@MariachiMacabre: I don't think he did. He referred to the groups of society that usually own guns in Europe. And that is the 'upper class' who are members of 'hunting clubs' etc. It is the same here in Germany. The 'normal' people simply do not own guns.

What this man said.

What does 'normal' mean in this context? Middle class? Keep in mind that some European countries have very high rates of gun ownership/usage, the Czech Republic for example. Competitive shooting is one of the top three sports in that country, which entirely negates your statement that guns are used only to maim or kill. Can you also elaborate on how guns are 'stupid' or 'retarded'?

@YOU_DIED: I really don't think I need to elaborate.

Also, read "Usually". Owning a gun and being of these divisions are not mutually exclusive.

Take my satement as a broad sweeping generalization that obviously omits outliers. I was also only referring to England. The other guy was not.

I honestly don't have anything against people who own guns either. I just hate guns themselves, same as tobacco. Shoot and smoke all you like, but those things should simply not exist.

well then by that token of things shouldnt exist if they can hurt people and dont serve a real purpose video games, television, radio, all should not exist. some people use guns for entertainment and some people smoke on occassion for relaxing. its none of your damn business first off and you obviously have some issue. did your daddy get shot while smoking?

@tunaburn: Did i say it was any of my business? Again please read what i type, "Shoot and smoke all you like".

In fact my daddy smoked a guy while he was shooting.

I threw a PS1 jewel case at a guy once, it exploded and cut his face up and he died. We should ban all videogames.

And yes, i have a few issues of OXM still lying around somewhere.

Shot a shotgun once when I was a kid. Never really had a desire to after that when it left a rather large bruise on my arm though, even to this day. Have fired an air rifle a few times too, though I guess those aren't exactly "real" guns. Been shot with one of those (air rifle) a few times too, hurt quite a bit afterwards.

Several. As nearest as I can recall, my first experience target shooting was a 22 rifle at about age 7 or so.

Yep. I don't own any myself but my friends own a ton of them.

And people are getting on your case because its not WHAT your opinion is but the way your expressed said opinion. Tone in how you say things changes things drastically. There was a definite derogatory and mocking tone to your initial post. Notice others have expressed their disinterest in guns during the thread yet nobody is calling them out because they weren't aggressively mocking the people who enjoy owning and shooting them for recreational or hunting purposes.

@Demoskinos: Fair enough. People take me way too seriously on these boards. No clue why. I didn't mock anybody, those are merely the people who often own guns in my country.

Guns are still retarded though.

Yes.

5 years in the british army.

I've fired L85A1 all 3 variants + UGL's, GPMG's, LMG's, few different hand guns, M1 Garands, Thompsons, MP5's, AK 47 and 74, M4's, 50 cals, miniguns, mortars, AGL's, posted grenades 1m from face. oh and fired a couple of javelins. Ask me anything.

Firing guns is scary. Hitting your target is hard.

Nothing heavier calibre than a pellet gun. I used to do a lot of archery when I was a teenager but nothing in the way of firearms.

If I felt I needed to have something in the house for self defense, I would most likely just purchase a shotgun. Don't really see a need for that at the moment.

Sure have. Quite a few actually, including a fully automatic Uzi and a Vector (semi-auto, no recoil on that thing AT ALL). I enjoy hunting as well, though, I don't get to go as often as I want to.

Nope, because it makes me uncomfortable, but I want to at least once because it makes me uncomfortable and you never know what might happen. I'd rather not ever be near a gun in my life, but I feel like I should be prepared if something does happen. Probably sounds weird but that's how I feel about it.

I'm English, so no. I can not even think of a circumstance under which I could fire a gun even if I wanted to, which I don't. When Sandy Hook happened, I was one of those assholes shouting about gun control laws. In hindsight, that whole notion was pretty stupid, but I still think guns are terrible and I don't like them.

You know what is cool, though? Fucking swords.

@Canteu: oh so you dont like guns because they can kill someone. ban cars, ban knives, ban axes, ban swords, ban alcohol, ban cigarettes, ban video games because people get to fat and die from being lazy, ban tv for same reason, ban fast food, ban butter, ban sugar, ban ban ban ban ban. how about we just learn to deal with crazies instead of letting them roam the streets.

I own several guns. I enjoy going to the gun range, and some are for home and personal defense.

There is nothing wrong with guns, as long as people are educated and responsible (I know, good luck)...

I've shot a M1 Garand, M1A1 Carbine, 9mm Pistol, and a 12 gauge shotgun. I don't own a gun, but my parents and grandma do. Besides the pistol, I don't mind shooting guns and am rather accurate even compared to my friend is certified in the Navy with a few different rifles. Don't know why people like to argue a lot about them, but it's just a gun. It's not going to hurt anyone unless the person using it wants it to, and at that point it's the person's fault not the guns fault. And I know people who have grown up in the cities their entire lives that have guns, and even friends that are girls that have guns and a concealed carry license so anyone can have a gun not just a certain type of person. To think otherwise is ignorant.

To parents out there who wish to educate their children about the dangers and responsible use of firearms, I think it's a good idea to have them try archery. Archery teaches the basics of projectile weapons safety without having to expose them to something quite so dangerous as a .22 rifle. Sort of the same way teaching a child how to ride a bike is an important step towards eventually teaching them to drive a car.

Normal, everyday, shotguns that is. Not some goddamn 15-round monster that you can buy on every street corner over in the New World.

These are basically my feelings on the subject. I love guns from a scientific perspective, I think they're interesting contraptions and can be enjoyable to use as well. Yet I also think there are far too many irresponsible and dangerous people who own them or have access to them here in the US. It's a tough issue for me, but I've leaned more and more to the side of gun control is recent years.
