Help me remember an anime movie....

I don't really like anime, but back in the late 90's I caught a couple minutes of the ending of an anime movie and I remember it being really awesome. It's stayed in the back of my head ever since. It was on the Sci-Fi channel, and it seemed like it was dead serious in tone, although not melodramatic or hilariously serious. There was a space battle going on, and the ships looked like something from Alien or the original Star Wars trilogy. The art style was more like a Ghost in the Shell as opposed to more cartoony and exaggerated stuff. The film was desaturated with heavy contrast to the point of being almost black and white. The characters wore space suits that kinda looked like Raiden's suit in Metal Gear Rising. Things weren't going well, and I think everyone might have died...? Maybe not. Anyways, I remember it was visually resplendent and kinda blew me away, although I was just a kid at the time so who knows. Finding out what movie I saw is probably totally futile with details as sparse as mine, but I figured asking can't hurt.

I think it was probably Lensman. It's really the only one that fits, from your description. If it weren't for the Raiden-like suits, I would say it was the last episode of Gunbuster, but they never aired that on the Sci-Fi Channel.

@FengShuiGod: Parts (but not all) of what you describe remind me of End of Evangelion? That movie kinda sucked though.

Sounds a lot like Pokemon 2000 to me

There's no space battles in that movie, and it's a great film.

Lensman crossed my mind as I was reading his message, but I really doubt it. That's a pretty colorful movie. Good one, though. Doesn't get enough credit.

That movie was excellent. Especially if you compare it to the piece of shit original ending to the Series.

My best guess is Armitage III Dual Matrix. It fits the Ghost In the Shell-like animation style you mention plus it has similar themes. Check out this AMV someone made with clips from the movie (disregard the song, of course) to see if it looks familiar. I don't remember any Star Wars styled battles though. They aired it a lot on Sci-Fi back then.
