattoo done on my left forearm, and it's beginning to go into the "Burns like hell, starting to heal" mode. The tattooist DEMANDED I use an ointment with A&D, however I've read online that barely any tattoo artists are fond of using this sort of product, as it will eventually scab and lose pigment. (My tattoo is quite colorful)

Does anyone know what the definitive product to use for tattoo aftercare is? I've heard non-scented curell, but then again, I've heard things about how that may dull my tattoo....so basically my options are 1. let it scab with A&D, ruining some of the color or 2. Dull it considerably but with a lesser healing time?

I dont know what you usually use in your country, but here we use something called "Pantothenol" or "Helosan"

I have used both, and they are both good and last for some time.

How long ago did you get it, cause its not supposed to burn or be sore for more than a couple of days or so.

This is my second day with it. Since the tattoo is so color heavy, I'm very worried about the A&D and (Again from what I've read) the possibility of color being taken out during the peeling process and then having to get the thing touched up.

Its normal for it to be a little stingy and burny on the second day. You should maybe to go another shop other than the one you had it done in, and ask what they would recommend to use, or go on a tattoo artist web page and look up the sections about taking care of them.

I have my left arm covered in tattoos, and my right arm is outlined for my biomech tattoo im getting, also have some one my left and right legs. And i have always used the ones i mentioned, also they where recommended by my tattoo artist. That said mine are only black and grey. But my wife has a ton of old school tattoos and they are all in color and she uses the same products, and heres came out good.

The healing and scab period lasts around 2 weeks on my skin. But yeah look up some other artists or go to some sites and have a look at what they use.

My tattoo is very vintage. (I'll get a pic later if I can) Just a last thing, I've heard that the standard for cleaning is anti-bacterial soap and then patted dry with a towel or a paper towel, how often should I do this a day?

See if you can get around to wash it like 2 or 3 times a day. I just use your regular hand soap or whatever you shower in with some water, and rub it on with the hand. And when i dry if off i just use a towel and gently pad it until its dry. Don´t be too afraid to wash it, you don´t have to apply the soap super gently the first week, you wont ruin it, you have to be a little more careful when it starts to scab and peal.

I just washed it for the first time (Neglected to do that after I took it off, big mistake) and there was SOME residue. The tattoo design does seem to be intact completely, but there was some residue, some of which  was colored akin to the shading and coloring of the design. Should I be worried? Or is it normal to expect that during the second day? Also, do you recommend applying the lotion/ointments following the washing?

Are you sure it wasn't a rub-on tattoo you got in a packet of gum or something?

From what I've heard A & D only causes fading if you use too much. The key is to use it sparingly.

Nah your still ok, don´t worry about it. And yes after washing it, apply the lotion after you don, and do this every time you wash it.

Tattoo goo is all you need.  That stuff is all I've ever used, and it was reccommended to me by more than one professional.

Bepanten. Use it well.
It's that nappy rash cream, but it works wonders.

I've always used A&D.  You only lose pigment with it if you layer excessive amounts on it without dobbing it down to a very very VERY thin layer.

Basically, you need to use something that will allow the tattoo to scab over and heal up, so you don't want to use anything like Neosporin or things of that nature.  The reason you use A&D ointment is because it keeps things soft, meaning that the scab won't be a TRUE scab at any point.

Regardless of what you use, you're going to get some fading.  That's just natural with the top layer of skin growing back over the ink.  The real key to keeping a good, bright color to it is two things:
  • The type of ink that was used (many places now use latex-based inks, which are fine but fade quicker and more often)
  • Regular lotion and/or sunblock treatment (if you are going outside and your tattoo will be exposed, put sunblock on it...any other time, use a good aloe lotion)
