I would like some advice...

So, I have within the past month, I have gotten into playing Yugioh cards with my friends... Hear me out, it's fun. OK, anyway I kinda don't know what to do. I have spent $80 in the past week buying cards and have gotten some good ones for my deck, but my deck is mostly old cards and it is impossible to win against new decks since there are now new monsters called XYZ and Synchro. It changes everything and pretty much makes old monsters pretty much useless. My friends don't have a good deck with the new types of monsters so we got wrecked at a local tournament last Sunday. Now I don't know what to do. I like playing but I would need to spend upwards to $200 buying a competent competitive deck. But we are all leaving for college in the coming up weeks so I don't know when I will get the chance to use them. What if we are done by Spring break or Summer. Plus, the local tournaments are fairly far away (45 mins driving) so it can't be a weekly thing. I can still play online without buying new cards, but I do like that feeling of getting new cards and just having something to show. Let me know what you guys think I should do.

Edit: Thanks for the advice everyone! I will not buy this huge investment. I will try to not get some cards when I go to a store. Thankfully, I can play online for free, which works out the best since I can still play with my friends when we all are gone.

That shit right there is why Yugioh sucks ass. It bounces in and out of trends with its cards. I remember back when Fusion was the hot shit then the toons because of the cartoon. Play a real game, go get a Magic deck.

If its something you have a honest interest in and its not going to cause money problems go for it, i used to dabble with that way back when it first came out and though it was neat but never got real into it. Just also make sure its going to be a lasting hobby if your going to drop that kind of dough. Also i dont know anything about them now so i cant say how often they release new packs but wouldn't it be better to buy your cards when your going actually use them just in case they come out with new ones?

I still have my originals, If i were to get into playing Today i'd play only against originals. I dont understand the new ones and dont have a interest.

Stop.

Now.

Unless you have an obscene amount of money and are A-OK with dropping $200 on something you most likely won't care about in a few months. Honestly, is that $200 really worth it? What else could you spend it on? Gas for a car? Some food? A good Friday evening out with your friends? A girl?

If you must, a good rule of thumb when spending more than $50 on something so frivolous is dwell on it for at least a week. Yes, a week, no matter the time constraints you might have (especially consider the time constraints you might have). If you still want it after that week, then chances are you're going to get at least some use out of it, even if it isn't $200 worth.

If you have the money for it, then go ahead and buy them. The only thing I can see not going well is that you might not to get to use the cards anymore if you are too busy with college.

@believer258: Kind of a odd opinion, if hes genuinely interested in this and sticks with it why is this any different then what we all blow on games here. 200 bucks is alot to blow on some cards, i agree but its fine if he truly thinks there not going to collect dust in a month. I dont see the issue.

Just imagine the nerd armpit smell of those shops and tournaments. Now throw those cards away and move on to a brighter future.

But few of us blow more than $60 on a whim (or whatever the standard price of new games is in your country) on video games and no one blows the equivalent of $200 USD (presuming USD here) on a video game on a whim because they don't cost that much, unless you're insane or have an obscene amount of money.

Have I blown money on games before? Yeah. But most of the time it's never more than $30, and even then I feel pretty bad about it afterwards. $200 is a whole lot of money that can be used for a whole lot of things, I don't see how "Stop before your wallet is empty on this hobby you only just now got into" can be bad advice considering what he wants to drop on it.

Also, college. Restraining your frivolous spending is a skill you'll learn real quick in college, unless Mom and Pop drip feed you money.

EDIT: I'm not saying not to spend that much money on something that you know you're going to enjoy for a long time. I'm saying, don't spend that much money on something you only just now got into.

Don't do it! You've activated their trap card!

@believer258: You do make a good point. I think if it comes around to be summer and everyone is still in it then it might be worth the investment then. Plus, the cards could be cheaper. And it is upward to $200, idk how much it would exactly be but I asked the owner of the card shop and he said there is a bulk purchase rate. But i do agree with you. Give it some time.

Literally just walked into my little brothers room and asked him why he quit, his answer "Too expensive".

I've played Yu-Gi-Oh and still do to some extent, and this is the biggest problem with it and many other collectible/competitive games like it, that staying up to speed in a competitive context requires spending silly amounts of money. This can be a dark road to go down and probably not a very advisable one, even if you get the cards you want now, they're going to just come out with a bunch more powerful and desirable cards in the future which you'll need to buy if you want to have the edge in tournaments, because above all else Konami want people to keep giving them money. Unless you're really committed to this (which you don't seem to be), I think there are much better ways to spend your $200.

I wouldn't. I liked Yu-Gi-Oh when I was a kid but it kinda dropped in and out for me until the 5th grade when I dropped it completely.

There are much better things to spend your $200 on.

In a few months they'll just be sitting there taking up space. Happened to a bunch of my friends with Magic.

Haha some person beat me with a wall deck in Magic the other night...the new expansions are getting pretty wacky (and pretty overpowered to boot).

You are chasing something that has no end, there will always be better cards, always someone that spends more time building decks, it's like an MMO, never ending treadmill until you get sick of it.

When I got to my breaking point with Magic, the only way I could have fun with it was closed deck tournaments, maybe try that with your friends.

It's very unlikely you'll still be playing Yugi-Oh a year from now. That is a huge investment to be made on a hobby with a very limited life-span. Find a hobby that is more generous to your time and money.

Stay the hell away from any and all collectible card games. I barely escaped from my Magic the Gathering phase with my sanity and friendships intact, let alone my wallet.

Sounds like Yu-gi-oh has changed a lot since I played it during the first season of the anime. Sounds like you enjoy the game much more than I ever did, so good for you. Personally I would stop based on how much money I've used on cards when I was younger only to have no interest in playing them. Not knowing where they are probably doesn't help.

Take it from a friend that has seen his best friend spend way too much on Magic Cards. They can get quite expensive and is simply not worth it. I will not stop him though; he enjoys playing it a lot. It just gets concerning when he literally buys two packs of Magic Cards whenever we go to the card store or Walmart....and that is every time. He does have the income to support it and no one can tell him what he does with his own money. It is just something I have seen and experienced before. Dark times when I was a teenager.

That is why I am not into any card game, but board games are at least a fun time. Never will play MTG.

do you have the one thats five cards that turn into one card? some egyptian shit if I remember.

get those cards.

#25 Posted by NoobSauceG7 (1015 posts) - 4 months, 14 days ago

@Vinny_Says: Your thinking of Exodia right? Most decks with him are pretty gimmicking since they are just for stalling people and drawing a lot of cards.
