I'll be making the journey down to San Francisco from Seattle on September 19th through the 22nd to watch my beloved Seahawks play the 49ers. I went last year and while the game was awesome(thanks Josh Wilson) I ran out of ideas for things to do in or outside the city. I'll be with my wife and a really good friend so I don't feel like doing to much that takes a ton of time or is out of the way.
I don't like touristy crap and everytime I've gone with my wife I get dragged to the Warf for most of the day. It's just like Pike Place in Seattle, really not into it. I like anything really weird and nerdy, either really awesome/cheap food places or semi expensive resteraunts, just looking for something unique.
I'll have transportation and money isn't really an issue. Also I'll be in Oakland either Monday or Tuesday night for the As game so any suggestions around east bay or helpful as well.
going to San Francisco in September, need ideas
If you want to shop, go to Pier 39. They've got some pretty good restaurants there too and you could watch the sea lions (trust me, they keep you entertained for a long while). Take a drive on the curvy road.
Also, since you'll be in Oakland, see a REAL football game and watch the Raiders ;)
Weird and nerdy and unique, I'd suggest you check out the Exploratorium. It's basically a hands on science meseum, although aimed more at kids (if you have kids, it's a great place to take them). I worked there for a few summers during High School, it's definitely unlike any other place I've been to. Would you like to know more?
It really depends on what you're into.
There are a million great restaurants (check Yelp.com)
The museums are awesome but they can be expensive. My personal faves are the Asian Art Museum and Legion of Honor
If you are into food and are there early on a Saturday, I suggest the Ferry Building Farmer's Market
Union Square is kind of touristy, but I like to go there anyway. There is a pretty good Macy's and Borders.
If you are into wine, head up to Sonoma or Russian River Valley. DON'T go to Napa (trust me).
The Golden Gate Bridge is touristy, but if you are not afraid of heights, I totally suggest walking across.
If you like college campuses, Berkeley and Stanford are both nice and both within an hour drive, although the latter is not really a college town...more like a country club.
There is a ton of hiking in the area, from easy hikes to more strenuous ones. Also, some of the beaches on the Pacific side of the peninsula are nice. Maybe rent a car and drive down route 1.
Go to Haight-Ashbury. It's kind of desolate, but it's interesting and not too touristy.
Definitely go to the Golden Gate Bridge. Walk across it, it's a blast.
That's about all I remember from my four days there. It's a great city to explore, so long as you don't mind the smell of urine.
