What does this say about me??
I still like him, but personally, I feel like he's, for lack of a better word, struggling to "still be Eminem" in an age where all people care about is punchlines and singles. I'm not trying to be all like "hip hop is dead" and blah blah blah because there's still a lot of great motherfuckin artists out there, but there are infinitely more terrible. dumb artists and they're the ones getting most of the radio space, Youtube views, and coverage in general.
Pretty tired of both his yelling flow he has now and his continued "I'm not afraid"/"underdog" lyrics... dude you are Eminem these songs are dumb and boring and you're not an underdog or taking a stand against anything. I liked him more when he was fun... maybe he's going back to that but the new single was bad.
But then again I'm a guy who thinks his best work is Infinite so take my opinion in the minority it probably is.
This is so awesome (mainly because I hate this song)
I still like Eminem quite a bit. I thought that last Bat Meets Evil album was pretty good.
This is true. Royce really brought the fun out of him in a way he hasn't had in a while... Royce is a great rapper.
This song is particularly great I think:
Been down on Eminem since Encore after listening to MM LP and Eminem Show non-stop. Didn't like his goofier stuff much and on Recovery there were like three songs w/ Michael J Fox jokes..for whatever reason it just "rubbed me wrong" (said in Mike from Breaking Bad's world-weary voice) and I haven't listened to him much since. But..was going through my song list the other day and "Kill You" came up, and it made me want to get back int Em.
People don't like Eminem? Would never have guessed that from his record sales. He is the only hip hop artist that I can stand listing to.
Tons of people vocally hate Jusin Beiber and Lil Wayne online (check the comments of basically any 90's hip hop song on youtube) yet both sell buttloads. So make of that what you will. Vocal minority.
Those first three LPs were great, but they are also kind of records of their time. I dunno. Some albums are timeless no matter what the year, but some albums I listen to less and less as time goes on. It doesn't help that his last few albums weren't that great, either, in my opinion.
I always associated Eminem with TRL/Carson Daly, Limp Bizkit, boy bands, and female pop stars of the time. Maybe that's why? I know hip-hop has always been about name-dropping, but it's weird listening to a song where he's rapping about Fred Durst and Carson Daly, making Tom Green references, or his beef with Moby from ten years ago. Even serious songs like "Cleanin' Out My Closet" sound lame after the fact.
Maybe I'm just too old now?
Like what you like.
I respect what he did, and he dropped 2 classic albums (arguably 3) but he can't even keep up with royce anymore, i mean royce is one of the best writers in the game but eminem used to make him sound average.
if he wasn't eminem, i don't think he would sell records at all anymore, let alone at the level he does. Can't hate on him though, he still dropped one of my favorite albums of all time.
As for his newer stuff, I liked Relapse. There were a few stinkers, but for the most part it was good. Everything on Recovery sounded so over-produced and boring. The "Despicable" freestyle that came out pre-release was fucking dope though.
I want to be optimistic about MMEP2, but I don't know. Berzerk is just alright, and Survival sounds like a bad mashup with some joan jett song. The singles from Relapse weren't my favorites either, so I guess I'll have to wait and see.
He'll never match the genius of Marshall Mathers LP again unless an absolute miracle happens, but he's still one of the greatest rappers out there. Even the much-hated Relapse had its share of great tracks. (and Encore was much worse, at that... yet even that album knocked out some bangers)
Also, Recovery was a great album. I'm not sure why it's so maligned. Yeah, it's a departure and a little bit too navel-gazey, but his delivery is incredible. I just wish he could tap back into that genuine anger and sincerity that made MMLP so amazing. He feeds off of controversy, and nobody's (publicly) offended by him anymore.
He's my favorite rapper ever and MMLP is my favorite album of all time but his last two singles (the stupid call of duty song and Berzerk) have been awful. I respect the fact that on Recovery he admitted Encore and Relapse weren't his best work, but I think he might've taken fans' requests to return to his old style a bit too seriously. A 40 year old with his hair dyed blonde making fun of celebrities is just kinda desperate at this point. I'm still gonna give the album a fair shake but I'm really not getting my hopes up for it. Honestly, the new Hopsin album is probably gonna sound more like Eminem than the new Eminem album will. Still, MMLP2 will probably be better than those piece of shit D12 mixtapes without Em that dropped a few years ago. God those were fucking terrible.
This song goes hard as fuck. It just sucks that they wasted such dope verses and a dope beat on such a shitty hook that just comes off as out of place. It's just Em and Royce rapping their asses off and then out of nowhere some bitch is whining about poverty.
It's funny, I very much still like Em,still love his 1st 2 albums to death, but I've also noticed that he has reached that status where noone really shit talks him, like Dre or Snoop (cept when he does kooky shit like hot pockets ads). I guess it's a testament to the quality of his work. Even 8 Mile isn't shit on, most just say it was alright and move on.
