Freefall from 36km height - new world record (LIVE).

#1 Posted by ShockD (2187 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

You can watch Felix Baumgartner jump from the height of 36,5km live here.

I'm actually pretty excited since he'll be breaking a world record set by a military pilot in the 60s. It is estimated that during his freefall from the stratosphere he'll reach the speed of max1 and further.

Oh didn't realise they'd already rescheduled it. Thanks for the heads-up.

No no, half-way down he jumps into a lead refrigerator and doesn't die.
#12 Posted by ShockD (2187 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

28km to go. I wonder what's in his head right now.

#13 Posted by villainy (342 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

Don't be silly, that only works if you're trying to survive a nuclear explosion.

...they're not going to set off a nuke as he lands are they?

#19 Posted by ZeForgotten (9487 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago
@thatdutchguy: Yes, it's probably a 50/50 split.
Easier to keep track of peoples messages when there are only 1 million people and not 2 million :P

A long time. He started at 1130 Eastern, it's a 3 hour ascent. He's currently at 46k feet and the target height is 118k feet.

#21 Posted by ShockD (2187 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

Lol, it's -63° C outside. Global warming they say.

#22 Edited by thatdutchguy (461 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

Looks like he's playing cards againts humanity in there.

Here is the official site with all the data on speed, temp, etc. of the capsule.

#25 Posted by Winternet (7337 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

Well, guess this thread was already on (although I did not search General Discussion because, well, it's not really General Discussion material).

Now, how crazy is this? And over 3 million people watching right now.

They should also have ETA of the flight, I hate checking it every 15 minutes.

This guy is going to die, I hope there's a delay to prevent a complete death stream.

So annoying that they cut the conversation when it started to get interesting. I mean, he wasn't or hopefully isn't in serious danger and I would really have liked to hear what they are thinking about the visor problem and if there's anything they could do about it.

Is the stream buffering every second for anyone else?

At least another 45 minutes.

Why do you think so? He has already jumped twice from big heights and survived the supersonic blast.

I thought the whole point of this one is that it's the first supersonic skydive?

The stream is silky smooth for me- just watching on YouTube. I'd much rather listen to mission control than this dude, though.
#33 Posted by Winternet (7337 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

In the midst of all that technology, dude has to have a small mirror to watch his oxy levels.

I thought they had tested it. If this is indeed the first time they're doing this, it is indeed dangerous.

You're right, the old man said that this is the first attempt of a human breaking the sound barrier without an aircraft.

If it turns out just to be a PR stunt for a Call of Duty Red Bull then, yeah, probably!

#42 Posted by Bourbon_Warrior (4525 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

A man is 100,000 feet in the sky, about to jump to earth to break a new world record. At 6am in the morning while streaming it live at 1080p in my bed. Fuck yeah technology!

#43 Posted by Bourbon_Warrior (4525 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

How high is he going?

"Red Bull Stratos is a mission to the edge of space that will try to surpass human limits that have existed for more than 50 years. Supported by a team of experts, Felix Baumgartner will undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to more than 120,000 feet / 36,576 meters and make a record-breaking freefall jump in the attempt to become the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall (an estimated 690 miles / 1,110 kilometers per hour), while delivering valuable data for medical and scientific advancement."

They're aiming at 120,000 feet, but as the dude said, it's possible it will go a bit higher.

#46 Posted by TooWalrus (11818 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

I wish they'd let us listen to mission control, they had one little hitch and cut the feed, haven't put it back up since.

#47 Posted by Hizang (8536 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

Is it me or does the man talking sound like Matt Kessler.

#48 Posted by Baillie (3490 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

Anybody want to hazard a guess what the height is going to be? Me, I'm saying 126,732 feet.

#49 Posted by Winternet (7337 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

123,456 feet it's my educated guess.

#50 Posted by Zaccheus (1359 posts) - 7 months, 8 days ago

I throw out 124,248 feet.
