It doesn't bother me if people pronounce it a certain way, I can just move on knowing they're wrong, but it is very stupid to make the excuse that "graphics" has a hard-g sound, so the 'G' in the acronym "GIF" should make the same sound. There are a lot of acronyms where we don't pronounce the letters with the same sound as the originating words. The one I tend to point out is laser, which originated as an acronym. We don't pronounce the 'a' and 's' the same as the words they stood for, 'e' depends on how you pronounce "emission."

That's not how acronyms work.

Mispronouncing your own Acronym is simply incompetence on the creator's part. There's absolutely no reason why GIF(Graphics Interchange Format) should be pronounced JIF. If the word Graphics were pronounced with a J sound (Juh-ra-fics) and not a hard G sound (Guh-ra-fics) then there would be precedence for the incorrect pronunciation.

I submit though. While I'll continue to pronounce it (G)IF, I will respect those of you who continue to pronounce it (J)IF. Why? Because you stand for something, and that's admirable damnit!

What the hell are you talking about? Tell me how you pronounce the G in this (somewhat comprehensive) list of natively swedish words beginning with "gi-":

gick, gift, giftermål, gikt, gilla, gille, gillra, giltig, gipa, gips, gir, girig, giro, gissa, gissel, gisslan, giva, givakt

Every single one pronounced with a soft G. There are virtually no natively Swedish words beginning with "gi-" pronounced with a hard G. The exceptions are things like "gibbonapa" and "gigawatt" (though plenty of Swedes pronounce that with a soft G as well) which are obvious loan-words.

The way you pronounce an acronym has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with how the words the spelled out are pronounced. Take "laser" for instance, which is an acronym form "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". It's pronounced roughly like /leɪzər/ written phonetically. You'll notice that the "a" is pronounced /eɪ/ ("EY", roughly), which is a diphthong composed of the vowel in "bed" and the vowel in "hit" (diphthong refers to when two vowels are next to each other in the same syllable, like in "proud", for instance). Contrast that with the "a" in "Amplification", which is the single vowel /æ/ (the same vowel as in "hat"), which is an entirely different sound from /eɪ/

In other words, unless you pronounce "laser" as "LASS-er", the argument "It's GIF because of Graphics" carry no weight at all.
