Hey y'all. At the risk of breaking the illusion, and driving you all insane with our banjo loop, I thought I'd give some insight into what it takes to edit a typical segment of I Love Mondays, from start to finish. So, in the immortal words of Jonesy, "here it is... at ten times speed."

Crazy stuff. Whenever I go to edit some simple video I always underestimate how much work it takes as I never seem to remember how much work it was last time.

You guys should do some tutorial videos for tested on how to do some of the video editing tricks you guys use.

EDIT: OMG! That part where you used the mask layer in photoshop as a gradient invisible overlay just blew my mind! I had been trying to use a similar effect recently and for the life of me I couldn't think of how I used to do it! Thank you!

Drew, your efforts do not go unnoticed.  Thanks for all that you do which makes Giant Bomb great (and by that I mean everything you do)!

Your patience is admirable!

Oh, cool. Thanks Drew!

#16 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19307 posts) -

It seems I've underestimated the amount of work it takes to make a video like that.  That looks complicated as hell.

#17 Posted by Lukeweizer (2607 posts) -

Very cool, Drew!

So if this is x10 speed, does that it took you over an hour to edit a 2 minute 30 second video? That's crazy.

interesting

i thought vinny was the video man ?

#19 Posted by Milkman (16519 posts) -

Wow, that seems like a lot of work for a 2 minute video.

#20 Posted by Baillie (4032 posts) -

That's really pretty cool.

#21 Posted by MattyFTM (14341 posts) -

So, how long did this actually take you to do?

That was pretty damn awesome! Now if only I could do that as well...

Love seeing videos like this. Thanks for posting this Drew.

#24 Posted by Googly (245 posts) -

Yet another reason to love Mondays!

#25 Posted by Sneakybadger (224 posts) -

id like to think that's the speed drew actually works at.

#26 Posted by jelekeloy (456 posts) -

Just when I thought it would be cool to be a video producer...

#27 Posted by Finstern (639 posts) -

Really cool video, especially as a video editing enthusiast.

#28 Posted by Video_Game_King (35985 posts) -

Wait, how could you end this video without showing us the final product? That's like watching one of those How It's Made episodes, but never seeing somebody using the product du jour.

#29 Posted by PresidentOfJellybeans (300 posts) -

Had no idea making a video was so complicated!  Awesome!

#30 Posted by WalkerTR77 (1352 posts) -

Very cool, props Drew!

You've got to save something! Watch I Love Mondays and you'll see the final product!

Cool behind the scenes look at how these videos are made. Way more goes into them then I thought. That would take me all day to make that 1 video and you knock it out in an hour.
#33 Posted by Azteck (7449 posts) -

The speed at which you do this is, and excuse my language, goddamn insane. And with such great results. Keep 'em coming, Drew. You do a fantastic job.

#34 Posted by gakon (1945 posts) -

I hope I can find a job like yours (bonus if it's in an environment like Whiskey's) when I'm out of college.

#35 Posted by Video_Game_King (35985 posts) -
@Scooper:

I just finished, but am still confused as to why it isn't on the front page.

As someone who has dabbled in video editing before, I can tell you that it's always more work than it appears to be. Even a 30-second video (depending, of course, on its content) is probably going to be complicated enough to create to make the average casual viewer's head spin. Always appreciate the video editors. So much of the "magic" of a video can be attributed to them. (See any of the past few Thursday Night Throwdowns for an example.)
#37 Posted by Hamz (6846 posts) -

Great work, it's neat to see how this sort of stuff gets done.

Mad props to the video editing team for their work over the last few weeks. TNTs are as fun to watch for the games as they are seeing the control room go bananas.

#38 Posted by august (3826 posts) -

Awesome.

#39 Posted by damswedon (3174 posts) -

Nope shouldn't of watched it the mask has been lifted.

#40 Posted by random_guy23 (256 posts) -

Awesome! final cut pro and soundtrack pro! nice job drew. I want to start a career in video editing, got any advice for me?

#41 Posted by DeathbyYeti (742 posts) -

I dont know why but I love the slaving away at video editing. I just get lost editing sometimes but not professionally obviously

#42 Edited by Mitsune (28 posts) -

That was awesome.

One question though: what is the average running time of putting an I Love Mondays video altogether?

#43 Posted by mattjam3000 (434 posts) -

I have even more respect for what Drew and Vinny do now, if that was possible

#44 Posted by JJOR64 (18906 posts) -

Glad you put a lot of work into them every week.  Thanks for making Mondays awesome.          :)

#45 Posted by DeadFish (228 posts) -

Wow, that's awesome! It makes a lot of sense now, but I totally didn't notice how much editing goes into the ILM videos!

#46 Posted by Hermie (42 posts) -

Great video Drew! Is FCP your editing software of choice, or just the office standard? What if you don't have access to a high-end Mac? (Been looking for something to replace Premiere)

#47 Posted by Death_Unicorn (2838 posts) -

This was really interesting. So does the total time round up to about half an hour?

#48 Posted by Mercanis (660 posts) -

Now I have a greater appreciation -- and a greater love -- for I Love Mondays.

#49 Posted by jennoa (89 posts) -

That was amazing.  I new making video was complicated, but the sher effort involved astounds me.  Bravo Drew!

#50 Posted by ShadowVirus (793 posts) -

That was great, very insightfully. Would love to see more like this, you're the best Drew.
The most best.
