No matter how far we advance, no matter what we do, in the end none of it will matter, and everything that has ever existed will cease to exist as the universe collapses in on itself.

How does it feel to know the universe will cease to exist?
God: I'm sorry, but its just not gonna work out between us baby.
Universe: Is it me, is it something i did?
God: No,no baby, its not you its me.
Universe: WHY WON'T YOU LOVE ME???!?!?!?!
makes me feel like I need to get shit done quick, have a bad-ass legacy that will last until the end of time, like Joseph Stalin....
OP sounds like a dick.
Anyway, we don't know shit about most of everything. For all we know the universe could go on forever, or all the planets could turn into giant dongs.
Haha, I love the theories on that site about the future. They're saying I'm gonna be seeing actual A.I.s in my lifetime, I'm very excited about that :PAlso, possibly faster-than-light travel.

It's expanding still but the rate at which it's expanding is slowing, indicating it will eventually reverse direction and collapse in on itself, if that makes sense.
But who cares bro, I have enough trouble thinking about an hour in the future, let alone billions of years.
i thought the theory now was that the universe would simply keep expanding foreverIt will keep expanding, but it will be dead.

Imagine living on the head of penis planet as it enters the galactic vagina.... That would be something.@davissc9 said:
Well, if it does go the other direction and retract, wouldn't we be right back where we were, with planets again forming?@winsol said:

Who the heck knows, either it would cause another Big Bang or everything would just cease to exist I suppose, Probably the former. Either way we'd be looooong gone so doesn't matter to me.
The Universe is getting bigger, how can it "collapse in on itself?" And seriously, getting emo about the end of the universe is ridiculous. You and everyone you know will be dead long before then. Hell, our sun will burn out LONG before the universe does anything.I just think it's funny. Humanity is sitting here pondering shit that it will never, ever understand, while not really trying to solve its real problems. Ours is an interesting species.

You mean like how we continue to destroy are planet, yet argue about things that are ultimately insignificant?
I don't see the issue here

You know, the one thing I hate is when someone says how we dare question the universe as we ignore the current problems. You folks do know that their are people out their that are handling issues on hunger, poverty, aides and cancer all over the world. Their are also DIFFERENT people taking a long look into the sky and positing our place i space and time.
My biggest annoyance I've seen since I started college.

Actually its pretty simple to understand, solving real problem is hard, ungrateful work. Pondering things that noone else can understand and therefore correct, can be done in a nice air conditioned office at a college where you can't be fired (with tenure) and only grad students to bother you.
In either case if you can deal with your own mortality then dealing with the death of the universe billions of year in the future is kind of trivial.
Why do people insist on talking about subjects they have no clue about, then stating their opinions as if they were factual truths. I like how astrophysicists debate this subject from multiple perspectives from infinite growth, reverse expansion, a cyclical system fueled by dimensional collision, and none of them can agree on multiple truths yet alone a single idea. Yet our local genius unsurpassed for the next googolplex amount of years, can solely determine the fate of a state he knows nothing about. How does it feel knowing your mind will never be able to comprehend its own stupidity?
AD 7989 - The first explorers venture through the wormhole. Mass colonization begins soon after.

Never said people weren't working on it, you must have misunderstood my point. Listen my friend, I'm saying for as many people as there are out in the world doing good, there are just as many doing bad. Example, it isn't unheard of for a company to ignore moral/environmental concerns in order to preserve their bottom line. Since I started college three years ago I've been annoyed with people who's opinion seems to be that of contentment. The only way to progress as a society is to always demand more in terms of awareness, motivation, morals, etc. I'm sure some people are complaining for the sake of it, but you can't deny the fact that there are plenty of things we, as a society are doing wrong, and could improve upon. More people sharing that belief would only serve to move us in a better direction. Ya dig?
If you actually read through some of those article like write-ups, they're actually quite fascinating. If a mite far-fetched. Still quite interesting though.

Except that people cannot agree on what the problems are, much less how to solve them. For example for millions of people a major concern is the loss of "family values" by people who *gasp* have sex outside marriage, schools teaching that the earth is older than 6,000 years and youngsters play "murder simulators" or "digital pornography". just as well that most people prefer to just stay out of it, in my opinion there is noone more dangerous than someone who has the "Truth"

Agreed, my post was meant to be in a perfect world where everybody saw the most sensible solutions. And yes the most dangerous, or rather the most regressive people, are those that believe what they say is gospel, and are unable to accept change or criticism. *sigh* it is what it is
It's just one of those things that if you think long & hard about it, you will just drive yourself insane as there is no credible answer until you hit that point in time & then poof, too late to worry any more about it. Better to focus on the smaller things like how much time during a year if added up is spent sleeping, wtf dogs are actually trying to say, how to convince tea drinking countries like India to switch to coffee, ect.
Go read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy & have some damn fun instead of putting thought to the end of the universe.
...well better piss my name in some snow and story it on pluto...my legacy will carry on and all will know me!
...also...if you ask me..we don't know a thing about the universe we like to keep telling ourselves that but for all me know we are blood cells inside a giant brain or something idk and idc =D
Back in elementary school when I first learned that eventually the Sun would explode, I freaked out for like a week. Had nightmares of it happening.
But now, in about 70 years, I'll be dead. The end of the universe in trillions of years doesn't bother me at all.
Usually big, far-reaching concepts like this just end up giving me a headache when I try to think about how unimaginably big the universe is. It's never long before I'm inflicting myself the Total Perspective Vortex. By the time I get to thinking about mortality, and I remember I'll be gone loooong before the Sun explodes and Earth is gone, much less the end of the universe, I'm already deep into nihilist territory.
