Good Music Notation/Generation Software?

I'm looking for something along the lines of Ableton Live 8 that also has a note dictation tool as well as being compatible with most MIDI controllers. Any recommendations? Does software like this even exist?

hmnz ... do you mean something with a more traditional notational input for notes and beats, rather than a standard piano roll or step sequencer ? im pretty sure ableton live has a mode for instruments that does that , nothing to spit out sheet music tho ...

youd probably want a midi studio like cubase or logic .. im pretty sure both of those work with some kind of virtual sheet music format.

I personally come from he step sequencer/tracker approach to electronic music , and i never learned to read music notation properly .. so sorta just unsure what you mean in the first place.

did any of that help?

To my knowledge the best notation software would be Sibelius, which I would combine with a DAW like Pro Tools or Ableton or what have you. As for an all-in-one package, I really couldn't say. I don't think that's particularly common.

I haven't been into this sort of stuff in a while, but this was always the case as far as I understood. The software is pretty complex though, be prepared to spend some time learning this stuff, and you'll be able to produce some awesome stuff.
