Not stuff like Hostel, Halloween or other torture/slashers. Those aren't even scary; they're disgusting and hilarious. I'm talking about psychological stuff like Jacob's Ladder or japanese horror flicks. I want to watch movies that are going to make me shit bricks and curl up on my bed like a fucking little girl. I'm sure there are tons of them movies out there but I don't know where to look. Please help me.
Help me find scary-as-shit movies
I'm not big into scary movies, but I've heard that 'Rosemary's Baby' is scary. I could be wrong. I've also heard the original 'The Omen' is pretty pants-pissingly creepy.
If you want scary dont go with american horror movies. They are about as scary as a simpsons halloween episode.
If you want scary you gotta go Japanese. Like you said Jacobs Ladder is fantastic. Theres this Japanese horror movie that looked pretty good but I'm too much of a pussy to watch it.
It's called Carved.
Plot Synopsis:
Legend holds that 30 years ago, a suburban town was terrorized by the spirit of a woman whose beautiful face had been grotesquely disfigured by a jealous husband. Roaming the streets wearing a long coat and surgical mask, the spirit would approach her young victims and, while removing the mask, ask if she was pretty. The victim's response would almost always lead to their violent death. Now, one by one, children are disappearing again. As teachers and officials desperately begin to investigate, a panic begins to build as the woman's spirit returns for some unfinished business and the town's dark secrets are exposed.
Carved sounds so good! I'll probably get that for myself!
The original exorcist always scares me though.
yeah, you know that movie jessica alba did about the eyes? that was a japanese horror film. i heard it was golden. i dunno about the american version, though.

One movie that really disturbed me, for some reason, was The Mothman Prophecies. Something about it just got to me - maybe because it was halfway believable, not like Freddy in the boiler room or Michael Meyers coming out of the lake or other such nonsense.
"Who is this?"
"This is Indrid Cold."
"Inside" will make you cringe in disgust, scary probably not so much exactly though. It's a french film.
And the movie Omega was talking about, I think I've seen the movie on a shelf before. Dunno, it sounds familiar. The japanese are notorious for making unique, odd, and creepy movies (not to mention downright moronic ones).
Audition is a freaky, freaky movie. That's about the only foreign horror film I'm really familiar with. American cinema-wise, the original Omen is an incredibly freaky movie. Other good 'uns - The Shining, Carnival of Souls, The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead/Dawn of the Dead/Day of the Dead (the originals), 28 Days Later, Poltergeist, the original The Fog, Psycho, Alien/Aliens, The Thing, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Rosemary's Baby.
The mini-series The Stand also still scares the bejesus out of me. Not so much as the book, but still pretty freaky.
Anyone watch Doomsday yet? That had a nice cannibalistic twist. If you want to be scared to the point of lying in the fetal position, you're going to have to find things in real life to do that.
I've also found horror (or horror sci-fi) books to be a lot scarier than movies. Go read David Gerrold's War Against The Chtorr series. He could make Stephen King shit his pants.

It also involves a direct quote.
"Who is this?"
"This is Indrid Cold.""
"What's in my hand?"
"Chhapp Stiiick." (This must be said with the most hyperdramatic raspy voice you can muster.)
Oh, and as a response to the original poster--Mulholland Drive. Check it.
"Was the Blair Witch any good?"I liked it. I'm pretty surprised it took this many years for other horror films to start banking on the same camera style (read: Cloverfield, Quarantine), but I definitely think Blair Witch has been the most effective of that troupe.
"Omega said:The American version isn't that great imo, saw it a few weeks ago..yeah, you know that movie jessica alba did about the eyes? that was a japanese horror film. i heard it was golden. i dunno about the american version, though."

"[.REC]"THIS
and yeh the original Grudge/Grudge2 and Ring or the original Dark Water. But a lot of Asian Horror can be absolutley shit; Whispering Corridors for example.
And also Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Nosferatu, and most German Expressionist horror's are still scary as fuck.
AND
ET. That film fucked my up as a kid and i can't quite bring myself to sit through it again.
" Paranormal ActivityAfter how much I hated Blair Witch I was super surprised at how much I loved Paranormal Activity.
Very creepy.
I hated Paranormal Activity when it was over. During the movie I liked it quite much but I'd never bother to watch that crap again.
Oh right and Blair Witch isn't good, can't recommend to anyone really.
the exorcist is a good one. get some hardcore catholic in the same room with you while watching it. they'll start trembling in fear.
Paranormal activity was kind of entertaining and some parts were funny, I liked the stereotype predictable characters in the film but it was a bit slow at the beginning. I thought it went downhill towards the end, but I don't want to ruin the plot, so all in all, the best part was the drama and It's a fun movie to watch when there're progress in the story, but it's not scary at all.
Same goes to the Ring and its sequels, I watched all of the jp films (if not all, then the 2 different sequels and Zero), but they really fucked up the story by making 2 different sequels with different directions in the story, not to mention not following the original story from the novel. Still worth watching but not scary at all.
I'm glad you asked, cause I made this awesome list over at Screened.com. Recommended by Dave Snider, too. :D
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this but, 28 days later. My favorite horror/psychological/whatever you want to call it movie. Those shots of London completely empty fucking haunt me. Sequel is kinda lame though.
EDIT: Holy Christ, this thread is old.
