Just like anything involving Gangnam Style, I actively try to stay away from it.

Yup.

#52 Posted by jnw93 (23 posts) -

@ 1st they are fun to watch but after watching about 5 its abit boring and the song becomes annoying like Gangnam style did after the while.

#53 Edited by Canteu (2821 posts) -

I have no idea what it is, so if it's an internet thing, I can continue to ignore it for another week and it will be gone forever.

#54 Edited by Dethfish (3684 posts) -

I've heard of it, but I don't know what it is exactly, and I don't really care. If it's anything like Gangnam Style then I will inevitably see it at some point, probably on tv as someone tries to put it into their show so they look "hip". I actually liked Gangnam Style at first, but then it got so drove into the ground so hard that it surfaced on the other side of the planet. It's amazing how fast things get played out on the internet.

You know what's funnier than memes? People trying to elevate themselves as being somehow 'above' memes.

Harlem Shake is alright. I actually prefer the pre-drop portion of the meme more for some reason. People in motorcycle helmets dancing alone works for me.

Oh, Internet. You . . oh.

#57 Posted by SlashDance (1827 posts) -

It fucking sucks.

#58 Edited by Azurath (307 posts) -

I like it, only because that song is the jam, and the WWE one is amazing.

#59 Posted by Flappy (2298 posts) -

I'm indifferent. It could last another month or it could die tomorrow. I wouldn't care either way.

#60 Posted by TheSouthernDandy (3903 posts) -

Eh. I don't find it that amusing. Still better then planking though that was the worst.

#61 Posted by Sweep (8913 posts) -

People are trying to organise one at work with over 300 people. I think the whole concept is kinda dumb and I can't really be bothered, but at the same time it's exactly the kind of goofy shit that I actually enjoy.

At least it's not Gangnam Style, I guess?

I watched a few and remained pretty indifferent, it's just the latest fad. The only time I'm annoyed is when I see students from multiple schools having an e-peen measuring contest by bragging about their respective videos.

#63 Edited by notdavid (840 posts) -

You know what? I usually like shit like this. Internet culture in general has the potential to be humorous and interesting. The first time I saw the video for Gangam Style, I loved it. It's the enduring mainstream popularity of these things that I don't understand. When people that don't spend large amounts of time online discover a meme, they can never seem to let it go.

In short, get off my lawn. I'll just be over here breading my cat.

This is the part I have a problem with. I think it's funny when it's 4 roommates doing something goofy, but when someone puts up fucking fliers going "Hey guys, we're gonna do this video, it'll be really funny", or sends out an office email, you are putting altogether too much organization into a dumb internet meme. Case in point:

I almost want to give that one credit because it has somebody wearing the same penguin suit as that of Will Smith infamy, but seriously, no, you guys are trying way too hard. It doesn't help that most of them are wearing school colours, which just seems like a sad cry for attention on the school's part. (I know there are videos with way more students from a particular school in them, but that was the first one I saw that ruined the whole thing for me).

Basically, I am opposed to any Internet meme once The Man becomes aware of it and appropriates it, and if some student council at a university (or some supervisor at Sweep's work or whatever) wants to organize a big Harlem Shake video, then The Man has essentially compromised that meme, and it is dead to me.

#65 Posted by Ben_H (3377 posts) -

I saw the video with the military people a bit ago and thought it was funny, but then a day or two later it was on the local morning news and knew the shark had been fully jumped at that point.

#66 Edited by RoboRobb (1052 posts) -

Like all memes it's not funny

#67 Edited by Everyones_A_Critic (6305 posts) -

Meh, I'm still waiting for the Michael J. Fox Harlem Shake video...

#68 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (4415 posts) -

I honestly have no idea what that is.

#69 Edited by squiDc00kiE (360 posts) -

It's just some dumb bubblegum internet entertainment. It'll die out in time just like every other one.

#70 Posted by fox01313 (5079 posts) -

Not expecting it to be crazy online like the gangam style thing was, only good thing about the videos on this that are out there is that they are excessively short so easy to forget about them.

#71 Posted by EarlessShrimp (1660 posts) -

I saw a couple of videos of it and thought "that's how I've always danced..."

The porn one was the best one, that is all I have to say.

Prediction, it will be big for 2 months and fade away completely before the summer.

So what's your point? Even if it lasts exactly 4 days, it's fun for 4 days, what does it matter when it fades away?

Trends are fun, nothing wrong with enjoying them regardless of their duration. They're not supposed to last anyway, they're trends!

#74 Posted by On1inepersona (119 posts) -

I think the meme died to me when I tried to watch a harlmen shake video and the advertisement that played before the video was a harlem shake video.

I never implied anything about it being fun or not or if it mattered that it will fade away. That was just a prediction and nothing more.

Yeah well here is my colleges video of it.

#77 Posted by Kerned (1170 posts) -

I absolutely don't understand why these are popular. They aren't funny at all.

#78 Edited by jozzy (2042 posts) -

The first one I saw was worth a chuckle for the random-ass insert of a dude in his underwear grinding on another dude in a motorcycle helmet, but everything after that has been grating.

Just the mental image of what you describe made me smile, so I guess this whole craze has some positives.

#79 Edited by MentalDisruption (1642 posts) -

A friend showed me a couple and I got a good chuckle from it. Some are stupid, but some of them like the one underwater are pretty damn creative.

@nekusakuraba: I can agree to this also

I believe what everyone is agreeing to in this thread is this: GiantBomb Harlem Dance, we will meet in space in T-minus: 7 Hours

GO!

So you're saying that we're all gonna meet, and Harlem Shake it at the PS4 announcement. Cool!

Im surprised that no one has one of someone having a seizure yet. It would be terrible, but i think i might laugh because i have a bad sense of humor sometimes

I don't really get what the craze is about. I do not find it funny, its not entertaining, and its uninteresting. But if others find it otherwise, I respect that.

#89 Posted by CatsAkimbo (635 posts) -

As far as I'm concerned, this Daily Show version of it was a suitable end, and I don't really need to see another one.

#90 Posted by ripelivejam (4264 posts) -

i despise it and i've somehow never seen it :\

#91 Posted by ripelivejam (4264 posts) -

ok the sea world one is cute, but ONLY because it has animals in it

poor animals :(

#92 Posted by Godlyawesomeguy (6399 posts) -

It's another shitty meme that will fade in another week or two.

I could not have put it better than this. Although I will say that there was one okay one where a guy threw a cinder block (or some heavy object) into a washer, I believe it was and it got decimated.

Vague thread title edited...we don't like that...but we do like that we can edit topic titles finally.

Delicious. Delicious topic editing. MMMMmmmmm.

The law of diminishing returns is great on this one. I enjoyed about four, then the Freddy Wong one, and then I'm over it. Gangnam Style on the other hand, I enjoyed greatly, fell off when it became over-saturated then got to a point where I enjoy it again. Not the ones where people are dancing, just the original music video.

#94 Edited by TheHT (11505 posts) -

It's stupid. While trying to find out what the hell it was exactly I only saw one that made me laugh (The Daily Show one).

#95 Posted by Castiel (2661 posts) -

Nope! You forget that media will pick it up weeks after it's done, still thinking that's new and KRAZY fun. Just like they did with Gangnam Style. Jesus they dragged that one out for months. I hate TV trying so desperately to be popular.

#96 Posted by Vinny_Says (5719 posts) -

It always baffles me how so many of you giantbombers, who are here posting every day, and I can only assume that you also consume the internet every day as well, never know about any fucking meme or thing that is brought up in these forums. Either your a bunch of fucking liars or you really only ever visit giantbomb.com.

I think there are too many harlem shake videos, my youtube sub box is literally flooded with them.

#97 Posted by Draxyle (1874 posts) -

It's dumb, but it also represents what I love about the internet; the power of collective creativity thrown at a single subject with re-mixes and parodies under fair use. It's something we regularly take for granted (especially when a lot of big corporations are actively trying to shut down that aspect of the internet).

#98 Edited by Chop (1999 posts) -

I'm concerned. Apparently I'm completely out of touch with the world because I had never even heard of this until this thread. My solitude has become absolute?
