Bob's Burgers pretty much is what the Simpsons were in the 90s. A slightly psychedelic look at a slightly overdrawn regular family, with regular problems spinning out somewhat - without ever going completely absurdist like latter day Simpsons stories tend to do.

I absolutely love the show. Great characters. Great voice actors. Great writing. The first show since the Simpsons, that does what the Simpsons did - just as good, maybe even better.

Agree? Disagree? Or haven't you even watched it yet?

I did like what I seen of Bob burger but not sure i'd go that far with putting it on far with Simpson in it's prime.

#4 Posted by MistaSparkle (2148 posts) -

I like the Simpsons more than Bob's Burgers, but Bob's Burgers is really good too. All the voice actors in that show are amazing, you can never go wrong with Jon Benjamin! Still, though, Simpsons all the way.

I really need to take a day, sloth around and watch 90s Simpsons episodes all day. I haven't done that in years.

How can you compare one of (if not THE) worst animated show in history to the best?

Bob's Burgers is absolute trash.

#7 Posted by myketuna (1679 posts) -

I see what they're going for a lot of the time and sometimes I'll crack a smile or chuckle a bit, but from the episodes on Netflix, I still haven't been hit with a huge bout of laughter.

I do like the eldest daughter though. Most of the time.

#8 Posted by TruthTellah (8801 posts) -

No.

I don't think Bob's Burgers is setting out to be like The Simpsons either.

It's never going to be a big cultural icon running forever; it's not going to have that huge audience. It's clearly happy with just being what it is and enjoying that particular niche. It doesn't need to become a breakout hit or the next Simpsons.

I'll easily agree with you simply because I never really liked the simpsons (or futurama for that matter)

Because he has an opinion, like yours.

Even if yours is incredibly wrong. ;)

And he's comparing it to The Simpsons in its prime. The Simpsons, in its prime, while I'm sure there was thoughts of franchising the shit out of it, still mostly was content with what it was, too--a brilliantly-written, subversive, kinda weird, awesome cartoon.

wtf is Bob's Burgers?

#12 Posted by Trainer_Red (314 posts) -

Bitches please. Bob's Burgers is gold compared to that dull animated garbage you call "The Simpsons".

Sure it used to be good about 10 years ago, but now it's absolute garbage. Same goes for Family Guy and South Park.

Bob's Burgers' style of humor is really quite different to The Simpsons.

What can I say? I'm a big King of the Hill fan and a Family Guy fan but strictly only the first 3 seasons. It took a sharp nosedive after that.

#17 Posted by TruthTellah (8801 posts) -

@Demoskinos: Ahh. Okay, well, that's certainly its own kind of humor. Though, I think you'd like Bob's Burgers.

Ever enjoy Home Movies?

#18 Posted by Demoskinos (14769 posts) -

@TruthTellah: Oh yeah, I've enjoyed what I've watched of Bob's Burgers I just never watch TV hardly at all anymore. I never did watch Home Movies enough to form an opinion one way or the other it was just always the show before Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim to me. Haha.

#19 Posted by mustachioeugene (506 posts) -

Bob's Burgers is amazing and it might be my favorite show on network television. But its not the Simpsons. I don't know if another sitcom, animated or not, will ever be such a cultural icon like the Simpsons was/is to a generation of tv viewers.

#20 Posted by Poppduder (460 posts) -

I've never seen the show (havnt had even basic cable in a few years) but how come no one told me John Benjamin had a new show and judging by youtube clips it's decently pretty funny?

#21 Posted by Landon (4138 posts) -

Bobs Burgers is really funny. I watched all of season 1 on Netflix in a few days. I really wish they'd add more.

#22 Posted by Maajin (1059 posts) -

Never heard of it before, but you did not make a very good case by linking YouTube clip of the exact kind of joke Family Guy has been making for about ten years.

Oh? What do you watch? Or do you not take in too much video programming?

@TruthTellah: Literally the only TV I watch every week is WWE's Monday Night RAW every monday beyond that I don't watch TV anymore.

Wow, yeah? Do you watch online videos a lot or something? Are videogames your big extra time sucker?

I mean, I have some friends who don't watch TV, but they're at least mildly insane. So, it's simply a bit surprising to me.

#26 Posted by Giantstalker (1634 posts) -

Never heard of this show before.

Maybe I'll check it out on my next deployment.

#27 Posted by MariachiMacabre (7077 posts) -

I would say Futurama is the new Simpsons quality-wise. It's becoming more and more apparent that Mr. Groening cares more about Futurama than The Simpsons. Which is fine by me. I fucking love Futurama.

Bob's Burgers is great! Anyone that can make a Terminator 2 reference for a girl shaving her legs for the first time gets a thumbs up for me!

#29 Posted by StarvingGamer (8150 posts) -

I have never heard of this show. The clip you posted makes me wish I still hadn't.

Yeah pretty much. If I'm sitting in front of a screen I'd much rather play something than be passive and watch it.

I think this show is funny as hell, but it reminds me of King of the Hill more than the Simpsons. There's less of a focus on satire and more situational comedy with gentle lessons. I wasn't surprised to see that Jim Dauterive developed the show since he was a writer on KotH for a long time. This show took a lot of the things I like about Home Movies and Dr. Katz and polished them.

As much as I love Bob's Burgers (my wife and I have watched every episode and we intend to cosplay as Bob and Linda this Halloween) and anything associated with Loren Bouchard/H. Jon Benjamin, I'd have to say no. As far as animation goes, the only thing that has ever even come close to having the same level of cultural significance of The Simpsons in its heyday was South Park, and I hate that show.

#33 Posted by Zaccheus (1792 posts) -

Bob's Burgers is excellent. Just behind Archer as the best animated series.

#34 Posted by TheHT (11148 posts) -

That's a good clip. Hard to compare something to The Simpsons in its heyday, but that's a pretty good clip.

#35 Posted by bartok (2469 posts) -

I read that Bob's Burgers and Archer are going to have a crossover episode taking place on Archer. Just like when The Critic appeared on The Simpsons.

#36 Posted by MikeGosot (3227 posts) -

I did not enjoy the only episode of Bob's Burger i've saw. I'll give it another try because that clip was great.

There's reason to believe that Groening was never a driving creative force behind either shows during their prime.

As for the question; The Simpsons is massively influential and a cultural behemoth. Bob's Burgers is a great show in its own right, but at its best the Simpsons was miles ahead of all other television comedies and grabbed the attention of audiences who never would've given animated sitcoms so much as a glance.

Bobs Burgers is pretty good.

Bob's Burgers really grew on me

#40 Posted by FonkyMucker (149 posts) -

If we are comparing the vast amounts of cultural saturation the Simpsons had in their prime (which we aren't), I think the only thing that comes close is Angry Birds.

As far story structure and heart, Bob's Burgers IS the spiritual successor to The Simpsons. Bob's Burger can be silly, crude, and weird but always has the love the family as its core. Back in its prime, it was that heart that kept the Simpsons from turning into a crazy mess (see Family Guy) and make the crazy moment that much more crazy.

I love Bobs Burgers, which means that FOX is going to cancel it after this season to spite me.

#41 Posted by Morningstar (2150 posts) -

Of course not.

Bob's Burgers is great. Can't comment on the Simpsons though, since I've never watched it.

Granted the art style is kind of "ugly" but that's part of what adds to it's charm.

Haven't seen BB, but The Simpsons had about six or seven seasons of absolute golden, top-notch comedy. Not many shows can top that so it would be unfair to compare BB or any other animated series to The Simpsons. I do like Jon Benjamin in Archer, though. Pretty damned funny show in its own right (and returns to FX next week I believe).

#48 Posted by DeathByWaffle (633 posts) -

It's a pretty decent show, I like it, but it doesn't even come close to the old Simpsons.

#49 Posted by crusader8463 (14419 posts) -

No.

#50 Posted by Seppli (10251 posts) -

My favorite episode thus far was their Halloween episode. It was so freakin' fantastic.
