I'm attempting to broaden my rap taste.
@IkariNoTekken: Just doing a little youtube search has sent me to some great music I haven't heard, thank you :D im liken' the Quasimodo stuff quite a bit.
edit: thought I had heard madlib before, i hear him on pandora a bunch, but with Jay Dee as Jaylib
I'm into the more recent stuff. Kanye, ASAP Rocky, Shabazz Palaces, Big Boi, Dizzee Rascal's Boy in da Corner and some of Lil Wayne's stuff (his recent stuff has been terrible mind). And don't bother with Childish Gambino. Hes like a really bad pop-rap mix of Lil wayne and Kanye.
@IkariNoTekken: UGK not really doing it for me sorry. Most Southern rap excepting Geto Boys and Little Brother isn't my thing. I will give credit to Outkast even though I myself am not particularly drawn to the music.
Lots of good names here. Personally, Talib Kweli is fantastic, Nas, Common, Black Presidents, Mos Def, and if you want a good female rapper Jean Grae is the best one out.

I see what you did there. Well done ;) Although if I was Em, I'd put myself at the top of that list.
@Sincillian: hey dude you said you like lupe so i think you would dig a rapper named shad. he has a similar positive vibe. these songs are all off his album TSOL.
So I'm not going to just post my favourite songs because I'm not sure that what you want. I love a lot of different hip-hop but I'm going to try and appeal to your particular tastes, although the thread does mention expanding them. From your description, you seem to appreciate lyricism, inventive production, and may have a disposition against gangster rap. If you do, I would say, don't limit yourself, there's plenty incredible gangster rappers and it's important part of the genre. Anyways, these are not necessarily my favourite songs or artists, but they're some of my favourite that fit your description.
Kendrick Lamar is the most recent rapper to take the throne as the "conscientious rapper". But he doesn't resort to elitist preaching, he's a 3-Dimensional person. He's a young guy who's worried about his own generation. I think fans of Lupe will dig Kendrick Lamar.
Kendrick Lamar - A.D.H.D
The First two Kanye West albums seem right up your alley. They're modern classics in my opinion.
Some recent ones to check out
Kendrick Lamar - Section 80
Jalin Roze - The Brilliance http://jalinroze.bandcamp.com/album/the-brilliance
Blue Scholars - Cinematropolis
@Tuffgong: Ah that's a shame, but fair enough. I'm partial to southern hip hip myself; been listening to a fair bit of Curren$y lately.
Big fan of UGK; Ridin' Dirty is in my top 10 for hip hop albums and they're probably my favourite from the south.
In the end I don't have much of coast preference, what about you?
@IkariNoTekken: I find that a majority of the music I listen to happens to come from the East including New York, DC, and one or two from Philly and North Carolina. Although I'm partial to the lakes area as well. Detroit and Chicago both have some greats associated with them. I do also love me some West Coast grooves from back in the day and now with Stones Throw.
Yeah I would say I'm generally coastless but I can't deny that a lot of my music is East Coast in origin.
