Homeland discussion thread (Spoilers)

With the second season of the show starting tonight, and since I can't find a discussion page I figured why not create one. If you want to feel free to post all of your impressions, theories and the like go for it. If your living overseas (like me) here is a list of channels and times it's being broadcast on and how far behind they are.

  • Canada - Super Channel 10:00 ET (Same Day)
  • New Zealand - TV3 Monday 8:30 (Same Day)
  • UK - Channel 4 Sunday 9:00 (6 days behind)

There are a lot of gaps there but i'll fill them in as I figure them out

I don't love the show as much as some people do (probably because part of me just wishes Rubicon was still on the air) but they manage to do a couple things really well that make it worth watching. Claire Danes is great at being one step away from losing it, they make Brody really sympathetic despite what he's doing, and Brody's daughter is the best fucking teenage character I've ever seen on TV or movies. Seriously, she's moody and sullen almost all time, but she has never once been annoying and you always totally understand why she's acting the way she is. Fucking perfect casting.

Premiere was good, although how Brody is already a possible VP candidate I have no idea. Stunt casting or not, he's only been a politician for a year tops, which is not a good idea under any circumstances. I think that was my only real problem with the episode though. Well, that and the terrorist journalist, which is just dumb.

I just finished watching episode 2 and ho, lee, fuck. I was expecting that little bugger to come up way later in the season.

OK. Episode 5 was really good. Tense stuff. Great acting too.

Is this just a showtime version of JAG? I don't know, I have never heard of this before.

Just.. No.

Ok Episode 5 had to be the best episode of the series yet, that was amazing. The acting on that show is just amazing.

I'm thinking there'll be some double agent stuff soon. I just really doubt that he fell for the interrogation trickery. He seemed to give up too easily, as he probably just wanted to get out, but with no true intention of fully cooperating with the CIA he might have bought time to make another plan.

That is kind of the thing with this show right now is it really can go any were at this point.

@Funkydupe: That's what I'm thinking. I don't feel like that changed anything for Brody.

@Dagbiker: Not at all. this is just one continuous story with spies and terrorists, and lots of cat-and-mouse type stuff, sorta like Dexter in a way. (If you're thinking of watching it, don't read anything about it. Very easy to have stuff spoiled)

Yep. Another great episode, quality thriller stuff. Good episodes always leave you wanting more. Not quite sure how this'll move from here.

Well. Fuck.

It was obvious they were going to do something, and you spend the whole episode waiting for that something to happen, and then...

Fuck.

Great season finale. Especially the part with the whole family seeing the video.

Not a huge fan of this show or the hype it's been receiving. It's not bad, I just think it's overrated and that Sleeper Cell (2005) did a better job with similar story beats and a smaller budget.

Personally, I hate the way the writers aren't ballsy enough to commit to anything, whether it's the offing of major characters or throwing a curve ball à la Breaking Bad. Things always feel relatively safe throughout both seasons, no matter how close Brody got to the VP. Let's face it, everyone killed by that car bomb was disposable. Estes' story loop was closed and the rest in attendance were throwaway characters at best. Also, real convenient how Brody signalled Carrie to leave at just the right time. If Brody is still part of a bigger plan, commit to it for fuck sake! Don't leave it wide open until next year when you're back at the writer's table.

Abu Nazir, never once have I been afraid of him or his "master plan". 24's bad guys showed much more menace and determination, no one was safe (bar Jack). Hell, Jack's wife even got it in Season 1.

With about a third to go, I thought they could have redeemed that finale by revealing that Brody was still on-board with terrorists, or that Saul was pulling the strings that triggered that car bomb and was a double agent. Or I guess, perhaps the new president caught wind of Estes, Brody and Carrie's loose ends and decided to kill them all off and frame it on Brody - killing three birds with one stone, so to speak. But, I suppose that still leaves Saul...

Anyways, not a fan of leaving it so open like that until next season, makes me feel as if they'll write it around the reaction and the message boards come next year.
