So I have this friend you see. He has sort of had a hard time talking about this to most people in his life seeing as he doesn't want to be judged by them and is kind of embarrassed by the situation entirely. Lets call my friend Bob for the sake of secrecy and lets just accept that Bob is not the best at setting and achieving his goals in life.

When Bob was in high school all Bob did was fly though most of it and slack off because he felt that everything would work itself out in the end. Bob never had anyone to push him or to set boundaries for him and though Bob takes full responsibility for where he is in life, he can't help but feel a little cheated.

Bob never had much stability as a kid, seeing as he moved twice a year and never had time to make real friends or develop a lot of traits that most of his peers have. He was just left alone to do whatever he felt was best for himself and being the naive kid that he was he chose to do the bare minimum and now is stuck in life limbo.

Bob never graduated high school even though he never dropped out. He was short a mere 30 credits from graduating, but didn't care about that because he found a well paying job. This job that Bob found however has caused him much stress seeing as it is an "under the table" type of job where he doesn't have to pay taxes, but he also has no benefits such as medical and work benefits. Drained of any and all passion still in him, the job has left him with all those "What Ifs?" that middle aged men seem to ask themselves. Bob is now 19 and is about to be fired from this job because of his foolish mistake to allow certain people to do certain things while turning a blind eye. What is Bob left with now?

Nothing. No insurance, no job, no experience, no education, nothing at all. Bob looked into the military as a last resort and found out that people with asthma are rejected, which sucks because I.... Bob has asthma. What do you suggest Bob do?

Bob is thinking to go back to school and maybe get a grant, but Bob has no idea where to start or what to expect. Bob isn't exactly proud of where he is right now, but he doesn't believe that all hope is lost. What do you suggest Bob do?

PS. Prostitution and selling drugs are out of the question... for now.

Bob should become a prostitute. I think it's time.

Bob should go back to school! Go back to school De- Bob!

#4 Posted by Pezen (1594 posts) -

What can you expect from someone named Bob?

#5 Posted by HatKing (5896 posts) -

Because prostitution and selling drugs is sort of what you made that job sound like. That or assassin.

Please don't correct me. Let me have this.

Bob has internet right, Bob should hit up the website of his local board of education and find out where he can go to get his GED, if that's what he wants.

#7 Posted by Jeust (10559 posts) -

Going back to school is an idea. Think hard of what you want to do, and start working for it. If you finish highschool, you can go to college, and have a normal life. :)

Good luck Bob!

Bob should become a banger

#9 Posted by clstirens (847 posts) -

Yep. He should get a GED or even do online highschool. Not really sure about where Bob might stay or pay for living expenses, but I've known a number of people who've had to go back and finish high school. He might even be able to take an Act/Sat and make it into college.

get GED, go to community college, find job while you're doing it, you'll be fine

Bob should become a Builder! Only question is can he fix it?

#12 Posted by Jams (2960 posts) -

Work retail at a store of your liking. Learn it well, then one day maybe 30 years from now you'll have enough experience to open your own store. That's how they did it before everyone went to college. It's a long a hard life, but you'll be a better person for it.

#13 Posted by Gunslinger0130 (224 posts) -

Bob's still young, he can still do almost anything he can dream up. Bob should do some research and soul searching on what he wants out of life and create a plan that will allow him to reach his goals. There are resources out there that Bob can use, people that want to help Bob achieve his goals, all Bob needs to do is ask. Bob is still young, Bob has lots of potential, good luck Bob.

Bob is only 19. While it's going to be harder for him, Bob can still wring a whole lot of something out of life. The first thing Bob needs to do is get himself in order. He needs to do something at least somewhat fulfilling. I suggest working out - it requires almost no money if you do it by jogging down the street or doing push-ups in your floor. Bob could just do something like that to start off every morning with some kind of accomplishment and as a bonus it could definitely help out with the asthma. Then, Bob should swallow his pride and embarassment and look for support and help from other people. What can they tell him? No? At nineteen years old Bob still has a long life ahead of him. He realizes that he has past fuck ups and if he can take hold of things by horns, he can come out better than he ever would if he just keeps dicking around.

Note that Bob is getting advice from someone who is also dealing with some stress from having fucked up in the past, especially in high school, and who isn't having the opportunities he could have had if he'd just stopped for a second to do something worth doing. This someone who's giving advice understands the difficulties involved, most especially the psychological barriers that are just hard to break through. The ones that keep constantly saying that you've fucked up and it's over. Well, you've fucked up, but it ain't over 'til you're dead.

@Dexter_Morgan_: Hi Bob, well I'd suggest prostitution or selling...Okay, maybe not then. If you have a big cock you can go into the porn industry, i hear they pay well. But should you do so, make sure to be smart with your money.

#22 Posted by Sjupp (1910 posts) -

Bob sounds like a cool guy. I'd definitely recommend Bob to get back to education. Bob hasn't really even begun his life properly (19 years old? Jesus!) and I think Bob has plenty of things ahead of him and plenty of time to do it.

Bob should mail in for his free order of Enzyte today.

19 is not old at all. If Bob goes back and graduates and then goes right on to university or college afterwards he will have already caught up with all those people who took a break between high school and post-secondary. Bob seems like the sort of guy who can become something so long as he shows the gumption. Hell i just saw him in a thread talking about the Iliad.

Get your GED, maybe try out some Community College to see what you...er, Bob is interested in. Being only 19, you...er..he will have plenty of time to get things on track.

#28 Posted by Popskinz (409 posts) -

Why bother making up a person when we know it's you?

#29 Posted by Subjugation (4720 posts) -

You're far from an unrecoverable situation. Get your GED and go on to college. 19 isn't even old; you'll fit right in. I'm finishing my second year of college at 22. Your biggest problem seems to be motivation. You lacked it in high school and you seem to lack it again now in terms of stepping up to the plate and doing something about your situation. Life lesson: If you want something, GO GET IT.

Thanks a lot for this. I think i'm going to go back to school and start working out again.

And thanks to everyone else who gave me advice and stuff. I really appreciate it.

Bob should call his "friend" Becker and ask him for advice.

#34 Posted by TooWalrus (13178 posts) -

None of us are really in a position to tell you what to do. I can tell you what I would do, though.

If I had a place to stay, I'd get my GED, get a job at a local pizza joint (because those jobs are easy if you're competent, and have a high turnover rate- you'll be making $10/hour in no time. It's not much, but it's more than enough to pay for those community college classes you're going to be taking. Then transfer to a university and major in whatever your preferred career is.

If you're homeless (or close to it), hitchhike your way as far south as possible, so you don't freeze to death in the winter. Get a prepaid cellphone & PO box, and start turning in applications, you can shower at the local YMCA. Enjoy life as a bum until you can get a cheap apartment, then focus on GEDs and such. I've put far too much thought into what I would do if I suddenly found myself homeless.

Go back to school- better yet, take the initiative and become self taught. Do the SATS or whatever and boom.

Watch Midnight Cowboys. Just do that.

#38 Posted by Jimbo (9804 posts) -

You're still a baby. Better to figure out you fucked up at 19 than ten years from now.  Good luck turning things around.  Accepting that they need turning around is half the battle, so you're already halfway there.

#39 Posted by insane_shadowblade85 (1422 posts) -

Go back to school, that's my advice and do it quick. I never graduated high school and am in the process of getting my GED. I did a lot of illegal things too and I never want to go back to doing that ever again. But yeah, you're still young so you should go back to school. You never want to be sitting down as a grown ass man and wishing you could do things over again.

#40 Edited by CornBREDX (5126 posts) -

You're 19. You are no where close to losing everything.

Stop being dramatic. Get a GED or finish high school and find a real job.

#41 Posted by ShadowConqueror (3050 posts) -

Isn't high school free until you're twenty? Maybe Bob could finish that shit up and get another job. If not, get your GED and get another job. Then do more school.

#42 Posted by mustachioeugene (509 posts) -

Contact your former school's guidance counsellor, or equivalent, and see what options are available. Online, night school, summer school. Some education boards provide free adult education programs for finishing high school diplomas.

#47 Posted by mandude (2669 posts) -

Bob should go online, buy some books and build some skills. Once he is skilled in an area of his choosing, he should turn those skills into money. As long as he doesn't make the mistake of beating himself up over the fact that he doesn't have a formal education (which doesn't necessarily mean anything at all) he should be fine. He has a long life ahead of him.
