Part 1 PRE WRITTENS
Part 2 FREESTYLES
I would recommend Nujabes.
He's responsible for 90% of the coolness of the Samurai Champloo OST. He's a phenomenal hip hop artist.
Another awesome song from Nujabes:
I try and spread the word about Billy Talent here in the U.S. Anywhere else and they wouldn't need the word of mouth. They're one of the best bands going on right now. Great lyrics and delivery, interesting bass parts (which is pretty rare in most bands), solid drumming, but probably the best part is Ian D'Sa on guitar. That guy comes up with the most unique riffs.
Well, it depends on the person, but I always try and promote 90's alt-rock band Superchunk and their side project band, Portastatic.
Also, the Pixies but that should be as obvious as recommending the Beatles.
i'd recommend Explosions in the Sky. its a purely instrumental band, no singer or lyrics or anything like that. very ambient but really REALLY good. perfect chill out music. its perfect for studying.
and its just so good that i dont know how someone could actually dislike them, so its not like a matter of taste. like if i were to recommend a band i really like, someone else might dislike them due to taste but i honestly can't really see why anyone would DISLIKE this. so yeah, check them out.

I'll toss Radiohead into the middle of this thread.
I also enjoyed Lil Wayne, though lately he's been a bit off. I suppose prison can do that to a person.
I would either recommend Unwritten Law or Anti-Flag, but since there can only be one it would be the former more than the latter.
It really depends, i would never recommend one band to everyone, because that band would be Phish, and the vast majority of people dont like Phish.
But I would recommend one of these 5:
1)Phish
2)Disco Biscuits
3)MF Doom
4)MC Frontalot
5) The Black Crowes
I lied! 6) Ween
Are we talking about an entire discography or just one album?
If it's one album, I would say "El Cielo" by dredg.
@Witzig: +1 Follower. As a kid who grew up before the internet was around, I had only local shows, friends and magazines to expose me to new music. SST as a label, changed my life. I never knew music like what they had existed. SST exposed me to a bunch of different bands that sounded and looked different, but all shared the DIY ethos.
Forget about albums, I'm going to just recommend Duck Down Records - the greatest independent label you've probably never heard of. They have a wealth of high-quality talent signed under them, and they're locally owned and run out of New York, instead of being some huge, international, faceless mega-corporate conglomerate.
I'd definitely recommend Cage, because not nearly enough people know about him. Shit, I only heard about him because him and Eminem had beef ("'Cause once I drop this solo shit it's over with, I bought Cage's tape opened it and dubbed over it" -Role Model, The Slim Shady LP). While I do fucking love all of his music, picking just a few songs is difficult to do, because all three of his albums vary so much stylistically.
Here's a song from each album:
Horrorcore Cage from his early days of rampant (and I mean fucking RAMPANT) drug use:
More conventional, but still indie Cage after he lost weight and got clean:
And finally, we have emo-rap-rock Cage, this song is an anthem:
After VS, meh. Ten and VS, though, both blew me away back in their day.Pearl Jam. Most people have heard em, but they are fuckin incredible. Tool would probably be better because fewer people are as familiar with them, and that's a bummer.
I'll have to go with Arab Strap, pretty much the soundtrack to my life at the moment. Minimalistic Scottish post-rock for the most part, but with vocals, and the occasional lo-fi dance beat thrown in for good measure. If you like 'R U Still into it' by Mogwai, or any Mogwai at all for that matter, then you'll almost definately like Arab Strap. Be warned, they are pretty much one of the most depressing bands ever though, frank lyrics about shit relationships, but there's humour to be found also (The First Big Weekend)! If you've recently split up from a long term relationship and are currently in that murkey area between questioning whether you ever loved somebody/ever could/just being a cynical bastard about 'love' in general, and enjoying being single whilst also missing having somebody meaningful next to you at night, just listen to Arab Strap, you owe it to yourself . . .
i'd recommend sade. she's been around for as long as i have been on this planet. her lyrics are deep, personal, meaningful, and a listener can tell she has actually experienced the very lyrics she sings. she's the definition of style, class, sophistication, and talent.
here's a video of one of my favorite songs of hers. it's called "cherry pie." it's off her first album that came out in the 80s. it's my favorite song that was never released as a single. sade and her band mates rock this song! the live version sounds much better than the studio version.
There are way too many bands I would recommend to people, but if I could only choose one, it'd have to be The Protomen, because they could probably use the extra awareness and support more than most, being a completely indie group.
