I think I'm a bit unusual because I organize them by studio, then chronologically, but series stay together with the first one.
How do you organize your DVD/Blu-Ray Collection?
My two dvd shelves are split into TV shows and Movies.
The dvds themselves are organised alphabetically, it just makes it easy to find what I want
The ones I watch the most are at the front of the collection, then the ones are don't watch much are at the end.
speaking of which, does anyone know of a program, preferrably free, that catalogues your movie collection and can retrive movie info by entering the bar code?
Alphabetical then with any overlaps like Crash where I have 2 of the same name, I put those in chronological order.

Hmm.. I haven't bought a shelf yet so they are sitting in a stack beside my games. I keep each game /dvd/bluray stack seperate though. Games being split into console. My sort order is: Most recent on top. Because i'm lazy and im not organizing stacks of stuff.
Also if they are organzied from shit to best, why are you buying shit movies? That makes no sense! I bet you like fishdicks!
I don't really organize them. But I keep the movies I like within view so if I ever feel like watching something I don't have to go and dig anything out. I do keep sequels together though.
I have all my TV-series and boxes in one place but the rest of my movies are not that well organized.
When I first set up my shelf I tried to organize them by genre so I'd have all my war movies next to each other and all my mafia movies in one place, and so on...but since I keep buying more DVDs all the time I've gotten lazy with that. I also need to find some better shelves to put them on before I re-organize them.
I've filled my cabinets but can't stop buying, so now I balance them into stacks on the floor..

I sort them from awesome to not awesome because the bottom half of my dvd rack is really hard to reach.
movies are just kept together if there the same series or director, but other than that its where it fits. TV series and music dvd's are on a seperate shelf and thats as deep as it gets. My music on the other hand is all over the place, like 'progessive' music together, old psycadelic together, singer songwriter, etc, although some areas I put albums with producer and bands with members involved, like having it go roxy music, than brian eno, than talking heads because he produced them and was practically a member for their best album, or having nazz, than todd rundgren, than XTC because he produced skylarking, one of my favorite albums ever, than meat loaf since he produced and played on it, etc
I hardly have any DVD's, my 360 and Wii games however are in order of when I bought them, though I'm considering doing them in alphabetical order, with like 10-15 games it wasn't a big deal and it made it quite easy, but as i got like 65 games now it becomes a bit annoying.
Everything is either on a shelf, in a cardboard box or in a cardboard box on a shelf. Now as to how they are organized after that, well, usually by genre and franchise. All anime in one area, all western animation in another, all superhero, all sci-fi, etc... I don't bother with the alphabetizing once they are assigned a genre box. There are a few out of place DVDs, though. I keep my Futurama discs right up front because I watch them often. And whatever I plan on watching fairly soon, I keep off to the side.
Netflix movies are kept next to my PS3.
Mine collection has no organization, yet. But I usually have a place for newer movies. Also, I don't have a Blu-Ray player, therefore I have no Blu-Ray movies. :(
Series' in one shoe box (LOTR, Star Wars, Bourne, etc.), single DVDs in another. Hurray for shoe boxes?
I organize by whether its a game or a movie. I keep the bluerays and dvds together and the videogames together
