It's a fruit. There is no debate. A fruit is the seed bearing produce of a plant. That is exactly what a tomato is.

As someone who's name I can't remember once said though "Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad".

Scientifically, it's a fruit. HOWEVER, I will not let something trivial like science stand in my way. It will always be a vegetable to me. ALWAYS!

If you are getting all stressed about this then never look in to "nuts" - specifically how few are actually nuts even though they have nuts right there in the name.

Well, if you switch the numbers around it could also spell 'teel'; hm...maybe I should make a poll about whether 3137 is really 'leet' or 'teel'.

Oh wait, by posting this I'm ruining my post count, aren't I. :(

It's a fruit, however according to the US Department of Agriculture, ketchup has been briefly classified as a vegetable.

The classification in this case was by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for its subsidized school lunch program... USDA standards at the time required that a reimbursable lunch consist of five items: meat, milk, bread, and two servings of fruit or vegetables. Many kids refused to eat the veggies and the stuff wound up as "plate waste." Would-be realists on the panel reasoned that if they could count ketchup as a vegetable they could meet federal standards without having to throw away so many lima beans, thereby saving money while having no impact on the kids... In the 90s, the Clinton administration got little grief when it proposed counting salsa as a vegetable, as properly made salsa has more nutritional heft than sugar-laden ketchup.  The Straight Dope

Also, while we're on the subject of fruits and vegetable, no word rhymes with "Orange".  Oxford Dictionary

Its a fruit. Splenty of fruit don't taste sweet, plenty of fruit taste shitty. Taste isn't a factor in classification. Most fruit wouldn't work in a fruit salad. Coconuts for example. Or jalapeños. But hey, no law against being stupid.
