Other than the new Cult of Luna and JT has anything of any real worth even come out?

Anamanaguchi's Endless Fantasy is pretty good. Also Kavinsky's Outrun is fucking brilliant.

Soilwork -The Living Infinite

Kvelertak - Meir

Jim Guthrie - Takes Time

Timo Tolkki's Avalon - The Land Of New Hope/ Avantasia - The Mystery Of Time

@dharmabum: I saw him open up for Pretty Lights in Boston last Halloween. He was great.

So far I'd say my favorite album this year is Yeezus but Pretty Lights just put out an album today and Machine Gun Kelly just dropped his new mixtape and I still need to listen to both. I've heard this new Alice in Chains album is pretty damn good so I need to check that out too.

RAM - Daft Punk

Shaking The Habitual - The Knife

Endless Fantasy - Anamanaguchi

I kinda dug the new Tegan and Sara, and I think this fact makes me a monster.

The new Metric album was this year or last one?

Waiting with all my heart and and soul for Chvrches EP...
As an old AFI fan, I'm kinda curious about their new album, their viral videos make it look like they are going back to a STS and downward era sound. Or at least something darker.

  • LongLiveA$AP
  • Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap

I get the feeling I'm doing something wrong, but I don't get the allure of Acid Rap. I downloaded it, listened to it a couple of times and it hasn't grown on me. Are there any incredible tracks or anything on it? I've seen that much hype for it that I want to like it. I haven't listened to Yeezus yet but Long.Live.A$AP. really did impress me. It's probably my favorite album from the genre so far.

As for my favorite all round album thus far, my answer is going to be OutRun by Kavinsky. The tracks from his EPs are absolutely stellar and while the other new tracks aren't on the same level, they're still very good. Most people seem to have preferred Random Access Memories, but I like Kavinsky's '80s vibe.

  • QOTSA - ...Like Clockwork
  • The Strokes - Comedown Machine
  • Daft Punk - RAM

I'm a big fan of Queens and thought the new album was great. I do like the last two as well, although I don't really get why Daft Punk are so popular. Get Lucky is so annoying after being played constantly on the radio.

@xmp44x: There are a lot of reasons why I really liked Acid Rap. For one, Chance's style and flow is completely unique to him and there's no one else out there who sounds quite like him. And he also strikes what I feel is the perfect balance between creating a fun record and also delivering a record with a message. A lot of the songs on Acid Rap have a very positive, anti-violence message that you don't really hear a lot in rap today and especially out of a Chicago rapper no less. Just a fun mixtape and real breath of fresh air.

Nice, try to see him with his live band if possible. He just added some more tour dates to his schedule in fact.

Threads like these are always among my favorites, because where I live, I don't get exposure to a lot of new music beyond pop or country, and since I'm not really a fan of either, it kinda drives me crazy. Since I'm not familiar with a lot of the bands mentioned, anyone have any recommendations for lighter rock, rap, or the like?

I'm not saying this as a mod, but I'd really love to see these albums and lists broken down into genres. In any case, you guys have recommended some great stuff here.

My album of the year thus far is probably Clutch's 'Earth Rocker'. It's one of the best straight-up no-frills rock records I've ever heard, it's perfectly paced, and there isn't a bad song on it.

There are a few other records from this year that I've enjoyed (Biffy Clyro's 'Opposites', Deep Purple's 'Now What?!', and Steven Wilson's 'The Raven That Refused To Sing And Other Stories' all spring to mind), but so far nothing touches the raw enjoyment this album has brought me.

It's been a year full of disappointments for me (Shapeshifter, Palms, Sigur Ros, Cult of Luna, Dark Tranquillity, Ghost, Puscifer,) but I got Boards of Canada's latest, earlier today. I'm a sucker for good ambient music, I didn't have many expectations for this and it might be because of all the 'meh' albums that came out before it this year but... It's soooo nice! Not in a "Oh my god it's incredible. I've never heard anything like it." kind of way. It's just really pleasant listening.

Simply talking music that's been released in 2013, the only things that comes to mind is the Weapon album by Skinny Puppy and "Came Back Haunted", the single which will be included in NIN's new album later this year. Oh, and The Last of Us's soundtrack was pretty cool.

They should go back to sounding like Back Sails.

Also I didn't even realize the new The Knife album came out yet, need to check it out.

A couple songs from my top album favorites for the year.

#84 Posted by Nev (539 posts) -

Hrm. My list:

Charli XCX - Charli XCX

Daft Punk - R.A.M.

Disclosure - Settle

#85 Posted by YummyTreeSap (304 posts) -

I probably should have kept a list of everything I've listened to from 2013 because damned if I can remember most of it. Especially in the Spotify era where I often listen to an album and forget about it a week later, regardless of whether or not I really dig it. I think I've generally liked this year for music, but damn. Sunbather is definitely pretty great, that's what I've recently been listening to.

Also listened to the new Julianna Barwick album while going for a 2:30 AM walk, which was pretty much a perfect experience.

#86 Posted by ShaggE (6324 posts) -

It just occurred to me that I haven't really been listening to any 2013 stuff at all. A couple of songs here and there, but mostly I've been listening to 2012 and earlier. (doesn't hurt that last year was absolutely awesome release-wise)
