My gerbils that I got as pets (two males like you're supposed to) are now constantly fighting (tried to intervene but no use) even though they got along weeks ago. It has now gotten to the point where I just want one of them to bite the others' head off and get it over with. It's driving me insane! What would you feel if you were in this situation?

Your not supposed to keep them toghter...thats the number one rule dude....Two males will fight for dominance.

You can have two females If I recall right but not to males....

Forgive me for my complete ignorance on gerbils and their "maintenance", but why can't you just separate them?

take them to counseling, maybe they just have some deeper issues they need to work through before they can get along.

Bring in Supernanny and tell the gerbils to go sit in the corner when they've been naughty. Do it in an authoritative voice so they understand the concept of hierarchy and power. And when they've been good gerbils reward them with some telly time.

Get them out of the same tank now. They will kill each other.

I'm actually in this situation every day with my dogs at home.  But I imagine socialization with dogs is different than with gerbils.  That being said, I don't want to see someone rip someone else's head off, but there are times I wish one of my dogs would kick the others' ass good enough so there is no more question of who is the pack leader.

Make them compete as a two-man figure skating team. They'll hate each other to begin with, but after facing adversity they'll find friendship where they least expected it.

How would one go about separating them? Should I just put a glass cylinder between the tank?

I would suggest this as well. Couple's counseling can work wonders but sometimes it just wasn't meant to happen.

I knew somebody who's two male gerbils got into a duel to the death and one ended up tearing open the others stomach or something equally gory.

Yeah, as suggested by others, separating them would be a good idea. Unless you've got a thing for hamster deathmatches.

Do not get pets any bigger than your gerbils.  And for god's sake do not reproduce.

I don't have another tank to put them into so I just used a book to separate them for the time while I make a trip up to Pets FUCKING Mart.

get another cage or something to separate them. i mean if they were bigger animals like dog or a cat you just tell them not to find and they will listen.

Stop waiting for it to happen. Man up and take control of the situation by biting one of their heads off yourself.

I dont think you want that. As a kid we accidently got a male and female gerbil. So they fucked like crazy and eventually the mother gave birth to about 8 other gerbils. We then separated the male and female to prevent more offspring. Well one day I go to refill the water for the mom and the children to find one of the babies has had its head bitten off from the mother. I was about 8 at the time. Lets just say I never bought gerbils again.

I kinda got lucky with my guinea pigs. When I initially bought my second one (which was about a year younger than my first), the older one would constantly rumble at him and mount him to show dominance. Thankfully they never actually tried to bite each other. Have had them for a couple years and now they are best friends, always playing and grooming each other. Anyways if their fighting gets really bad you'll have to take one back. Not much you can do if they don't like each other.

Yes it is, you're not suppose to keep them near one another.
