Gawker just made an article that is completely true in every way. I could not have stated what the author of the article stated better. Well actually I probably could have, simply because I'm amazing like that. Anyway, read and behold the truth, and if you don't have a Facebook yet, stop being anti-social pissing off all of your friends and get one.

Oh, yeah, I'm not on Facebook. Like, it's so invasive. If you've said anything like this, I feel bad for you.

Facebook has over half a billion users. Almost everyone I know uses it. I use it. You probably use it. But ubiquity isn't equal to universality. Everyone knows one of those self righteous Facebook abstainers. Social media luddites. Pushing aside modern society in favor of a purer lifestyle, devoid of pokes, tags, and feeds. Defenders of something more natural and independent than Zuckerberg's friendship hive.

Except really, these people aren't defending anything except antisocial, extremely annoying behavior. And if you're one of them—you need to stop.

I will grant you this: Facebook, much like Twitter, has a lot that sucks about it. A tremendous amount. You're exposed to inane human behavior on a scope and volume unprecedented in the history of mankind. And yes, there are privacy eyebrow-raises that are warranted—it's a little weird that people I barely know anymore see where I work, where I live, and who I'm talking to. And there's plenty of crap. Pokes from creepy people. Photos of idiots. Moronic comments. Racism. All the worst parts about our species, sandwiched between poorly-targeted banner ads.

And yet, Facebook is a spectacular tool.

Facebook is the most important way we touch our friends online, period. Birthdays, parties, Passover seders, graduations—they're all organized on Facebook. Wedding photos, baby photos, stupid college parties photos you're nostalgic about already—they're all on Facebook. Everyone you might still care about in your life, despite distance, work, stress, money, and time—they're (mostly) all on Facebook. And all there to grasp, with the most minimal of effort. Really. Just click a bunch. If you care about any of these things—socializing, memories, friendships—you should be using Facebook, in spite of all its sour, vexing flaws.

Basically, if you don't like Facebook, it sounds to me like you don't like your friends. And what kind of terrible person doesn't like friends? Even Hitler had friends.

#3 Edited by EveretteScott (1330 posts) -

I have no desire to have a facebook and won't. I use that thing called a phone to interact with family and/or friends.
Also I could go on a rant on how idiotic that article was, serious or not, but I feel like not making myself rage.

#4 Posted by Make_Me_Mad (2953 posts) -

Or, hell, I could just get in touch with my friends any of the other twenty ways available to do so.

#5 Posted by Enigma777 (6047 posts) -

I haven't logged onto Facebook in a year and  half ever since my mom send me a friend request. When your parents get on, you just know it's time to move on...

#6 Posted by pornstorestiffi (4905 posts) -

Well facebook can go suck feces. I'm not signing up, and why the hell would i? Whats that i hear your say? to stay in touch with long lost "friends"... yeah no, just no. Now crawl back under the rock from where you came.

#7 Posted by Fajita_Jim (1463 posts) -

My personal life is private. I'd like to retain the intimacy of allowing only close friends and relations to share in it, and we don't need a corporate sponsorship in order to do so.

#8 Posted by melcene (3056 posts) -

I sent the article to my brother who still refuses to join any form of social networking.

I use Facebook because it allows me to keep up with people I should keep up with, but have NO interest in talking to, like most of my family.

Oh Gawker, you rascal you.
#12 Posted by KaosAngel (13765 posts) -

If people bitch about privacy, you can turn it all on strictest so no one can see you who isn't your friend.  Even friend of friends can't see you.

My Facebook only has about 110 people, and I like it that way.  Those 100+ people are close family, or people I talk to at least once every other week.

I use facebook but that guys a dick.

I have close to interest in Facebook for some reason.

#15 Posted by TehFlan (1944 posts) -

If most of the people I know aren't on Facebook either, is there really a point to it? The author of that article needs to get over himself.

I just wrote this counter article which I totally agree with:

Fuck off.

#17 Edited by FourWude (2261 posts) -

Typical media bullshit reasoning, 'everyone does it, so should you'.

I'd trust Facebook more if it wasn't directly funded by the CIA and thus the NSA. Call me stupid, but I like to make CIA/NSA agents work to get access to my information. It's no fun when they can access it all on a website, provided by me.

Think about it, me NOT being on Facebook is keeping a CIA/NSA bastard in a job. I'm helping the US economy, they should be fucking thanking me.

#18 Posted by KaosAngel (13765 posts) -
@FourWude: But at the cost you'll have a guy or two follow you around a couple days to make sure you're doing okay.
#19 Posted by Lamashtu (252 posts) -

There's a benefit to a small social circle of close friends. As the late great Mitch Hedberg once said:

"I just hang around everyone I know all the time. Then if someone needs to get in touch with me, they just say, 'Mitch'. And I say, 'What?' And turn my head slightly."

#20 Posted by Zzzleepy (162 posts) -

Facebook is just annoying, I talk to the people I want to talk to in other ways rather than just read about them. I really don't care about keeping touch with someone I stopped hanging out with 10 years ago, beacause, you know, there's a reason why we stopped hanging out. It's just awkward, and when it's awkward on the Internet you know you are in deep shit.

#21 Posted by S0ndor (2715 posts) -

Facebook is pretty sweet, yo. There is, however, no need to make it out to be more than it is. I have to say, though, it's really cool to see what all your old acquaintances are doing these days.

#22 Posted by oatz (1103 posts) -

I made one because I needed it to enter some contest, because every fucking website does contests through facebook/twitter now for some god dam reason, but I have zero interest in ever actually using it. I don't have any friends to keep in touch with and the only people on it are relatives that send me stupid invites to facebook games, religious poems and all that non-sense or people I knew tangentially from High School. The later of the two I don't want to talk to, because they never had the time to say hi to me for the 13 years we went to school together, so why would I care what they are up to now?

I understand why it's popular and how a lot of people would find it useful, but I'm one of those that just have no use for it.

The only thing I will say I liked about it though, was that it allowed me to find out that a person I went to High School with ended up marrying a girl he was dating and they now have something like 3-4 kids with another on the way. I felt so sorry for the guy. Him being in his early 20's and having that many dam kids already. Christ almighty. He was always a good guy though, so I'm sure he will raise them well.
#29 Posted by GunslingerPanda (4487 posts) -

Wow, what a terribly written article. That author's a retard.

I don't use facebook not because I'm antisocial, but because I don't want to use facebook. It offers me nothing. I really don't care about how many kids some girl I once walked past at school has, or that the band some drugged up fuck I talked to like once needs me to click some shitty link, and I really don't need to see you whining about the anniversary of your mother's death. Your existence means nothing to me. If it did, I have a fucking phone.

Kind of ironic thread title, Seems to me that the self-obsessed cunts who use facebook to let people know they just took a dump need to get over themselves.

I can't even be arsed to log onto anything but Skype. If I know someone and wish to keep in touch with them? Skype, emails, phone conversations, meeting in person. I know what my facebook having friends are like, I know what they think when they're not on facebook, I know what it's all about, so I know that it is the "You should be on Facebook" people who should get over themselves.

And besides, every potential and current employer will check your shit out on Facebook these days. Do something they disapprove of, get canned. Have something they don't like in the past, get denied a job. Happens often even here in Sweden.

#37 Posted by Slaker117 (4835 posts) -

Or, you know, I could just not be that interested in it? I used Facebook for about a year regularly, got bored with it, and stopped. I think it can be a useful service to many people, but the way I live my life, it wasn't for me. Anybody who judges someone based whether or not they use it is a dick.

#38 Posted by nintendoeats (5975 posts) -

I have never had any desire to have a Facebook account. Internet-based interaction is something that I suffer through to talk with people that share my interests. Why would I want to apply that to people that I can actually see in real life?

So more or less:

I could attack you on a personal level, I really want to aswell, HOWEVER that won't change your mind. Heaven to bettsy it will just make you more stubborn and ignore the points I provide. So here goes nothing.

' Oh, yeah, I'm not on Facebook. Like, it's so invasive. If you've said anything like this, I feel bad for you.' But it is invasive, don't you see? It's hardly a invalid point to argue that a site ONE site knows so much about you, I mean you give it your date of birth, mobile number, home number, your friend, where you live, what you like and dislike. You have been defined, which is ironic since the only reason people seem to use facebook is so that they feel less and less like lambs, identical and ready for our slaughter.

' Facebook has over half a billion users. Almost everyone I know uses it. ' And? Doesn't make it right, fun or even worthwhile. Just makes it the thing.

' Everyone knows one of those self righteous Facebook abstainers. Social media luddites. Pushing aside modern society in favor of a purer lifestyle, devoid of pokes, tags, and feeds. Defenders of something more natural and independent than Zuckerberg's friendship hive. ' This makes me wish I didn't promise to attack you on a personal level since your article which you agree with attacks me, but hey I'll take the high ground. Self Righteous? READ THE COMMENTS ON FACEBOOK, I've read some saying 'Off to bed now' 'I did this and I rule' and don't tell me you haven't... that's self rightous, I want to avoid that. Pushing aside modern society? ARE YOU INSANE, Clicking accept to your friends request makes me no more like you ( thankfully ) it just means that I met you at a party and you as anti-social as ever and who defines yourself by your facebook wants an extra friend, and hey I seemed cool. I will NEVER consider ANYONE whos prime relation is being friends on facebook, it's 1's and 0's nothing else, a fillament of a bond, weak. And I'm sorry if your MODERN society of socializing involves largely online anti-social activity and I'm really am sorry. Independance has nothing to do with it, this person sound like a 14 year old who has only ever lived on facebook, I would have called my lifestyle prior to facebook or now ( still no facebook ) independant, more selective, I know, speak to and only induldge myself in a few people who I consider close friends rather than 1,000's of which I barely care about and which the feeling is mutual.

' Except really, these people aren't defending anything except antisocial, extremely annoying behavior.'

I'm defending MYSELF, the article calls me and my behaviour annoying, am I defending a purer lifestyle as the article AND only the article says or rather am I defending my CHOICE, which I don't force on other. WHAT THE HELL? Anti-social? Facebook is anti-social, look at it, it's a bunch of people pretending to give a damn about your lackluster lifestyle only so that you do the same to them, I said I wouldn't attack you personally but sorry the high ground is for another time.

YOU ARE EXTREMELY STUPID, You and I'm sure there's many others who are too mind meltingly engrossed in a GOD DAMN WEBSITE to look outside and smeel the roses, you arrogant, self loving whore. I'm sorry but you are, you seem to define youself by your facebook, and no doubt they know far more about you than you do. You live of it, thrive of it, without you are nothing, your 'friends' will sotp caring because it's no longer so easy to listen, comment or like you, they will go I guarantee if you where duying 95% of our friends would not care so much as send you a letter, and are those your friends or meerly people that surround you. You are no better than the other million of hormonal drones. GO OUTSIDE, SIT WITH SOMEONE NEW. I do it all the time, talking to 1 new person in reaL world ( remember that world outside of parties and such )  THAN SENDING OR ACCEPTING friends invites. Please ust shut up.

' Facebook is the most important way we touch our friends online'- DO IT OFFLINE, go on, why do you keep in touch with your friends online their your friends. NOT SOME MINOR INCONVIENCE YOU MUST SATISFY IN ORDER FOR THEM TO GIVE A DAMN ABOUT YOU.

' they're all organized on Facebook'- I have a real world account they contact me via that, it's lovely.

'
Basically, if you don't like Facebook, it sounds to me like you don't like your friends. And what kind of terrible person doesn't like friends? Even Hitler had friends.' I hope with all my heart that facebook and the internet goes offline, let's see how many of your precious friends like you then. They and you will be forgotten.

I DID NOT ASK FOR THIS, YOU POSTED THE STUPID ARTICLE, YOU ARE THE FACEBOOKER, I MEERLY KEEP GOING WITHOUT FACEBOOK, DON'T IMBOSE IT, YET YOU DO? WHY? NEED A NEW FRIEND?

I will get hate for this I know it, but atleast I can say that hate makes me unique, your a hooker given as many handjobs as you can, trying to please eveyrone but failing in some many way. Good night.

I don't care if you do or don't use Facebook so stop talking about it! I was hoping this is what the article was talking about but instead its some weird rant about everyone having to use Facebook.

Why would I want to be some number on someone's friend count? People add you without even saying hello. If someone called you on the phone and didn't say a word but just sat there you'd think they were pretty creepy!

Plus, I actually have friends who bother to contact me regardless of whether or not I use facebook.
