2016 is on track the be the the worst year I've experienced. Between several personal losses, and the loss of great artists seemingly every month, I've had a pretty bad year.

And now, Leonard Cohen, one of my absolute favorite artists is pronounced dead at 82 years old. A storyteller of such class, his lyrics has always spoken to me. And while his voice broke a little more each year, I actually found that it added a touch of vulnerability to his fantastic body of work.

Rest in peace, Leonard Cohen. In these troubled times, I've been reminded that there's always hope by listening to his fantastic lyrics.

There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in.

I know it's overplayed but I just listened to Hallelujah a thousand times and teared up each time. Leonard Cohen is an important artist and a beautiful lyricist. His influence will be felt for a long time to come, he will be greatly missed. Love you Leonard and thank you for your gift of music it means more to the world than you will ever know. Rest in peace brother.

Leonard Cohen helped me get through a particular difficult part of my life. I can't find the words to express how much thanks I owe him.

Heartbreaking to say the least. I know this one's a little bleak but I always thought it was really pretty in a "coming to terms" kind of way.

Now that that's out of the way...

Hallelujah, of course, a classic. Covered 800 different ways for a reason. Almost every track from The Future is amazing, I think Waiting for the Miracle might be the greatest song ever written lyrically. But I'd like to introduce some folks to one of his more obscure, but no less moving songs.

Well shit. Another one of the greats gone, what a year.

While Hallelujah certainly is iconic, considering recent times I think I'll just link to Everybody Knows. Rest in peace, Mr. Cohen.

His new single "You Want It Darker" is damn good - I was really shocked when I heard of his passing today after just hearing the new single just 3 weeks ago. RIP.

"there are heroes in the seaweed, there are children in the morning

they are leaning out for love and they will lean that way forever"

I've adored Leonard Cohen's music and poetry for years. When I heard the news this was the first song to come to mind:

So many greats - lots of them listed already, but I think I'm first with Take this Waltz:

One of my great regrets is that I found Cohen's music only after his last London tour. The album of those live recordings is something really quite special.

Farewell to one of the legends.

My parents will undoubtedly be in mourning. He had a truly powerful voice and is up there with Dylan among the greats.

His music was my travel partner when I suffered from depression in my 20's. So many long nights in college lying on a bed with a Leonard Cohen album playing on my Discman.

I lift my glass to the Awful Truth

which you can't reveal to the Ears of Youth

except to say it isn't worth a dime

RIP Leonard.

Also a "southern rock" band I was in for a while back did a rocked up cover of Hallelujah that alot of people liked, I should try and look those guys up and try to jam it again

One of the greatest songwriters ever, really. I always admired his dedication to the craft of writing, he is still an inspiration.

What a legend! I guess the one positive thing I can say is that at least he reached a fairly ripe old age.

RIP, my good man.

@whitegreyblack: yeah, that whole album is great. Hard to listen to it now without it feeling like he was writing his obituary in some ways though, as trite as that sounds.

Just finished his collection of poetry, 'book of longing', as I read the news.

Now there's not much left to do, except waiting for the miracle.

@thomasnash: David Bowie's Black Star album feels the same way. I find the video for Lazarus to now be unwatchable unless I want to fall into a pool of my own tears.
