Let me start this post with a little pretext. This week has been midterm week for me and as a first year student, I've been freaking out and over studying for every test on the calendar. It was looking at this calendar, however, that I noticed that it's my mom's birthday in two days. I managed to throw together a birthday dinner with the help of my brother but I'm trying to figure out what to get her as a gift?
So here's my challenge:
What can a poor student get his mother in a few days?
What are some pretty good gift ideas that women like?
You're my only hope bombers, it's either you guys or a home made macaroni artwork.
Help me Giant Bomb, I'm a Bad Son.
Don't dismiss the idea of something homemade. Just... try a bit more than macaroni...
Honestly though, it's your mum, and assuming she is basically similar to my mum, a birthday dinner and the understanding that her child is busting his ass at his studies would probably be enough. Get her a bag of classy sweets or something. Shit, last Christmas I got my mum a few boxes of fancy teas.
What kind of birthday dinner are you throwing?
If it has any effort put into it (ordering pizza and blowing up a few balloons doesnt count) then that's a good enough gift.
I don't know, man. You know your mom better than any of us do (inb4 your mom jokes). Talk to your brother and do some brainstorming with him. Good luck, and I hope she has a very happy birthday!
Yea, dinner and a card will be more than enough. If you can afford it, buy a picture frame and a pic of you guys.
Your definition of bad and my definition of bad are totally different.
As for a gift - a hug usually goes a long way, and you're already getting a dinner going for her, and you're a college student, you're already well on your way to giving her a good birthday. I mean, unless she's mean and really over-expecting of you and so on and so forth. Home made stuff is good though, on a budget, and jewelry can be good too if she likes jewelry, but you may have to know her preferences for jewelry before buying or making any for her. A home made card could be good too. Either way though, cut yourself some slack, sounds like you're being pretty hard on yourself.
You could get her flowers, or a nice house plant. Maybe check in her bathroom and see if there is any perfume or skin care stuff she is running low on. Or if your budget is really bleak get her a photo album and print off some pictures. I'm sure she would just be happy with her dinner and having her family with her.
Give her a "get out of jail free" card of sorts meaning create a card that guarantees your time to do something for her at her choosing provided it's not midterms or finals week. If she needs help with some handy/house work, a trip to where ever, someone to taxi a sibling around freeing up her time for something else, etc... it's up to her to decide. Sure, as a "good son" you should be available anyway, but we all know that parents understand what their children are willing and unwilling to do on occasion. This removes those limitations. Sure, its a cheap gift but if you think of it as time and labor, then its still a worthwhile gift.
Get her a grandchild. If you had 9 months I would suggest getting a girl pregers, but since it's on short notices might I recommend buying a child from a poor family? Being a college kid and all you gotta remember to save where you can, so I recommend China. It has an over supply of them, so you can get them rather cheap. Heck, some places are just giving them away.
" Thought this said, "I am Brad's Son". "Oh if it were... wait! I'M BRAD'S SON!!!!!!!!!!!
Um, it really depends on the mother. My mother hates store cards. If you didn't make the card yourself, she won't accept it. She also hates gifts of makeup and stuff.
Women tend to like jewellery. If you know your mother likes jewellery, then you can get some cheap jewellery for her. I got my mother a $50 bracelet once, and she liked it (or at least, that's what she told me). Does your mother like to read? Get her a book. Does she like statues and stuff? Go to the local Oxfam shop and buy some nicknack's for her.
The most important thing you can do is spend time with her, help her and listen to her. Since you're a student with mid-terms, you might be short on time, but you should at least spend a couple of hours talking to her. In my experience, mother's really like it. Take her out to a park, or just discuss what's going on in her life or try to find what she's really interested in, and chances are she'll be happy.

For example: my dad is kind of a hardass. He's hyper critical of things like christmas and birthdays (but he plays a long anyways and usually has a good time). He's also incredibly "meh" when it comes to presents and gifts. If me or my brother buy him a shirt or whatever he'll wear it, but I imagine it's because it came from one of his son's. From other people though, he literally wouldn't touch the things. So one year I decided to do something a little different, and that was to blow up a tiny black and white picture of him from when he was 10 years old. It's the only picture my mom had of him when he was that young (they're both from India) so I went for it. I got brought up to standard picture size, got it all cleaned up and put it in a frame. HE LOVED THAT SHIT. Like honestly I've never seen his face light up like that from a gift. So yeah, think of something like that, it's easier and it's more effective.
Thanks for the responses all,
Together me and my brother have pitched together about 100$ to buy her something along with taking her out to dinner at her favorite restaurant.
I'd go with the usual easy money of jewelry or clothes but i already busted those out at christmas, and I don't like gift cards.
@RsistncE: I'll look around for a good photo, I know we have a huge box of them from where my mom used to live, thanks.
@Spiral_Stars: My Mother's a saint, she doesn't believe in enemies.
As long as she knows that you couldn't really get her too much, and you do well on the tests, she probably won't really care. But macaroni artwork never hurts anything...
" @fwylo: See, you'd think it'd be easy, but my Dad spoils her silly. She has everything! "Haha fair enough. Well if she does have everything. Maybe it is the little things she's missing out on. Birthday doesn't have to be about an awesome gift, because the best gift she could have is knowing her son loves her.
If that's what defines a bad son then I am the best son in the world no matter what people might say o.O
" Thought this said, "I am Brad's Son". "It's the kid from American Idol!!
But seriously, it's the thought that counts. That's most true when it comes to moms. Just do your best to think of something.

I have one and it's professional looking, unlike most "gaming" cases. I hear women really like video games...
Make something, it works every time. If you are really low on money and supplies, you can easily make origami flowers out of Post Its, which is great because they come in all sorts of crazy colors.
Now if you excuse me, I am going to go do some push-ups and spit.
