@AgentMOO: Yeah that's not a great cover. David Bowie deserves better.
Love that Renegades of Funk cover, that entire album was full of awesome covers. Maggies Farm was badass.

You are SO right about "Always on my Mind". The Pet Shop Boys fucking made that song. But it wasn't originally by Elvis.

Most of the later Elvis songs were covers, and most people would know the song because of Elvis, not the country version by Brenda Lee. The Willie Nelson version is pretty damn fine as well considering my dislike of country as a rule.

It's been mentioned before, but one of the best covers:

And of course the Beatles:

Nirvana also have done a great job at covers:

I will see if I can track it down. Speaking of Willie doing covers at his age reminds me of Johnny Cash and his last album (I assume it was his last. On that, despite his clearly failing health, he did a fantastic cover of Nick Cave's song, The Mercy Seat:

Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat (BoxedSet 2001)

I hope they work, I can't load them to see if they are right.

Foo Fighters did Darling Nikki, which was originally done by Prince. I'd say it's pretty good:

Faith No More's cover of "I Started A Joke"

The Original was by The Bee Gees. Both are very good songs.

@AHakaCGC: I think a lot of people would call what you're doing spam. Or at least pretty annoying cause so far your whole purpose for posting is promoting your 'friend' and digging up ancient threads.

@NipCrip66: "Killing in the Name Of"? It's not a cover if it's the same band/different singer :|

Metallica does covers well, maybe better than their original material.

Marilyn Manson "Sweet Dreams". Annie Lennox should disown the song, she got faced.

Reliant K's cover of Toto's Africa is pretty great.

Evan's Blue did a pretty good job of Possession by Sarah McLachlan.

Tokyo Police Club did an atrocious job of Queen of the Stone Age's Little Sister.

I really enjoyed Fiver Finger Death Punch's Bad Company cover.

I never thought I'd like anything by Five Finger Death Punch but even I must admit they did a Hell of a job with that cover.

"Where is my Mind?" by Pixies has been covered so many times over the years, and thankfully I've yet to find a cover of it that I don't like. There was one made for last year's film Sucker Punch that was absolutely phenomenal. The other was used in Observe and Report, which you might remember as the anti-Paul Blart mall cop movie of a few years ago.

@Rudyftw: Okay, I have a few issues with that Jay-Z "cover." First off, the idea of "quirky indie band covers gangsta rap song" is so fucking tired. We've seen it a thousand times and it's never good. Second, that's not even a cover. They only use the hook. The rest of the lyrics have zero resemblance to the real Jay-Z song.

Anyway, off the top of my head here's a couple covers I like. Not the greatest of all-time by any means but what pop into my head.

EDIT:

How could I forget a couple more from one of my favorite video game soundtracks?
