Looking for a job change.

I've been working at A Private Day Nursery now for 2 years, I got it as soon as I left college in which I studied childcare. I loved it when I started but I really am starting to hate it now, I work average day of 8-530 each day with a one hour break and earn £6.70 an hour. I get no sick pay and the work itself is not great. Playing with the children is cool but its all the written work and keeping track of each of your children trough pictures and observations it can get very stressful.

So I was thinking of changing my job and going into something completely different, I don't have any other qualifications other than childcare but would like to try something very different from childcare. I am good at using computers, I don't mind early mornings and I am happy to work with others.

Recommend me some jobs, or perhaps tell me what you do or maybe even convince me that my wage is good and I should stay.

You do get sick pay. I'm pretty sure employers have to allow sick pay, with a doctor's note, by law.

What is the Job market like in the U.K?

@Hizang: Come to Canada and open a daycare. That shits is mad expensive here and doesn't appear to be very expensive to run.   Paperwork consists of writing down what the kid ate, whether they took a nap or not and what their general attitude was for the day.  The fact that you're actually educated in the field would probably allow you to charge a more premium rate too.  (Depending on where you're from your accent could probably raise or lower your rates too)

I love living in what some consider a socialist country. Any employer try to get away from giving me sick pay and I'd have the union on him so fast it'd make his head spin.

@Hizang: Yeah, read the article. Once you earn over £102 a week and you've been ill for 4 days you can be paid sick leave. At £6.70 an hour you'd need to work less than 16 hours, which is less than two of your work days.

And if you're only having a single day off due to an illness, you're not really ill.

Regardless, I say do something you enjoy, not something that earns you money. Or at least, enjoyment should be your main priority.

If you are interested in a job that is exciting for an hour, then watch TV for three hours, and want to get some ulcers, and maybe have a hard time finding someone who will pay you to do it, I recommend the EMS field.

When I get sick all I get is several days of no pay and a doctor bill if I bother to go to the doctor and a boss whining at me he's gonna fire me if I don't get well faster or go to the doctor I cant afford to go to because I'm sick and not working so not getting paid.

Yeah, well I've been working at Walmart for the past three weeks now. I work about 39 hours a week and get no time to come home and do anything. And the funny part is, since they pay you every two weeks, I've got a shit paycheck coming tomorrow and the damn-good paycheck coming in another two weeks.

And I push carts all goddamn day. Seriously people. PUT THEM THE FUCK BACK. IT ISN'T THAT HARD. YOU make MY LIFE a LIVING HELL.

How about being cornered by a manager. Yes CORNERED as in a corner. And yelled at for not bringing a certain box (That does not even effect her) To your department

If you have a hobby work on that in your spare time and try to grow it in to a career. I've been working as a freelance graphic designer for the past couple of months and only get £8 per hour before tax but in the future that could be a hell of a lot more.

My advice to anyone can often be abridged to "come to Canada." I live in the prairies, and I don't know anyone with an education who makes less than $14 CAD an hour, plus we have EI (employment insurance) for things like sick leave and a single-payer healthcare system.

I can't speak much for the UK, but my favorite job in the states was a baker. Working in the middle of the night to prepare and then proof bread/pastries/muffins/etc. was fun as hell. It got lonely, sure, but working for salary was awesome until my local bakery shut down. Man. Making bread from (almost) scratch was awesome.

based on some quick searching, you'd be earning at least $17 bucks an hour minimum at a fulltime wage, with paid sick leave and paid annual leave as well.

@N7: I fucking know right? Well, ok, if people just put them back then I would have spent a year without a job...but why don't people put the different types of carts together in the corrals? I've seen disorganization in there that looked like it took an engineer some time to develop.

i know that feeling. i have a crappy job part time. i guess it's time to look for a new job somewhere. maybe you can find a different child care place. some places are different than others.

@AlisterCat: That is good advice, but my hobbies don't lead in to jobs. I mean I really like writing, but there are enough writers out that that compered to others I am not good enough.

Another angle to look at what you want to do is to look over what you have learned over the years you study and work on the childcare industry and see what skill sets you have developed that are transferable to other profession. Off the top of my head childcare -> caring for children -> caring -> service industry -> hospital -> nurse. You can try to study to be a nurse. Or childcare -> caring for children -> caring -> service industry -> hotel -> hospitality services. (I have no idea why they all star with h)
