I think so too. Though, you're probably gonna get a lot of people who say Stair Way to Heaven is better.

John Cafferty - Heart's on Fire

Besides this, everything else is just technical wankery.

I know it's kinda lame, but I've always had a thing for the second guitar solo in Sweet Child O' Mine.

I love how it transitions the song from light to dark.

S'all cool man. Personally, I think the solo from Freebird is equally weak and cliched. :)

"Soothsayer" -- Buckethead

I really love the "Freebird" solo.  I also like the second solo in "Green Grass and High Tides".  Both of those solos grow more and more epic as the song progresses.  There's definitely a sort of nirvana reached if you can immerse yourself into those songs.

For The Love Of God by Steve Vai is one of my favorites, just something about it is just wonderful. The guy is a freakin wizard.

I think anything by Vai deserves a notable mention.  Very, very talented.

This song does it loads better, and for that, is the greatest, not only in solos, but in overall guitar.

This is no snap judgement. I've analyzed this song to great length. It's breathtaking.

ITT boring solos, at least from a guitarists perspective. Minus Vai maybe. Free Bird is terribly repetitive and dragged out.

Santana - Europa (live)

The whole song/solo is very relaxing... takes you away. Also, you have to watch it completely to appreciate it.

@ Metamorphic:

From that Buckethead album, I really liked "Cruel Reality of Nature".  Very subtle, but beautiful.

The final 2 minutes of November Rain.  To me, there's just a point where a solo simply loses its soul and seems like its entirely for the enjoyment of the guitarist.  This includes a lot by Petrucci, Buckethead, and yes, even Vai has been guilty of this.

As an album, I quite prefer Colma.  "Machete" comes to mind.  So does "Whitewash", though.

In my Barnes & Noble, I brought my copy of Colma into the music section so that we could play it in-store while at work (I'm a manager).  I threatened to fire the music employee on duty when she initially refused.

I love to abuse power.

I also choose Freebird. It is like the mother of all guitar solos. Heh, last night I was discussing the guitar solo in Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper with my friend. I won't say it's the greatest ever, and it's kinda on the short side, but it's totally wicked. The Grim Reaper has never had better entrance music than that solo.

LOL she deserved to be fired for not wanting Colma.  I prefer "For Mom", however they're all great songs.

The album seems to have a healing sound to it.  After all it was dedicated to Bucketheads mom (she was sick i think).

Why would someone refuse to play this album???? :|

There's a stigma surrounding Buckethead at my store for no justifiable reason.

Employees seem to think, based solely on the fact that he wears a featureless mask and a bucket, that he plays some breed of death metal exclusively.

Under a Glass Moon is one of my favorites.  It's Dream Theater for those of you who don't know.

The kind of music I listen to doesn't generally have guitar solos, but I think this one is pretty good:

Props to whoever mentioned Comfortably Numb, but it's the Pulse live version that really kills me. Best solo in the history of motherfucking time. And I'm not even that huge of a Floyd fan at all. Just... wow.

Also I think a lot of solo's on Blind Guardian's Imaginations from the Other Side album are pretty awesome. Also Dream Theater's The Spirit Carries On, and Dream Theater in general.

EDIT: Holy shit I just read that Rick Wright died 3 days ago! Gutted. RIP man :(

It really is a hard thing to call. I can never choose between:

Pink Napkins - Frank Zappa

Maggot Brain - Eddie Hazel of Funkadelic

Four on Six - Wes Montgomery

All along the watch tower - Hendrix

Audberge - Chris Rea
